This study was carried out in order to identify the error types of statistical graphs for statistical literacy education. We analyze the meaning of using graphs in statistical problem solving, and identify categories, frequencies, and contexts as the components of statistical graphs. Error types of representing categories and frequencies make statistics consumers see incorrect distributions of data by subjective point of view of statistics producers and visual illusion. Error types of providing contexts hinder the interpretation of statistical information by concealing or twisting the contexts of data. Moreover, the findings show that tasks provide standardized frame already for drawing graphs in order to avoid errors and pay attention to the process of drawing the graph rather than statistical literacy for analyzing data. We suggest some implications about statistical literacy education, ethical problems, and knowledge for teaching to be considered when teaching the statistical graph in elementary mathematics classes.

This study aims to find methods to improve the scientific literacy of the youth, which comprise the group who will lead the upcoming era of knowledge and science. To do this, the study focuses on improving the youth's understanding of science and their ability to utilize it. It is widely recognized that scientific literacy Is highly essential in this era of scientific revolution and innovations. Accordingly, various kinds of programs are being developed in Korea and other countries. In particular, 'Project 2061' is designed to enable a permanent learning system by improving problem-solving ability through the scientific process. This system plays an Important role In supporting the Americans' Pursuit of Increased literacy in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. To improve the scientific literacy of young people, content development in relation with school courses as well as information services that arouse Interest and curiosity In the field of science is very important. In addition, It is necessary to develop a problem-solving program by stages. Further studies focusing on methods of improving scientific literacy of the youth are recommended.
Mental arithmetic has recently gained a higher profile in primary school mathematics. The study aims to reflect didactical background of mental arithmetic in number and operations curriculum for primary school mathematics. In order to attain these purposes, the present paper describes the meaning of mathematical literacy and didactical background of mental arithmetic on which have been laid emphasis in relation to mathematical literacy in many countries. Also it shows current suggestions for mental arithmetic instruction in Everyday Mathematics Project in USA, Numeracy Number Project in Great Britain, TAL project based on Realistic Mathematics Education in the Netherlands, and mathe 2000 project in German in order to gain practical ideas for teaching mental arithmetic. Furthermore, it discusses mental strategies of students and didactical models for improving mental arithmetic instruction based on the results of many researches. Under these theoretical foundations, it is analyzed how mental arithmetic is developed in our number and operations curriculum, focused on mental strategies and didactical models. Finally, implications for improving our mental arithmetic instruction are discussed.

This study was carried out in order to draw some implications for teaching statistical graph in mathematics education with respect to practical statistics education for promoting students' statistical literacy. We analyze 133 graphs appearing in 99 elementary textbooks of other subjects (subjects except from mathematics) by subjects and types, and identify some cases of graphs addressed by other subjects. As a results, statistical graph was most addressed in social studies, and bar graphs, line graphs, tables, and circle graphs are most used in other subjects. Moreover, there are some issues related to contents-(1) the problem of curricular sequencing between mathematics and other subjects, (2) the level of addressing ratio graph, and (3) the use of wavy lines. In terms of forms, (1) the visual variation of graphical representations, (2) representation combining multiple graphs, and (2) graphs specialized for particular subjects are drawn as other issues. We suggest some implications to be considered when teaching the statistical graph in elementary mathematics classes.

The concepts of sample and sampling are central to the statistical thinking and foundations of the statistical literacy, so we need to be emphasized their importance in the statistics education. However, many researches which dealt with samples only analyze textbooks or students' responses. In this study, the concept of sample is addressed by a historical consideration which is one aspect of the didactical analysis. Moreover, developing concept of sample is analyzed from the preceding studies about the statistical literacy, considering the sample representativeness and the sampling variability. The results say that the historical process of developing the concept of sample can be divided into three step: understanding the sample representativeness; appearing the sample variance; recognizing the sampling variability. Above all, it is important to aware and control the sampling variability, but many related researches might not consider sample variability. Therefore, it implies that the awareness and control of sampling variability are needed to reflect to the teaching-learing of sample for developing the students' statistical literacy.
The purpose of this study is to develop a statistical program using data and artificial intelligence prediction models and apply it to one class in the sixth grade of elementary school to see if it is effective in improving students' statistical literacy. Based on the analysis of problems in today's elementary school statistical education, a total of 15 sessions of the program was developed to encourage elementary students to experience the entire process of statistical problem solving and to make correct predictions by incorporating data, the core in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution into AI education. The biggest features of this program are the recognition of the importance of data, which are the key elements of artificial intelligence education, and the collection and analysis activities that take into account context using real-life data provided by public data platforms. In addition, since it consists of activities to predict the future based on data by using engineering tools such as entry and easy statistics, and creating an artificial intelligence prediction model, it is composed of a program focused on the ability to develop communication skills, information processing capabilities, and critical thinking skills. As a result of applying this program, not only did the program positively affect the statistical literacy of elementary school students, but we also observed students' interest, critical inquiry, and mathematical communication in the entire process of statistical problem solving.
The rapidly changing world calls for reform in mathematics education from lifelong learning perspectives. This study examines adults' perception of mathematics by reflecting on their experiences of mathematics in and out of school in order to understand what the current needs of adults are. With the two questions: "what experiences do participants have during their learning of mathematics in schools?" and "how do they perceive mathematics in their current life?", we analyzed the semi-structured interviews with 10 adults who have different sociocultural backgrounds using narrative inquiry methodology. As a result, participants tended to accept school mathematics as simply a technique for solving computational problems, and when they had not known the usefulness of mathematical knowledge, they experienced frustration with mathematics in the process of learning mathematics. After formal education, participants recognized mathematics as the basic computation skill inherent in everyday life, the furniture of their mind, and the ability to efficiently express, think, and judge various situations and solve problems. Results show that adults internalized school education to clearly understand the role of mathematics in their lives, and they were using mathematics efficiently in their lives. Accordingly, there was a need to see school education and adult education on a continuum, and the need to conceptualize the mathematical abilities required for adults as mathematical literacy.
This study is proposing and investigating the possibility of mathematics learning using novels, "Alice in Wonderland" and "Flatland". The proposed learning model of this article is for 3 hours of mathematics class. The model has been reviewed and remedied by 7 professionals(mathematics teachers). General opinions of the reviewers are quite optimistic on possibility of implementation.

Taking samples of data and using samples to make inferences about unknown populations are at the core of statistical investigations. So, an understanding of the nature of sample as statistical thinking is involved in the area of statistical literacy, since the process of a statistical investigation can turn out to be totally useless if we don't appreciate the part sampling plays. However, the conception of sampling is a scheme of interrelated ideas entailing many statistical notions such as repeatability, representativeness, randomness, variability, and distribution. This complexity makes many people, teachers as well as students, reason about statistical inference relying on their incorrect intuitions without understanding sample comprehensively. Some research investigated how the concept of a sample is understood by not only students but also teachers or preservice teachers, but we want to identify preservice secondary mathematics teachers' understanding of sample as the statistical literacy by a qualitative analysis. We designed four items which asked preservice teachers to write their understanding for sampling tasks including representativeness and variability. Then, we categorized the similar responses and compared these categories with Watson's statistical literacy hierarchy. As a result, many preservice teachers turned out to be lie in the low level of statistical literacy as they ignore contexts and critical thinking, expecially about sampling variability rather than sample representativeness. Moreover, the experience of taking statistics courses in university did not seem to make a contribution to development of their statistical literacy. These findings should be considered when design preservice teacher education program to promote statistics education.
