The strong ground motion data recorded in the Sino-Korea Craton are analysed toobtain attenuation relations valid for 5 < M < 8, r < 400 km applicable to the Korean Peninsula. The result is logA : -1.83+0.386M- log
${\gamma}$ -0.0015${\gamma}$ where A is peak horizontal acceleration in g, M is surface-wave magnitude, and r is hypocentral distance in km. Our result is compared with the existing attenuation relations of Western North America and Eastern North America and the prior predictive equations for the Southern part of Korean Peninsula. Our result compares better with those of North America than those of the Southern part of the Korean Peninsula. More theoretical and empirical studies are required for better attenuation relations appropriate for the Korean Peninsula. -
The Ulsan fault with NNW-SSE strike is a very wide and long lineament about 50km along Gyeungju-Ulsan line in the southeastern part of Korea. According to previous studies the Ulsan fault was not considered as a fault but only long lineament since no displacement was found along the lineament. Recently several Quaternary faults were reported in the northeastern part of lineament, which implies the neotectonic movement in this area. We analysed drainage pattern and stream gradient using the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data for both side of Ulsan fault line to check the recent topographic changes which indicate neotectonic movement. The result shows that stream index in the eastern part of Ulsan fault is higher than the one in the western part. This means that recent tectonic movement is more active in the eastern part of Ulsan fault.

The four agencies in Korea - KMA, KIGAM, KEPRI, and KINS - have been operating their own seismic network for many years. In this study we have developed an integrated seismic system named KISS (Korea Integrated Seismic System), which is very similar to LISS (Live Internet Seismic Server) of Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory. Through KISS we could share all the earthquake data observed by those organizations in near real time. This research result will lead to provide the opportunity to use all seismic information of the earthquakes around Korean peninsula. And KISS will make us enable to do systematic researches, such as study on focal mechanisms of earthquakes around Korean peninsula, seismic design, earthquake prediction, etc. KISS will be used in developing an Early Earthquake Warning System like TriNet in Southern California, USA so as to minimize seismic hazard.

The b-value in the magnitude-frequency relationship logN(m) =
$\alpha$ - bmwhere N(m) is the number of earthquakes exceeding magnitude m, is important seismicity parameter In hazard analysis. Estimation of the b-value for earthquake data observed on KSRS array network is done employing the maximum likelihood technique. Assuming the whole Korea Peninsula as a single seismic source area, the b-value is computed at 0.9. The estimation for KMA earthquake data is also similar to that. Since estimate is a function of minimum magnitude, we can inspect the completeness of earthquake catalog in the fitting process of b-value. KSRS and KMA data lists are probably incomplete for magnitudes less than 2.0 and 3.0, respectively. Examples from probabilistic seismic hazard assessment calculated for a range of b-value show that the small change of b-value has seriously effect on the prediction of ground motion. -
Frequency responses for most of the local seismic sensors in Korea have been roughly checked by mutual comparison of Fourier spectra of seismic records from accelerometer and seismometer, both of which are installed at the same location. Especially, because the frequency content of the seismic energy is usually above 1 Hz for local earthquakes, the reliability of low frequency response could have not been evaluated. Fortunately a recent large earthquake, Ms=7.2 on 02/06/29 containing dominant low frequency energy makes it possible to check the low frequency response of the seismic sensors, especially EpiSensor and JC-V100. Considering two types of sensor pairs, (STS-2 and EpiSensor, JC-V100 and EpiSensor), the low frequency response of EpiSensor is confirmed first by comparison with STS-2 which has proved low frequency response. Second, reliable low frequency limit of instrumentally corrected seismic data from JC-V100 data is estimated to be about 0.03 Hz by comparison with EpiSensor data.

In this study we developed the visualization scheme of spatial ground-motion measurements in real time by using DSS data. Even though this scheme itself is useful for national earthquake mitigation plans, this scheme could be served as the crucial core for constructing rapid earthquake damage evaluation system. DSS is the abbreviation of Data Subscription Service and this is the pre-assigned request for the seismic stations to send very limited brief data with high priority and negligible transmission load. In addition to visualize the damage area with intensity, the corresponding epicenter can be estimated roughly for quick event alarm. For the interpolation of spatially irregular PGA data, the program, named as surface. of GMT was used with NetCDF grid file format. Since the grid file is similar to a postscript file, the program, called as shading, was coded with C language by using Matpak library in order to convert grid files into image files.

Color-code imaging should be one of the best display tools for the quick perception of both damage area and its intensity, In this study we proposed the standard color code corresponding to maximum observed acceleration value. Since the acceleration value changes with frequency contents, we suggested to limit the frequency band less than 10Hz. The background considerations of this limitation, magnitude vs. dominant frequency, natural characteristics of artificial noises and the relationship between velocity and acceleration, were reviewed in detail. The standard of color code was assigned from 0.001%g to 20%g based on the possible earthquakes at Korean peninsula and the color imaging given by RGB value was shown to be very consistent, irrespective of hardware configuration.

The Mononobe-Okabe method is generally used to evaluate the dynamic earth force for the seismic design of retaining walls. However, the Mononobe-Okabe method does not consider the effects of the dynamic interactions between the backfill soil and the wall. In fact, a phase difference exists between the inertia force and the seismic earth pressure. In this study, shaking table tests were peformed on gravity walls retaining dry backfill sand to analyze the influence of several parameters (the unit weight of the wall, the input acceleration and base friction) on the development of the seismic earth pressure. The experiments revealed that the magnitude of the inertia force mobilized during seismic loading affected the seismic earth pressure. The difference in the phase angles between the inertia force and the seismic earth pressure was retained at 180 degrees before the wall failed but its magnitude changed significantly as the wall began to fail.

There are few earthquake records in Korea and the Japanese or American representative earthquake records have been generally used in the seismic design. In this study, some earthquake records which the range of earthquake magnitudes varies from 5.3 to 7.9 were collected and analyzed to assess which record can rationally reflect Korean seismic characteristics. In this assessment, each seismic energy and acceleration spectrum were analyzed with the unified maximum ground acceleration. Several numerical analyses on Korean representative caisson structures were also carried out to compare each dynamic displacement. In these numerical analyses, soil conditions and the dimension of structure such as height and width were changed. Through this assessment, it is found that the compatible earthquake magnitude in Korea is lower than 7. From the result of numerical analyses, it is shown that horizontal dynamic displacements corresponding to earthquake magnitudes over than 7 are quite larger than those below earthquake magnitude 7. Based on this study, it is necessary that Korean seismic design guideline will refer earthquake magnitude criteria for the construction of the economical aseismic structure.

Total stress analysis method and nonlinear constitutive models have been used to analyze a dynamic performance of Dams but, there is some limitation in analysis, for example, effects of build up of pore pressure and generations of permanent deformations. Therefore considering these limitations, which is mentioned before, dynamic behavior characteristics of dams and response acceleration characteristics was analyzed in time domain, applying an elasto-plastic constitutive model and effective analysis method.

Seismic Response of Base-Isolated Liquid Storage Tanks Considering Liquid-Structure-Soil InteractionThe effects of the base-isolation system and elastic soil foundation on the behavior of a liquid storage tank are studied. To evaluate the seismic response of liquid storage tank accurately, the coupled dynamic system considering base isolation and soil interaction problem is formulated in time domain. Results show that the base isolation system reduces effectively the radial displacements, base shears, overturning moments, axial resultant stresses and the hydrodynamic pressure by providing flexibility and energy dissipation capability. Base Isolation may, however, increase the relative liquid sloshing amplitude due to the effect of liquid-structure interaction and cause excessive large relative displacements between structure and foundation. In addition to base-isolator, the dynamic behavior of liquid storage tank is related to the flexibility of base foundation, so the analysis of soil-structure interaction s achieved.

In this study, a numerical analysis method for soil-pile interaction in frequency domain problem is presented. The total soil-pile interaction system is divided into two parts so called near field and far field. In the near field, beam elements are used for a pile and plain strain finite elements for soil. In the far field, dynamic fundamental solution for multi-layered half planes based on boundary element formulation is adopted for soil. These two fields are coupled using FE-BE coupling technique In order to verify the proposed soil-pile interaction analysis, the dynamic responses of pile on multi-layered half planes are simulated and the results are compared with the experimental results. Also, the dynamic response analyses of interface spring elements are performed. As a result, less spring stiffness makes the natural frequency decrease and the resonant amplitude increase.

The ASCE formula of lifeline.soil interaction force is the basis of semi-analytical relationship for buried pipelines subjected to longitudinal permanent ground deformation due to seismic induced liquefaction. However, since the ASCE formula has been developed based on the stiffness of non-liquefied region, it is needed to modify for the varied stiffness of liquefied region. With this object, the consideration of decreasing effect of soil stiffness in liquefied region is made: i.e. the spatial distributions of pipeline-soil interaction force in liquefied region. It means that the improved formula can reflect various patterns of permanent ground deformation more realistically. Through the comparative analyses using both the improved and ASCE formula, the applicability of the improved and the limitation of the ASCE formula and semi-analytical relationship are discussed. Also, relative influences of various parameters are evaluated for the clarification of behavior of pipeline subjected to longitudinal permanent ground deformation due to liquefaction.

The ground-borne vibration from pile driving is causing many public discontents. However, because of the fact that the characteristics of wave propagation and attenuation are not well understood, systematic and effective vibration reduction measures can not be taken. This paper attempts to study the propagation of stress waves induced by the pile driving. To simulate the wave propagation in a semi-infinite domain, the so-called absorbing boundaries are incorporated in the finite element method and a series of numerical simulations is performed. Numerical results show that the surface displacement and velocity increase first and then decrease as the pile penetration depth becomes larges.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected. local discontinuity in deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. The proposed numerical method for the prediction of seismic behavior for reinforced concrete bridge piers is veri fief by comparison with the reliable experimental results.

In the present design concept, the nonlinear behavior of bridges is allowed under large earthquake. Therefore, demands for nonlinear analyses of bridges are increased more and more especially in the area of seismic assessment. It is, however, difficult to solve the problem how the nonlinearity of columns should be modelled. In this study, the fiber element Is adopted for model ins pier column. The element is a kind of structural elements like frame element, and it can model the distributed plasticity of plastic hinge. A 3 span continuos bridge is taken for seismic analysis. First, the nonlinear static analysis the column at fixed support are performed so that the characteristics of column is investigated. Second, the nonlinear dynamic analyses of the full bridge model is performed, considering 3 directional earthquake excitations.

Dynamic response analysis are conducted for a floating bridge subjected to multiple support earthquake excitation. The floating bridge used in this study is supported by discrete floating pontoons and horizontal pretension cables supported at both ends of the bridge. The bridge is modeled with finite elements and the hydrodynamic added mass and added damping due to the surrounding fluid around pontoons are obtained using boundary elements. Multiple support excitation is introduced at both ends of the bridge and the time history response is compared to that of a simultaneous excitation. The results shows that the differences between two results are not so large except for cable tension for which the multiple support excitation yields larger values. During the analysis the concept of retardation function is utilized to consider the frequency dependency of the hydrodynamic coefficients.

A technique for the seismic reliability evaluation of electric power transmission systems(EPTS) adapted to ground motion characteristics of Korea has been developed to evaluate reliability indices corresponding to the whole system and to each node within. A network model with nodes and links for EPTS has been established, and a seismic substation-fragility curve obtained from seismic fragilities of power system facilities has been derived. A point source model, the doubly truncated Gutenberg-Richter relationship, and earthquake intensity attenuation formula have been applied to simulate seismic events. Using Monte-Carlo simulation method, the seismic reliability of EPTS is evaluated and, it appeared that seismic effect on EPTS in low and moderate seismicity regions has to be considered.

A new seismic design criteria of electric transmission and substation facilities has been proposed. For this propose, the historic data of the earthquake damage and the state-of-the-art of the facilities were carefully reviewed and evaluated. Based on the results, a most reasonable and efficient design criteria has been extracted and proposed for the practical design of the facilities. The criteria is expected to be effectively used for obtaining the seismic safety of newly constructed or extensioning facilities. However, an independent criteria is required to evaluate and improve the seismic capacity of existing facilities

This paper presents a signal processing procedure to detect damage locations of frame structures by using continuous wavelet transform. Morlet wavelet is used as a mother wavelet in wavelet transform. Wavelet transform has the characteristics that allows the use of long time intervals at more precise low-frequency information, and shorter regions at high-frequency information. By this wavelet transform characteristics, Morlet wavelet may be used to identify the locations of damages in the structures. The numerical case studies show that this method can be applied to detect the damage location under a controlled sweeping load.

It is well known that double integration of measured acceleration records are very difficult, particularly in the case of measurements on civil engineering structures. The measured accelerations on civil structures usually contain non-gaussian and low-frequency noises as well as acceleration records are non-stationary. For this type of signals, wavelet transform can be useful because of its inherent processing abilities for non-stationary signals. In this paper, the do-noising algorithm using the wavelet transform are slightly extended to process non-gaussian and low frequency noises, using median filter concepts. The example studies show that the integration can be improved using proposed method.

The capacity of CFS piers has not been used to a practical design, because there is no guide of a seismic design for CFS piers. Therefore, the guide of a seismic design value is derived from tests of CFS piers in order to apply it to a practical seismic design. Steel piers and concrete-filled steel piers are tested with constant axial load using quasi-static cyclic lateral load to check ductile capacity and using the real Kobe ground motion of pseudo-dynamic test to verify seismic performance. The results prove that CFS piers have more satisfactory ductility and strength than steel piers and relatively large hysteretic damping in dynamic behaviors. The seismic performance of steel and CFS piers is quantified on the basis of the test results. These results are evaluated through comparison of both the response modification factor method by elastic response spectrum and the performance-based design method by capacity spectrum and demand spectrum using effective viscous damping. The response modification factor of CFS piers is presented to apply in seismic design on a basis of this evaluation for a seismic performance.

The resent earthquakes in worldwide have caused extensive damage to highway reinforced concrete bridge piers. It has been observed in the Korean Peninsula that the number of minor or low earthquake motions have increased year by year. Since the concern about the earthquake hazards is increased, the objective of this research is to evaluate the damage of reinforced concrete bridge piers subjected to probable earthquake motions. Experimental investigation was conducted to study the seismic performance of the full-scale specimens in size D=1.2m H=4.8m, which were constructed with different longitudinal lap splice and loading pattern, through the quasi-static test and the pseudo-dynamic test. It is thought that this result could contribute to establish the retrofit decision-making and disaster planning of reinforced concrete bridge piers in earthquake regions. And it could be also possible to quantify the damage of reinforced concrete bridge piers under cyclic loading

It was performed that the stability evaluation using pseudo-static method and modified pseudo-static method for rockfill and rockfill-concrete section of composite dam. As a results of pseudo-static and modified pseudo-static analysis using seismic coefficient 0.154g, the maximum displacement at dam crest was occurred about 14~18cm on rockfill section and about 5~9cm on rockfill-concrete section, respectively. Also, that the factor of safety of down slope was more than 1.0~1.5. the rockfill and rockfill-concrete section of composite dam did not show any stability problems for 0.154g. Further research is still necessary in seismic safety of composite dam.

Earthquake resistance design has been developed many countries like Japan, USA, Mexico, New Zealand etc., which countries have experienced many earthquakes. Nowadays, earthquake resistance design has come into worldwide use. In Korea, the seismic design regulations have been established since 1988 in order to minimize the economic losses. Recently performance based design method has been adopted as a new Earthquake resistance design method. These regulations, however, are targeted for newly constructed buildings, In Korea, there are no regulations for existing buildings that built before 1988. On the other hand, in Japan and USA, the seismic performance evaluation is coded. In Japan, the evaluation index which can measure seismic performance has been made. So, we need to prepare the regulations that evaluate the seismic performance, furthermore proper retrofitting design guideline needs to be proposed when remodeling old buildings. In this research, various seismic performance evaluation methods which are being used in Japan and USA are reviewed in order to establish seismic performance evaluation index for those existing old structures in Korea.

The AASHTO seismic base isolation design approach has been reviewed and modified to fit the nonlinear static analysis procedure for reinforced concrete structures in a simpler way. Such an adaptation may be possible for the fact that the reinforced concrete under development of damage due to earthquake loading keeps softening to result in period shifting toward longer side. The validity of the proposed approach was verified by applying it to the examples presented in the current state-of-the-practice approach.

Viscoelastic dampers are known effective devices for response reduction under earthquakes and winds. This study addresses how to design the optimum viscoelastic dampers installed at the full scale five-story steel building and novel approach to carry out the experimental work to verify the damper performance. First, an exciter of hybrid mass-type actuator is designed, which can move the building and its mathematical model is derived. The integrated system of building-actuator is experimentally analyzed for mathematical model. Second, convex model is applied for the prediction of required additional damping ratios to reduce responses below a specified target level. Chevron-type viscoelastic dampers are manufactured and installed at the first and second inter-stories, which are optimum places for response reduction. Sine-sweep and white noise excitations, which are generated by the hybrid mass-type actuator, are applied to the full scale building without and with dampers for performance verification. The transfer function of the building with four dampers, two of them installed at each first and second inter-story, are found to be lower than that of the building with two dampers installed at the first inter-story

Recently, performance-based analysis/design methods such as the capacity spectrum method and the direct displacement-based design method were developed. In these methods, the estimation of energy dissipation capacity due to inelastic behavior of RC structures depends on empirical equations which are not sufficiently accurate. On the other hand, in a recent study, a simplified method for evaluating energy dissipation capacity was developed. In the present study, based on the evaluation method, a new seismic design method for flexure-dominated RC walls is developed. In determination of seismic earthquake load, the proposed design method can address variation of the energy dissipation capacity with design parameters such as dimensions and shapes of cross-sections, axial force, and reinforcement ratio and arrangement. The proposed design method is compared with the current performance-based design methods and the applicability of the proposed method is disscussed.

Most structures are expected deform nonlinear and inelastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. Nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) is the most rigorous procedure to compute seismic performance in the various inelastic analysis methods. But nonlinear analysis procedures necessitate more reliable and practical tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method. This method is the concept of an equivalent linear system, wherein a linear system having reduced stiffness and increased damping is used to estimate the response of the nonlinear system. This procedure are conceptually simple, but the iterative procedure is time-consuming and may sometimes lead to no solution or multiple solutions. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for mixed building structure.
-
Pushover analysis is frequently used for evaluation of seismic performance and determination of seismic demand of a building structure in the current structural engineering practice field. However, pushover analysis has a advantage for estimation of seismic demands, which cannot account for the contributions of higher modes to response or for a redistribution of inertia forces because of structural yielding and the associated changes in the vibration properties of the structures. Recently, Chopra and Coel(2001) derived uncoupled inelastic dynamic equation of motion with several assumptions in the pushover analysis. By using this approach, pushover analysis for each mode is carried out and modal pushover analysis method, which can consider higher mode effects of the building, was suggested. The principle objective of this study is to introduced the modal pushover analysis by Chopra et al.(2001) and investigated the applicability and validity of this method for the steel moment frames subjected to various earthquake ground motions.

In this study a analytical model for a structure with buckling-restrained unbonded knee-braces is proposed, and a performance-based seismic design procedure for such a system Is provided. The proposed structure system has advantage of simplifying the structural design procedure in that the hinge-connected main structural members, such as beams and columns, are designed only for gravity loads, and all the lateral seismic load is resisted by the braces. The design procedure is based on the concept of equivalent damping, and is implemented to the capacity spectrum method. Parametric study is performed with design variables such as yield stress and cross-sectional area of knee-braces to find out proper slope of the braces.

This paper proposes the concept and the general framework of the risk-based seismic design. Because earthquakes and the behaviors of structures are very unpredictable, probabilistic seismic design methods have been proposed after deterministic design methods. Considering these changes, we can find that the important point of seismic design is not the structural behavior itself, but the consequence of structural behavior under possible earthquakes. Risk-based seismic design can tell these consequences under any earthquakes. In this paper, structural confidences are considered by using fragility curve, and risk is modeled by failure probability and consequence-property damage cost, casualty cost.

It has been realized that the design codes and underlying design concept of high seismicity region may not be appropriate to low and moderate seismicity regions. The aim of this paper is to search seismic design strategies that are appropriate to moderate seismicity regions. The characteristics of seismic hazard in moderate seismicity regions are reviewed. The seismic responses of multi-span continuous bridges subjected to the ground shaking of moderate intensity are examined. The present code on seismic design of bridges is briefly reviewed. Based on these observations, design principles and strategies appropriate to the moderate seismicity regions are proposed for the multi-span continuous bridge

Bridge foundation failure considering the effect of local scour around pier foundations under hi-directional seismic excitations is examined in probabilistic perspectives. The seismic responses of bridges with deep foundations are evaluated with a simplified mechanical model, which can consider the local scour effect around the deep foundation in addition to many other components. The probabilistic characteristics of local scour depths are estimated by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The probabilistic characteristics of basic random variables used in the Monte Carlo simulation are determined from the actual hydraulic data collected in middle size streams in Korea. The failure condition of deep foundation is assumed as bearing capacity failure of the ground below the foundation base. The probability of foundation failure of a simply supported bridge with various scour conditions and hi-directional seismic excitations are examined. It is found that the local scour and the recovery duration are critical factors in evaluating the probability of foundation failure. Moreover, the probability of foundation failure under hi-directional seismic excitations is much higher than under uni-directional seismic excitations. Therefore, it is reasonable to consider hi-directional seismic excitations in evaluating the seismic safety of bridge systems scoured by a flood.

Fragility analysis is widely used for the seismic safety evaluation of a structure. In fragility analysis, damage evaluation is a crucial factor. Most of the present fragility analyses use the representative responses such as displacement and absorbed hysteretic energy as a tool of damage evaluation. But damage evaluation method that can represent the local damage of a structure is required in the case of piers of which the local damage can cause the whole failure of bridge system. Therefore this study proposes a damage index, which can represent the distribution and magnitude of local damage by using the Lee and Fenves'plastic-damage model. Using the proposed damage index, fragility curves and damage probability matrix of pier are produced and fragility analysis is performed.

The current seismic design criteria of the Korea Design Specifications for Highway Bridge (KDSHB 2000) adopted the seismic design concept and requirements of the AASHTO specifications. In order to obtain full ductile behavior under seismic loads, i.e. when applied seismic force is larger than design flexural strength of column section, a response modification factor is used. For the moderate seismicity regions, a design based on required ductility and required transverse reinforcement might be a reasonable approach. Ductility demand design or performance based design might be an appropriate approach especially for regions of moderate seismic risk. The procedure and application of this design approach are presented in this paper.

The purpose of this study is to develop a reasonable design for transverse confinement reinforcement considering ductility and required transverse confinement reinforcement of RC bridge columns. In order to develop relationships between the curvature ductility and the displacement ductility, the analysis for total 21,600 columns using the computer program NARCC have been carried out for parametric studies. Based on the results from the parametric studies, a correlation equation between the curvature ductility and the displacement ductility was developed. In addition, an equation for calculating the required transverse confinement reinforcement based on ductility demand was developed for seismic design of RC bridge columns. The equations proposed by this study will provide more reasonable and more effective design guidelines for performance-based seismic design of RC bridge columns.

The objective of the earthquake resistant design of structures is to satisfy on the one side the minimization of damage requirement under earthquakes with high probability of occurrence during the design life and on the other side the no collapse requirement under the design seismic event with low probability of occurrence. The two requirements are satisfied with the minimum strength of substructure as well as the ductile failure mechanism presented in the codes. In this study seismic performance is evaluated with two bridges which have steel box superstructures and T type, II type piers as substructures. In order to satisfy the two requirements redesign of both substructures and steel bearings are carried out.

In these days, The base isolation system is often used to improve the seismic capacity of the structures instead of conventional techniques of strengthening the structural members. The purpose of this study is to evaluate dynamic property evaluation of control equipment using lead Lead Rubber Bearing. In this study, a base isolation test of seismic monitoring control cabinet with LRB(lead rubber bearing) was performed. The cabinet will be installed on access floor in MCR(main control room) of nuclear power plant. Details and dynamic characteristics of the access floor were considered in the construction of testing specimen. N-S component of El Centre earthquake was used as seismic input motion. Acceleration response spectrums in the top of cabinets showed that the first mode frequency of cabinet with LRB(lead rubber bearing) was shifted to 7.5 Hz in compared with 18Hz of cabinet without LRB and the maximum peak acceleration was reduced in a degree of22 percent from 2.35 g to 1.84 g

Anticipating potential strong earthquakes, bracing dampers for better seismic performance are being developed in Korea, while similar ones are already developed in other countries. But, there are lack of relevant research on Slender Brace Dampers rather than hysteretic dampers, whose concept is also inappropriate for rehabilitation existed slender braced frame. For the development of Slender Brace Damper in slender braced frame, this research investigates Slender Brace Damper possessing various shapes of hyteretic damper through performing experimental test under cyclic loadings. As a result at this paper, Energy dissipation of test specimens (H35B20PS, H35B20TS, H20B60PS) are superior.

The design concepts using vibration reduction techniques, or structural control, have been proposed recently to protect infrastructure against earthquakes. The magnetorheological(MR) fluid damper is one of the most promising new devices for structural vibration reduction because of its mechanical simplicity, high dynamic range, low power requirement, large force capacity and robustness. In this study, the seismic performance of MR devices are compared with that of NZ systems as an attempt to provide some data for improving seismic design techniques applied to structures. For nonlinear time domain analysis of a base isolation system, a six-story building model is considered as a numerical example. The ground acceleration data of El Centre 1940, Mexico City 1985 and Kobe 1995 earthquakes are used as seismic excitations. The results show that MR damper systems for outperform NZ systems in wide-ranging seismic excitations with respect to intensity and period characteristics.

The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic demand on the isolated slab-on-steel girder bridge under cold climate conditions. To this end comparative test results are presented of laminated elastomeric and lead-rubber seismic isolators in warm and cold temperature conditions. At extremely cold temperatures, rubber "glass-harden" and as a result rubber bearings that may be used for seating bridges behave in a significantly non-linear fashion. From the nonlinear time history analysis of the isolated slab-on-steel girder bridge, larger forces are transferred to the substructures. however smaller displacement at superstructure is obtained under cold climate conditions. These phenomenons might need to be considered in design stage of the seismically isolated bridges.
