Source parameters of the December 13, 1996 Yeongweol earthquake are estimated using the grid test technique. Thirty polarities of P waves recorded at KMA, KIGAM, KSRS and JAPAN stations are used for the event. The obtained fault plane solution shows predominantly strike-slip motion with small amount of thrust component. The orientation of the fault is 180
$\pm$ 10$^{\circ}$ in strike, 50$\pm$ 5$^{\circ}$ in dip and 150$\pm$ 5$^{\circ}$ in rake, or 292$\pm$ 3$^{\circ}$ in strike, 65$\pm$ 5$^{\circ}$ in dip and 30$\pm$ 10$^{\circ}$ in rake. These solutions are very similar to those of earthquakes occurred at Sagju, Pohang and offshore Gunsan. The compressional axis of stress field is trending from ENE to WSW, which is consistent with the previously defined typical regional tectonic stress orientation in and around Korean Peninsula.. From the result of this study and other source mechanisms around the Korean Peninsula, we are of opinion that tectonic stress around the Korean Peninsula may be more attributed to the collision of Indian plate with the Eurasian plate than subduction of Pacific and Philippine plates. -
For 262 locations throughout the southern part of Korean peninsula, intensities of 13 December 1996 Yeongweol earthquake are estimated to make an isoseismal map and investigate attenuation properties in the southern part of Korea. Due to the inherent uncertainties in the estimation of intensities, obtained intensity map show quite scattered pattern of intensity distribution. Estimated intensities range from III to possibly Ⅷ. In case of intensity larger than Ⅵ, considerable damages such as fracturing of walls are reported one of the most significant feature of the intensity map is, considering its magnitude 4.7 reported by KMA, the felt area is appeared to be unusually large covering most of the Korean peninsula except Cheju island. This result indicates ether the magnitude is underestimated or the focus of this earthquake is much deeper. Assuming shallow(less than 10km) intraplate earthquake, we obtained average magnitude 5.6 by using the area encircled by isoseismal contour lines from intensity IV to intensity Ⅶ. This ambiguity can be clarified if more reliable focal depth is estimated by using teleseismic earthquake records in the future.

An earthquake of Richter magnitude 4.5 occurred on December 13, 1996 at 1:10 p.m. in Yung-Wol, Kang-Won-Do. Brief investigation on the effects of the earthquake has been performed on December 15 by the reconnaissance team of the Earthquake Engineering Society of Korea. Minor damages were observed in several structures including two elementary schools and two municipal office buildings. Most of the damages on R.C. beams is believed to be existing ones due to poor construction and maintenance of the structures those have been increased by the earthquake.

In seismology, instrumental data is covering from the end of the last century and showing large uncertainties in earthquake parameters before 1960. The number and quality of seismological stations have been in steady increased over all the past decades of this century, and this development is still going on. In Korea, reliable instrumental data is only available since 1978 from KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration). However instrumental earthquake observation have started since 1905 by Japanese and seven seismic stations were in operation in 1941. We have compiled and analyzed the early instrumental earthquake data between 1905 and 1942. Total 533 events were analyzed and for 60 events, their epicentral coordinates and magnitude were determined

The seismic records of the main shock and two after shocks of the Yeongwol Earthquake are studied based on the phsase analysis. The travel time curves with 12 different possible phases are constructed to analysis the phases of the records. which were provided by KIGAM seismic network. The results of phase analysis show that 1) The main shock (Ms=4.5) shows clear Pn phase but two after shocks (Ms=4 and Ms=2.5) do not show Pn phase. 2) The Pg or PmP phases look as first arrival phase in the after shock records whose edicental distance is smaller or larger than 150 km. 3) It is very difficult to identity the phases related to the Conrad discontinuity even if the Conrad discontiuity arrival exists. 4) The record of GRE station located outside of the Kueongsan Basin shows different arrival time of Pn phase, P-S duration time and frequency compared with those of the other stations located within the Kyeongsan Basin.

The earthquake data(M
$\geq$ 4.0) for post-1900 in the Korean Peninsula show temporal variation with active and quiet periods. The pattern is quite similar to northeastern China and Inner Zone of Southwest Japan. Yeongweol earthquake occurred in the seismic gap region of the Korean Peninsula. This is the first medium-size earthquake in inland region of the southern peninsula since 1978. The intensity based on the felt area estimation of about 400 places shows MMI III-Ⅷ in inland region. IIon Cheju Island and Ion Ulreung Island. The isoseismal of MMI Ⅶ shows an elongated circle in the direction of NE-SW and covers some parts of Jungdong-myon, Yeongweol-kun, Sindong-eup and Nam-myun, Jeongseon-kun. There occurred quite strong shaking, numerous cracks on the walls of buildings, falling and movement of slate and tiles on the roofs, falling of tiles from the wall and falling of materials from desks, rook falling from mountain and collapse of gravel lauers on the river side. The least square fitting of the intensity data of the Yeongweol earthquake by a popular intensity attenuation relation yields the following : I=Io+1.82249 - 0.65295*InR - 0.00707*R -
Amplication factor spectrum has been obtained and compared with standard Response Spectrum using the observed strong ground motions database. The observed ground motions from the Miramichi, Nahanni, Saguenay and New Madrid Earthquake (vertical component 19. horizontal component 36). which are estimated to represent domestic seismotectonic characteristics such as seismic source, attenuation, and site effect, are used for the analysis of amplication factor spectrum. Amplication factor has been calculated using both observed peak values and results from responses to the observed horizontal and vertical ground motions. The comparison shows that the amplication factors resultant from this study exceeds those of Standard Response Spectrum at relatively higher frequencies. The results implie that the characteristics of the seismic strong ground motion which may represent the domestic seismotectonic characteristics differs from those of Standard Response Spectrum, which are resultant from the strong ground motions observed mainly at the westem United States.

The December 13, 1996 Yeongweol earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was felt almost everywhere in southern part of the Korean Peninsula and Cheju Island, even though not feld in Tsushima Island at other places in Japan near to Korea. Production lines of semiconductor disk in electronic engineering companies of Gumi manufacturing complex were seriously affected by the shake of this earthquake. Total 17 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or above occurred within the area of 50km radius from Yeongweol in the period from the year 1400 to 1996. This group of earthquakes includes 12 events of magnitude 5.0 or above and 3 events of magnitude 6.0 or above. Among these events, 13 earthquakes are historical events of years 1400-1904. Most of them occurred in 15-16 centuries. The February 21, 1596 Jungseon-Pyeongchang event of magnitude 6.5 is the largest one up to now in the area. There are four instrumental earthquakes (years 1905-1996) of magnitude 4.0 or above in this area. An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred on 5th of November, 1919 at almost the same place as the December 13, 1996 earthquake of magnitude 4.5. Thus this event is preceded with the previous one by 77 years.

A dynamic fluid-structure-soil interaction analysis method is developed to investigate the effects of rocking motion on the seismic response of the 3-D flexible rectangular liquid storage tanks founded on the deformable ground. The governing equation of 3-D rectangular tanks subjected to the translational and rocking motions is obtained by Rayleigh-Ritz method. The dynamic stiffness matrix of the rigid surface foundation resting on the surface of a stratum are calculated by hyperelement method. The seismic responses of a 3-D flexible tank model founded on the deformable ground is calculated by combining the governing equation of the structural motion with the dynamic stiffness matrix of the rigid surface foundation.

A study to evaluate the seismic response of
$\frac{1}{2}$ -scaled liquid storage tank constructed in Hualien, is performed. And this study is to identify the liquid-structure-soil interaction by observed earthquake data ans analyzed results. After the calculation of soil impedance for the test site by SASSI code, 3-dimensional seismic response analysis is performed by BEM-FEM-Impedance Method with the consideration of liquid-structure-soil interaction when the tank is excited by real earthquake. The observed acceleration and hydrodynamic pressure are compared with the numerical results. This comparisons show good agreement in predominant frequency and maximum hydrodynamic pressure. And the free surface sloshing motion due to earthquake loadings is computed in time domain. -
The indirect boundary integral equation is formulated to analyze the behavior of a cavity in a multilayered half-plane subjected to earthquake waves. This formulation uses the fundamental solutions that are numerically calculated by the generalized transmission and reflection coefficient method. The free surface of the cavity without external excitation influences the behavior of the half-plane. Consequently this analysis adds the consideration of scattering-field into the analysis and the total motion field of the cavity is decomposed into the free-field and scattering-field motions. The free-field motion is obtained from the modification of the transmission and reflection coefficient method. The scattering-field motion is calculated is calculated by the indirect boundary value problem which has the ficticious boundaries and sources. In this study, P wave, SV wave, SH wave, and Rayleigh wave are analyzed respectively.

An analytical method is developed to study the propagation of surface waves across infilled trenches. The Green's function technique is used to estimate the reflection and transmission coefficients of Rayleigh waves across a semi-infinite plate inserted between two homogeneous quarter-spaces. After validating the method against experimental data, influence of the material contrast and the angle of incidence on the screening effectiveness of an infilled trench is examined.

This paper is a study on the deformation behavior of the reinforced concrete circular section column carrying bi-axial bending moment and axial force. That is, this is to clarify the deformation behavior of the reinforced concrete circular section column carrying bi-axial bending moment and axial force by analytic methods. The deformation behavior of circular section column under bi-axial uni-axial bending moment and axial force are compare with those of a square section column under the same conditions. Those of circular section column under bi-axial bending moment are decreased as compared with those of circular section column under uni-axial bending moment. The results mentioned above are the same under the axial force of 7tons and 11tons.

To investigate the effects of haunch repair on the system seismic performance of steel moment-resisting frames (steel MRFs), a case study was conducted for a 13-story frame damaged during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. It was assumed that only those locations with reported damage would be repaired with haunches. A new analytical modeling technique for the dual panel zone developed by the author was incorporated in the analysis. Both the inelastic static and dynamic analyses did not indicate detrimental side effects resulting from the repair. As a result of the increased strength in dual panel zones, yielding in these locations were eliminated and larger plastic rotation demand occurred in the beams next to the shallow end of the haunches. Nevertheless, the beam plastic rotation demand produced by the Sylmar record of 1994 Northridge earthquake was still limited to 1.7% radians. The repair resulted in a minor increase in earthquake energy input. In the original structure, the panel zones should dissipate about 80%(for the Oxnard record) and 70%(for the Sylmar record) of the absorbed energy, assuming no brittle failure of moment connections. After repair, the energy dissipated in the panel zones and beams were about equal.

A new method to prevent reinforced concrete columns from brittle failure. The method is called transversely reinforcing method in which only the critical regions are confined in steel tube. The steel tubes can change the failure mode of the latter columns from the shear to the flexure. The steel tubes also increase the compressive strength, shear strength and deformation capacity of the infilled concrete. The following conclusions are reached on bases of the study on the seismic performance of the high-strength RC rectangualr short columns confined in steel tube with shear span tho depth ratio of 2.0 The brittle shear failure of high-strength reinforced concrete short columns with large amount of longitudinal bars, which cannot prevented by using the maximum amount of welded hoops, can be prevented by using the steel tube which confines all the maximum amount of welded hoops, can be prevented by using the steel tube which confines all the concrete inclusive of cover concrete. High-strength RC short columns confined in rectangular steel tube provided excellent enhancement of seismic performance but, found that plastic buckling of the steel tube in the hinge regions tended to occur when the columns were subjected to large cyclic lateral displacements. In order to prevent the plastic buckling when the columns lies on large on cyclic lateral displacements, the steel ribs were used for columns. Tests have established that the columns provide excellent enhancement of seismic performance of inadequately confined columns.

The subject of this thesis is the vibration response of framed structure for buildings of "damed beam" type. In steel rigid frame with damped beams, web plate in mid span of beams is perforated to form a rectangular opening, only upper and lower flanges being remained. When the frame is subjected to horizontal seismic forces, dominant shearing deformation takes place in the opening part of the beams. Energy absorber in stalled in the opening is driven by relative displacement caused by the shearing deformation and provide the frame with damping force. First, static deformation of portal frames having a beam with the web opening is discussed and formulas of elastic deformation is derived.s derived.

Under sever earthquake, structural elements or structures may sustain a large number of inelastic excursions. To predict seismic damage of the structures with accuracy, much research for general definition of structural collapse and seismic damage analysis is required. The ductility method, the energy method and Park and Ang method for seismic damage analysis of structural elements and structures are compared in this paper. Also, the seismic damage analysis for system-level of structure is carried out using the ESDOF-system method and Powell method. To compare tendency of the seismic damage analysis using each methods, example analysis is accomplished for several cases of different structures and different earthquake excitation.

The objective of this study is to review the current stare of earthquake simulation techniques using the shaking table and check the reliability. One degree-of-freedom(d.o.f.)and three d.o.f. aluminium shear models were used and 4m
$\times$ 4m 6 d.o.f. shaking table was excitated in one horizontal direction to simulate 1940 El centro earthquake accelerogram (NS component). When the acceleration history of shaking table is compared to the desired one, it can be found that the overall histories are very similar, but that the lower frequency range (0~2 Hz) of the actual excitation has generally lower amplitude than that of the desired in fourier transform amplitude. Free vibration and white noise tests have shown almost the same values for natural frequencies, but shown quite different values for damping ratios, that is, 1.37% in case of r\free vibration test vs 14.76% in case of white noise test. The time histories of story shear versus story drift show the globally linear elastic behaviors. But the elliptical shape of the histories with one of the axis being the stiffness of the story implies the effect of viscous damping. -
The safety related equipments for use in nuclear power plants should be subjected to the seismic qualification in order to insure the safety of the nuclear power plant. This paper summarizes the seismic qualification test on the Low Voltage Motor Control Centers(MCC's) for use in Wolsong Nuclear Power Plants, Units 2, 3 and 4. The seismic qualification test was performed on the two prototype MCC's(a two-bay wide unit for Phase #1 Test and a five-bay wide unit for Phase #2 Test). The specimens were electrically powered and monitored during the test process. It was demonstrated that the specimens possessed sufficient structural and electrical integrity to withstand the required seismic conditions.

A study of effects of design parameters on the seismic responses of base isolated structure is performed to reduce the seismic responses using a linear tw0-degree of freedom system and a lumped-mass model of a nuclear power p;ant(NPP). From the simplified 2 DOF system the optimal isolation frequency being less than 1/10th of the fundamental frequency of superstructure is obtained, and the isolator damping minimizing the peak acceleration depends on superstructure frequency. From the time history analyses for lumped mass model of NPP the optimal damping is calculated as 40% in containment building and 65% in reactor internal structure. Similar results are obtained in 2 DOF system

Seven kinds of hysteric model were used and classified three groups considering the absorbing capacities of strain energy for each model. Four kids of each model. Four kinds of strong motion earthquake record (two of them were recorded in Japan and the others in U.S.A) are used. The yield strength of building was set in the ratio to the maximum input acceleration (Yield Strength / Maximum Acceleration = 0.5~3.0). Natural periods of structures were varied 0.1~3.0 second with an interval of 0.1 second. First group : Elastic-Plastic model, Ramberg-Osgood model Second group : Degrading Tri-liner model, Takeda model Third group : Slip model, Origin model, Max-D model Elastic-plastic response spectra were calculated for response velocities, displacement, energy input, ductility factors, accumulated ductility factors. The equivalent response values of M.D.O.F systems against S.D.O.F system were calculated to compare the relationship of two systems.

The super-structure in a soil-structure interaction analysis is commonly idealized as lumped parameter system. In this study, the complex shear wall structure is modeled using three different kinds of modeling techniques : 1) full FEM comparatively as an exact solution, 2)equivalent shear spring model assuming mainly shear deformations of the wall, 3) equivalent beam-stick model made by independent static analysis. Dynamic characteristics due to three different modeling methods are compared and investigated before performing structural response analysis. The beam-stick model in comparison to shear spring model gives closer dynamic responses when compared with the full FEM, even though it requires additional unit load static analyses.

This paper deals with the prediction and the evaluation of the measured seismic responses of the Hualien large-scale seismic test soil-structure system. The predicted analysis was carried out for the model structure by the computer code SASSI utilizing soil properties derived from geotechnical investigations and correlation analysis of recorded earthquake responses of soil. Utilizing the soil properties, seismic responses were predicted and compared with measured ones. The nonlinear effects of soil on structural responses were also evaluated.

Seismic responses of the Hualien large scale seismic test model on a layered soil site are estimated for two recorded earthquakes and the analysis results are then compared and evaluated with the recorded responses. The method adopted for the analysis is based on substructuring method using a lumped parameter model in both the frequency and time domain. the study results indicate that the proposed method can reasonably estimate the earthquake responses of a soil-structure interaction system for engineering purposes.

This paper presents the result of an international cooperative research on the post-correlation analysis of forced vibration tests and the prediction of earthquake responses of a large-scale seismic test structure. Through the post-correlation analysis, the properties of the soil layers are revised so that the best correlation in the responses may be obtained compared with the measured force vibration test data. Utilizing the revised soil properties as the initial linear values, the seismic responses are predicted for an earthquake using the equivalent linearlization technique based on the specified strain dependent characteristics of the shear moduli and damping ratios. It has been found that the predicted responses by the equivalent nonlinear procedure are in excellent agreement with the observed responses, which those using the initial properties are fairly off from the measured results.
