  • This study was related to the cases in which pre-service elementary teachers designed math lessons tailored to math underachievers with learning trajectories and universal design for learning. Learning trajectories can be a basis to identify students' current state of understanding and development, and make a lesson plan responsively tailored to underachievers' state. And universal design for learning is a framework that removes potential barriers that may exist in math lessons from the time the lessons are planned, and guides the rich learning environment accessible to all learners. In order to provide an experience of designing math lessons considering the characteristics of math underachievers, this study required pre-service elementary teachers to create learning trajectories and make lesson plans with the principles of universal design for learning. The characteristics of the learning trajectories shown in the lesson plans and the results of applying the principles of universal design for learning were analyzed. By discussing the results, implications were derived regarding the necessity of lesson planning for math underachievers and the development of lesson planning competency of pre-service elementary mathematics teachers in teacher education.

  • One of the issues with the textbooks pertinent to the current study is whether or not the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) factors have been dealt to satisfy students with different aptitudes in learning the core objectives of the lessons. This study develops a modified version of the UDL analysis criteria from the cross curricular criteria to language teaching and learning and uses it to analyze the sequence of digital English textbooks to investigate the descriptive statistics of the UDL factors in the new textbooks. The result shows that the textbook is designed most favorably to the students with the talent of linguistic aptitude and less favorably to the students with other types of aptitudes. The sequence analysis shows that sentence/word length and appearance of new words are incrementally sequenced as students advance upper grades. However, the syntactic complexity of middle school curves up steeply which is different from the elementary school textbooks. The UDL analysis will provide learning factors to consider when designing digital English textbooks to cover different aptitudinal groups.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and use the e-learning contents accessibility guidelines to improve contents accessibility for the non-technical developers and designers. The accessibility guidelines used for web or digital contents are usually technical, field dependent, or specific that are not friendly for many developers or designers. In this study, the e-Learning Contents Accessibility Guidelines was developed based on the principles of Universal Design for Learning. The guidelines could be used to map the necessary skills for the developers and the instructional designers. In this study, 5 users with different disabilities tested 6 e-learning contents, and surveyed e-learning experts to identify core elements for accessibility guidelines. Due to the limited accessibility of the contents, we need to offer manuals and training for developers and designers, need collaborative efforts between different stake holders, include accessibility in quality assurance guidelines, and further research to improve accessibility for many existing Flash contents.

  • This study examined the public interest in high school Korean language instruction and the universal design for learning (UDL) using the social big data analysis method. The observations from 10,339 search results led to the conclusion that public interest in UDL was significantly lower than that of high school Korean language instruction. The results of the Big Data Association analysis showed that 17.22% of the terms were found to be related to "curriculum." In addition, a survey was conducted on a total of 330 high school students to examine how their teachers apply UDL in the classroom. High school students perceived computers as the most frequently used technology tool in daily classes (38.79%). Teacher-led lectures (52.12%) were the most frequently observed method of instruction. Compared to the second-year and third-year students, the first-year students appreciated the usage of technology tools and various instruction mediums more frequently (ps<.05). Students were relatively more positive in their response to the query on the provision of multiple means of representation. Consequently, the lesson contents became easier to understand for students with the availability of various study methods and materials. The first-year students were generally more positive towards teachers' incorporation of UDL.
