A study on systematic review of unplugged activity (언플러그드 활동의 체계적 문헌고찰에 관한 연구)

  • In order to examine the educational effects and future directions of unplugged activities, we conducted a systematic review of Korean journals and theses from 2007 to 2016. Three kinds of database were used for systematic review: RISS, KISS, and E-article, and were performed searches using options such as 'unplugged' and 'play-centered'. Based on the protocol selected in the framework of the systematic review, 37 articles were selected analyzed in terms of research status, research subjects, research methods, research hubs, study mechanisms, educational methods, and research effects. Unplugged activities were the most popular among elementary school students. Educational effects were found to have significant effects on academic achievement, problem solving ability, and logical thinking ability. In the affirmative domain, there was a significant effect on interest, curiosity, and motivation. Based on the results of the analysis, the characteristics and implications of Unplugged activities and present the direction of future education were discussed.

A case study of understanding the embodied metaphors for AI education (인공지능 교육을 위한 체화된 메타포 이해 : 언플러그드 활동을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the educational context including the actual learning process and learner perception using the embodied metaphor in AI education. To this end, a class was designed to utilize the embodied metaphor-based unplugged activity through a qualitative approach. Matrix analysis technique was used to analyze the data collected throughout the course of the class to analyze the experiences and perceptions according to the characteristics of the learner, and the learning context. The results of the study were: First, there was a difference according to the learner's prior experience in the effect on the representative knowledge and the subsequent practice process. Next, the embodied metaphor-based unplugged activity showed soft landing effects on practice and text coding. Finally, the organic integration of unplugged and plugged-in classes helped learners understand the potential of computational thinking.

An Unplugged Activity to Understand the PageRank Algorithm (PageRank 알고리즘을 이해하기 위한 언플러그드 활동)

  • There are unplugged computer science activities for elementary school students to learn the concept of the Internet. However, these activities are not enough to teach the concept of the Web because they focus on teaching how the Internet works. Since the Web is the core technology of the Third Industrial Revolution, it needs to be understood as a basic common sense. In this paper, we developed an unplugged activity to understand the PageRank algorithm which is closely related to the web. The experimental results show that our unplugged activities behave similarly to the PageRank algorithm.

Computer Science Unplugged Activities of Graph Theory for Primary School Students (초등학생을 위한 그래프 학습 언플러그드활동 개발)

  • Computer Science Unplugged is a collection of free learning activities that teach Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, string, crayons and lots of running around. In spite of the success of unplugged activities, the unplugged resources for experiencing the concepts of data structures is lacked. In this study, we design, implement and survey the 3 hour lessons of the core concepts of graph theory and the shortest path algorithm for the primary students using computer science unplugged activities. Our survey results showed that our lesson plan is adequate for primary school students and will have a positive effects for primary school students.

  • Through the fourth industrial revolution and coronavirus pandemic situation, the necessity and importance of SW education are being emphasized more. However, it is difficult to achieve the effect of improving students' computational thinking skills by just 17th hour, which is organized in the 2015 revised curriculum. Moreover, due to the coronavirus pandemic situation that has continued since last year, there are environmental restrictions on the equal SW education for students at the educational site. In this study, the unplugged class using a completion robot was designed to reflect the current situation at the educational site and experience of SW education was provided to the 6th graders of J elementary school. Through the application of a class, we checked whether the unplugged class using robots affect students' perception of SW education and the use of computational thinking skills. As a result, the unplugged class using a completion robot showed that students used computational thinking to solve given problems and had a positive impact on changes in perception of SW education.

  • In the existing curriculum of the Elementary computer Education emphasizes students' problem-solving ability and knowledge of informatics. However, current computer education focus on using application program. In order to raise students' problem-solving ability and logical thinking ability, it is necessary to learning about computer science education. Thereupon, this study applied unplugged learning method to the elementary student. To apply the play-based unplugged learning method to the area of information representation. As a result, unplugged learning method produced higher academic achievement than the lecture model. Also it was more positive in the affective area than the lecture model.

  • With the introduction of the 2015 revised curriculum, software education became mandatory in elementary school. The practical subject in the content for the software education consists of information ethics, algorithms, programming, and computer science. Especially, elementary school encourages the unplugged activities. Unplugged activities are preferred among the teachers in the education field as a teaching-learning method. However, those teachers pointed out that the lack of suitable unplugged activity materials was the biggest challenge. In addition, it was pointed out that the existing materials were not suitable for achievement standards, and there are many simple playing-oriented educations that are not linked to computing activities. In this study, we developed an unplugged activity-oriented robot that can be used for the elementary students to learn the basic control structure suggested in the achievement criteria SW education and to develop creative problem solving ability through various activities using sensors. The effectiveness was verified through the software class using the developed robot in this study.

The Effect of Education Data Visualization using Unplugged Program on the Computational Thinking of Third Grade Students (언플러그드 방식을 활용한 데이터 시각화 교육이 초등학교 3학년 학생의 컴퓨팅 사고력에 미치는 효과)

  • In this study, an unplugged education method which focuses on the data visualization training was applied to third grade students of an elementary school and analyzed its impact on enhancing their computational thinking. The analysis was conducted on 60 elementary school teachers and 124 third grade students and the unplugged education program based on the data visualization procedure was developed. The education program developed was carried out with 24 third grade students for 36 hours over six days. The effect of the program applied was analyzed through the pre-to-post comparison performed with perceptive strength test and creativity test in order to examine the enhancement in computational thinking. According to the analysis result, the unplugged education method which focuses on the data visualization training has significant effect on the 'computational perception' and 'creativity' of third grade students.

  • 컴퓨터 교육은 실습 위주로, 컴퓨터를 도구적으로 활용하는 소프트웨어 활용 수업이 대부분을 차지하고 있으며, 단순한 컴퓨터 활용의 실습 수업은 학습자로 하여금 흥미를 잃게 하고 문제해결력과 창의성 개발을 저하 시킨다는 문제점들이 제기되어 왔다. 이에 개정된 7차 교육과정은 이러한 소프트웨어 활용 위주 교육의 문제점을 인식하고 컴퓨터 과학, 원리 위주의 교육으로 변화 하였다. 본 연구는 개정된 제7차 교육 과정이 컴퓨터 과학 교육으로 변화됨에 따라 컴퓨터 과학의 내용을 보다 흥미롭고 쉽게 이해시키기 위하여 언플러그드 학습 시스템을 개발 하였다. 컴퓨터 과학의 추상적이고 개념적인 내용은 중등학교의 교육과정으로는 다소 쉽지 않은 내용이며, 이론 위주의 교육과정은 학생들에게 흥미 없는 교과로 비추어 질 수 있지만, 정보 교과를 위한 언플러그드 학습 시스템을 통해 흥미 있는 교과로 인식이 변화될 것으로 기대된다.

Application of Unplugged Learning Method for Intellectual Disability Students' Informatics Education (지적장애학생의 정보교육을 위한 언플러그드 학습 방법의 적용)

  • The purpose of this research is to compare the effect of unplugged learning method with traditional lecture method on intellectual disability students' informatics education achievement. For this goal, we developed a new unplugged learning method and new appropriate teach-learning materials that can improve the intellectual disability students' informatics education achievement. We randomly divided special school specialized course freshman into the experimental group and the control group. We applied unplugged learning method to the experimental group and lecture teaching method to the control group. According to these results, Intellectual disability students participated in task interestingly and spontaneously. It has been proved that the teaching-learning materials applied unplugged learning method were helpful for intellectual disability students' informatics education achievement.
