  • The purpose of this study was to propose instructional methods using base-ten blocks in teaching the division of decimal for 5th grade students by analyzing the process of their conceptual comprehension. The students in this study were found to understand the two main meanings of the division of decimal, distribution and area, by modeling them with base-ten blocks. They were able to identify the algorithm through the use of base-ten blocks and to understand the principle of calculations by connecting the manipulative activities to each stage of algorithm. The students were also able to determine using base-ten blocks whether the results of division of decimal might be reasonable. This study suggests that the appropriate use of base-ten blocks promotes the conceptual understanding of the division of decimal.

  • Our study is composed of Arduino robot assembly, board connecting and collaborative programming learning, and it is to evaluate their effect on improving secondary mathematics-science gifted students' convergence capability. Research results show that interpersonal skills, information-scientific creativity and integrative thinking disposition are improved. Further, by analyzing the relationship between the sub-elements of each thinking element, persistence and imagination for solving problems, interest of scientific information, openness, sense of adventure, a logical attitude, communication, productive skepticism and so on are extracted as important factors in convergence learning. Thus, as the result of our study, we know that gifted students conducted various thinking activities in their learning process to solve the problem, and it can be seen that convergence competencies are also improved significantly.

  • G-learning, based on online game, virtual reality activities and communities, is considered as a fresh, differentiated idea at learning which drives learners' interest and attention. The paper is to analyzed effectiveness of G-learning at the mathematics classes in elementary school. Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students in Seoul are selected as an experimental groups and their achievement scores are measured. The difference between G learning group and textbook group was significant. This result shows that G-learning has a positive effect on learning.

  • The fraction concept consists of various meanings and is one of the more abstract and difficult in elementary school mathematics. This study intends to analyze the fraction concept from historical and psychological viewpoints, to examine the current elementary mathematics textbooks by these viewpoints and to seek the direction for improvement of it. Basic ideas about fraction are the partitioning - the dividing of a quantity into subparts of equal size - and about the part-whole relation. So these ideas are heavily emphasized in current textbooks. However, from the learner's point of view, situations related to different meanings of fraction concept draw qualitatively different response from students. So all the other meanings of fraction concept should be systematically represented in elementary mathematics textbooks. Especially based on historico-genetic principle, the current textbooks need the emphasis on the fraction as a measure and on constructing fraction concept by unit fraction as a unit.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the learning experience understanding degree and radian as the measurement of arc affects the conceptual understanding of radian and measuring angle. For this purpose, we investigated pre-service teachers' understanding about measurement of angle using a length of arc, and then conducted a teaching experiment with two middle school students. The results of analyzing pre-service teachers' and students' response are as follows. Students' experience interpreting the concept of degree into measurement of arc had a positive effect on understanding of radian and students' learning process in which they got measurement of angle as measurement of arc enabled conceptual understanding of 'linear measuring'. Also a circle context and a strategy dividing by arc operated as effective strategies for solving various problems about an angle. Finally, we confirmed that providing direct manipulative activities as a chance to explore relationships between an angle and arc measure can help students' conceptual understanding of measuring angle.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate high school students' learning characteristics which revealed in their learning process of limit using GeoGebra. And we are going to analyze effects of teaching of limit using GeoGebra to high school students' interesting and attitudes for mathematics learning. To do this, we selected three high school students as participants and ask them performing limit learning using GeoGebra. We recorded their problem solving process. Through analyzing their problem solving process relate to their solution, we found the followings: First, students did not logically approach based on mathematical properties or given materials, rather showing tendency decide with self-conscious and intuition. Second, it is possible that former reasoning strategies disturb following reasoning in the process of high school students' mathematics learning. Third, learning process of limit using GeoGebra help high school students to identify and correct their errors relate to limit learning. Forth, learning process of limit using GeoGebra positively effects to high school students' interesting and attitudes for mathematics learning.

  • This study reports pre-service teachers' problem solving process on the problem-based learning(PBL) employed in an elementary mathematics method course. The subjects were 6 pre-service teachers(students). The data were collected from classroom observation. The research results were described by problem solving stages. In understanding the problem stage, students identified what problem stand for and made a problem solving planned sheet. In curriculum investigation stage, students went through investigation and re-investigation process for solving the task. In problem solving stage, students selected the best strategy for solving the task and presented and shared about problem solving results.

  • In the field of arithmetic in mathematics education, there has been lack of fine-grained investigations addressing the relationship between students' construction of division knowledge with fractional quantities and their whole number division knowledge. This study, through the analysis of part of collected data from a year-long teaching experiment, presents a possible constructive itinerary as to how a student could modify her unit-segmenting scheme to deal with various fraction measurement division situations: 1) unit-segmenting scheme with a remainder, 2) fractional unit-segmenting scheme. Thus, this study provides a clue for curing a fragmentary approach to teaching whole number division and fraction division and preventing students' fragmentary understanding of the same arithmetical operation in different number systems.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide teachers with suggestions on how to teach the unit of finding the area of plane figure by analyzing students' different solution methods. The solution methods were analyzed according to how the original area of the given figure was kept: partition, transformation, and elimination. The partition method was most used. With regard to transformation, students seemed to find it easy to use the area of rectangle. With regard to elimination, students were successful using elimination to find the area of a given figure but had difficulty in producing a formula from the method. The teacher played a key role to encourage students to employ different solution methods, and gave them opportunities to compare and contrast various methods. A cautionary note is that, with too much emphasis on 'variety', the mathematical efficiency may be lost in the process. It suggests that a teacher should be careful to establish appropriate sociomathe- matical norms with students in order that they can make their own judgment on which solution method is mathematically worth and efficient.
