Gentiana uchiyamana Nakai is a perennial herb in Gentianaceous plants. From the root of Gentiana uchiyamana Nakai, the bitter secoiridoid glucosides were isolated and identified as gentiopicroside and swertiamarin. A high-performance liquid chromatographic method for quantitative determination of bitter component, i.e. gentiopicroside in the roots of Gentiana scabra and G. uchiyamana Nakai was developed, using a ${\mu}$-Bondapak $C_{18}$ column and methanol-water mobile phases. The content of gentiopicroside was calculated from calibration curve previously prepared using the standard, 3.55% in the roots of Gentiana scabra and 1.58% in Gentiana uchiyamana Nakai.

From the leaves of Polygonum sachalinense Fr. Schm.(Polygonaceae) physcion(I) mp $205{\sim}6^{\circ}$, emodin(II) mp $248{\sim}50^{\circ}$, $physcion-8-0-{\beta}-glucoside(III)$ mp $245{\sim}6^{\circ}$, and $emodin-8-0-{\beta}-glucoside(IV)$ mp $186{\sim}8^{\circ}$ were isolated.

From the ethereal extract of the roots of Angelica koreana Max. (Umbelliferae) two furanocoumarins such as isooxypeucedanin and oxypeucedanin methanolate were newly isolated together with isoimperatorin, osthol, imperatorin, bergapten, oxypeucedanin and ${\beta}-sitosterol$.

Potential toxicity of 15 medicinal plants used for herbal drugs, which were also described as being tonic for hematopoietic system or being toxic for the system in a oriental book 'Dong Ee Bo Gam', were evaluated in mice. Six plants among 15 plants tested appeared to exhibit acute toxicity along with bone marrow depression or with abnormally enhancing the $^3H-thymidine$ incorporation into DNA biosynthesis in bone marrow cells. Six plants were Paeonia albiflora, Pharbitis nil, Cemphalia lapidescens, Scutellaria baicalensis, Akebia quinata and Glycyrriza uralensis.

In order to investigate the pharmacological action of combined preparation of crude drugs, 'Whangryonhaedok-Tang' were studied. Pharmacological studies of the water extract, methanol insoluble fraction and methanol soluble fraction obtained from 'Whangryonhaedok-Tang' were conducted. The results of this investigation were summarized as follows; Central convulsions induced by strychnine, picrotoxine and caffeine were depressed in mice. Analgesic effect was observed in mice and rats. Antipyretic effect was observed in rats and rabbits. Sedative effect was observed.

In order to investigate the effect of 'Whangryonhaedok-Tang' on the anti-inflammatory, ileum of mice, blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol and antibacterial activity, those pharmacological actions were conducted. The results of this studies were summarized as follows; Rat hind paw edema induced by acetic acid was inhibited. In mice, tone of intestinal smooth muscle was suppressed with the treatment of sample and intestinal contractions induced by $BaCl_2$ was inhibited. Hypertensive effect was not observed in rabbits but was observed by the water extract of 'Whangryonhaedok-Tang' excluded Phellodendri Cortex in rabbits. The increased blood glucose levels in alloxandiabetic rabbits were significantly decreased by the oral administration of the sample I after 6 days. The total cholesterol levels in alloxan-induced rabbits were significantly decreased by the oral administration of the sample I after 9 days. Antibacterial activity was observed. In addition, we thought the pharmacological actions were significantly noted by the sample III (Methanol soluble fraction) because of the purification of effective components.

In order to investigate the pharmacological action of the combined preparation of crude drugs, 'Saengkankunbi-Tang' were studied. These studies were conducted in an attempt to investigate the effect of 'Saengkankunbi-Tang' on activities of the liver enzyme, protein contents and the excretory action of bile juice in the serum of $CCl_4-intoxicated$ rabbits. The results of this investigate were summarized as follows; GOT, GPT activities and total cholesterol contents in the serum of rabbits induced by $CCl_4$ were shown to the remarkable decrease with the passage of the time in the oral administration of the sample. Albumin contents in the serum of rabbits induce by $CCl_4$ were noted to the significant increase with the passage of the time. Serum total protein contents were noted to the significant increase only the 4th and 6th day. BSP accumulation contents in the serum of rabbits induced by $CCl_4$ showed the remarkable decrease with the passage of the time.

Spiraea prunifolia Sieb. et. Zucc. var. simpliciflora Nakai (Rosaceae) is distributed in Korea, and used as a folk medicine for antipyretic, antimalarial and emetic. Sterols were obtained from the methanolic extract of the root of above plant. The composition of sterols are campesterol and ${\beta}-sitosterol$ which has been determined by gaschromatographic analysis.

Free amino acids and total amino acids were detected by two dimensional TLC method in some edible mushrooms in Korea. The result is presented in the Table I and the chromatograms are shown in the Fig. 1 to 6.
