  • This paper deals with the stress singularity induced at the interface corner between the viscoelastic thin film and the rigid substrate as the film absorbs moisture from the ambient environment. Th e time domain boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The order of the free-edge singularity is obtained numerically for a given viscoelastic model. It is shown that the stress singularity factor is relaxed with time, while the order of the singularity increases with time for the viscoelastic model considered.

  • Based on classical viscoelastic damper, a brand-new damper is designed by the change of simple construction to implement vibration control for both translational vibration and rotational vibration simultaneously. Theoretic analysis has been carried out on the restoring force model and the control parameters. Two improved models are presented to obtain high simulation precision. The influence of the size, shape of the viscoelastic material, the ambient temperature and the response frequency on the vibration control effect is analyzed. The numerical results show that the new type viscoelastic damper is capable of mitigating the multi-dimensional seismic response of offshore platform and the response control effect has complicated relations with aforementioned related factors.

  • In this paper the dynamic behavior of a viscoelastic Timoshenko beam subjected to a concentrated moving load are studied analytically and numerically. The viscoelastic properties of the beam obey the linear standard model in shear and incompressible in bulk. The governing equation for Timoshenko beam theory is obtained in viscoelastic form using the correspondence principle. The analytical solution is based on the Fourier series and the numerical solution is performed with finite element method. The effects of the material properties and the load velocity are investigated on the responses by numerical and analytical methods. In addition, the results are compared with the Euler beam results.

  • In this paper, the boundary element analysis of viscoelastic strain energy release ,ate G(t) for the cracked linear viscoelastic materials is attempted. This study proposes the G(t) equation and the calculating method of G(t) by time-domain boundary element analysis for the viscoelastic solids. The G(t) is defined as the derivative of the viscoelastic potential energy $\Pi(t)$ with respect to crack length a. Two example problems are presented to show the applicability of the proposed method to the analysis of the cracked linear viscoelastic solids. Numerical results of example problems show the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The aim of this paper is to study the propagation of torsional surface waves in non-homogeneous isotropic layer of finite thickness placed over a homogeneous viscoelastic half-space, when both density and rigidity of the non-homogeneous medium are assumed to vary exponentially with depth. The frequency equations are obtained by using simple method of separation of variables. Further, it is seen that when viscoelastic parameter and non-homogeneity parameter is neglected, the dispersion equation gives the dispersion equations of Love waves in homogeneous, elastic and isotropic layer placed over homogeneous viscoelastic medium. The problem has been solved numerically and the effects of various inhomogeneities of the medium on torsional waves have been illustrated graphically.

  • The present study investigates flow character and heat transfer behaviors of viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid in a 2:1 rectangular duct. An axially-constant heat flux on bottom wall and peripherally constant temperature boundary condition(H1) was adopted. The Reiner-Rivlin fluid model is used as the normal stress model for the viscoelastic fluid and temperature-dependent viscosity model is adopted. The present results show a signifiant change of the main flow field which causes a large heat transfer enhancement. This phenomena can be explained by the combined effect of buoyancy, temperature-dependent viscosity and viscoelastic property on the flow.

  • Using LSM (laser scanning method) , the radius of curvature due to thermal deformation in polyimide film coated on Si substrate is measured. Since the polyimide film shows viscoelastic behavior, i.e., the modulus and deformation of the film vary with time and temperature, we estimate the relaxation modulus and the residual stresses of the polyimide film by measuring the radius of curvature and subsequently by performing viscoelastic analysis. The residual stresses relax by an amount of 10% at 100$^{\circ}C$ and 20% at 150$^{\circ}C$ for two hours.

  • A viscoelastic constitutive equation of rubber that is under small oscillatory load superimposed on large static deformation is proposed. The proposed model is derived through linearization of Simo's viscoelastic constitutive model and reference configuration transformation. The proposed constitutive equation is extended to a generalized viscoelastic constitutive equation that includes widely used Mormin's model as a special case using objective stress increment. Static deformation correction factor is introduced to consider the influence of Pre-strain on the relaxation function. The proposed constitutive model is tested fer dynamic behavior of rubber specimens with different carbon black contents. It is concluded from the test that the viscoelastic constitutive equation for filled rubber must include the influence of the static deformation on the time effects. The suggested constitutive equation with static deformation correction factor shows good agreement with test values.

  • In this paper, the spectral element model is derived for the vibration and stability analyses of an axially moving viscoelastic beam subjected to axial tension. The viscoelastic material is represented by using a one-dimensional constitutive equation of hereditary integral type. The accuracy of the present spectral element model is first verified by comparing the eigenvalues obtained by the present spectral element model-based SEM with those obtained by the exact theory and the conventional FEM. The effects of viscoelasticity on the vibration and stability of an example moving viscoelastic beam are numerically investigated.

  • Viscoelastic instabilities are of fundamental importance to understanding the physics of complex fluids and of practical importance to materials processing and fluid characterization. Significant progress has been made over the past 15 years in understanding instabilities in viscoelastic flows with curved streamlines and is reviewed here. Taylor-Couette flow, torsional flow between a cone and plate, and torsional flow between parallel plates have received special attention due to both the basic significance of these flows and their critical role in rheometry. First, we review the criteria for determining when these flows become unstable due to elasticity in the absence of inertia, and discuss the generalization of these criteria to more complex flows with curved streamlines. Then, focusing on experiments and simulations in the Taylor-Couette problem, we review how thermal sensitivity (i.e., the dependence of fluid viscosity and elasticity on temperature) and inertia affect the stability of viscoelastic flows. Finally, we conclude with some general thoughts on unresolved issues and remaining challenges related to viscoelastic instabilities.
