This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charge mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. The pre-charge mode employs the stair-case shaped current profile to accomplish shorter charging time while maintaining the reliable operation of the battery. The proposed system is specified to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 78A. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system.

A low frequency square wave electronic ballast for the high intensity discharge(HID) lamps using fuzzy logic controller is developed. This electronic ballast consists a buck converter, a low frequency square wave full bridge inverter, a high voltage pulse generator for the HID lamp ignition, an over current protection circuit and an 8-bit microcontroller. The ballast system is operated on the constant current mode during the HID lamp start-up process and the system is operated on the constant power mode during steady state. Experimental results show that the fuzzy logic control operation is carried out successfully by the 8-bit microcontroller PIC16F877 In this electronic ballast system, in spite of the limited control bandwidth caused by low operating speed of the microcontroller, the good performance in the constant lamp current characteristic is obtained. Acoustic resonance of the HID lamps can be effectively avoided because the instantaneous In lamp power is fully constant due to the low frequency square wave drive.

A hybrid ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator for audio applications is presented in this paper. The pulse generator for digital-to-analog converter alleviates the requirement of the external clock jitter and calibrates the coefficient variation due to a process shift and temperature changes. The input resistor network in the first integrator offers a gain control function in a dB-linear fashion. Also, careful chopper stabilization implementation using return-to-zero scheme in the first continuous-time integrator minimizes both the influence of flicker noise and inflow noise due to chopping. The chip is implemented in a 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology (I/O devices) and occupies an active area of 0.37 $mm^2$. The ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator achieves a dynamic range (A-weighted) of 97.8 dB and a peak signal-to-noise-plus-distortion ratio of 90.0 dB over an audio bandwidth of 20 kHz with a 4.4 mW power consumption from 3.3 V. Also, the gain of the modulator is controlled from -9.5 dB to 8.5 dB, and the performance of the modulator is maintained up to 5 nsRMS external clock jitter.

The first 77 GHz transceiver that applies a heterodyne structure-based linear frequency modulation-frequency shift keying (LFM-FSK) front-end module (FEM) is presented. An LFM-FSK waveform generator is proposed for the transceiver design to avoid ghost target detection in a multi-target environment. This FEM consists of three parts: a frequency synthesizer, a 77 GHz up/down converter, and a baseband block. The purpose of the FEM is to make an appropriate beat frequency, which will be the key to solving problems in the digital signal processor (DSP). This paper mainly focuses on the most challenging tasks, including generating and conveying the correct transmission waveform in the 77 GHz frequency band to the DSP. A synthesizer test confirmed that the developed module for the signal generator of the LFM-FSK can produce an adequate transmission signal. Additionally, a loop back test confirmed that the output frequency of this module works well. This development will contribute to future progress in integrating a radar module for multi-target detection. By using the LFM-FSK waveform method, this radar transceiver is expected to provide multi-target detection, in contrast to the existing method.

The goal of this paper is to developed a DSP based power analyzing and control system by 3-Dimensional (3-D) space current co-ordinates. A developed system is made up of 486-PC and DSP (Digital Signal Processor) board, Active Power Filter, Non-linear thyristor load, and Power analyzing and control program for Windows. Power is analyzed using signal processing techniques based on the correlation between voltage and current waveforms. Since power analysis algorithm is performed by DSP, power analysis is achieved in real-time even under highly dynamic nonlinear loading conditions. Combining control algorithm with power analysis algorithm is performed by DSP, power analysis is achieved in real-time even under highly dynamic nonlinear loading conditions. Combining control algorithm with power analysis algorithm, flexibility of the proposed system which has both power analysis mode and control mode, is greatly enhanced. Non-active power generated while speed of induction motor is controlled by modulating firing angle of thyristor converter, is compensated by Active Power Filter for verifying a developed system. Power analysis results, before/after compensation, are numerically obtained and evaluated. From these results, various graphic screens for time/frequency/3-D current co-ordinate system are displayed on PC. By real-time analysis of power using a developed system, power quality is evaluated, and compared with that of conventional current co-ordinate system. (author). refs., figs. tabs.
Generally, a single phase H-bridge converter feeding a single primary track is employed in conventional inductive power transfer systems. However, these systems may not be suitable for some high power applications due to the constraints of the semiconductor switches and the cost. To resolve this problem, a novel dual coupled primary tracks IPT system consisting of two high frequency resonant inverters feeding the tracks is presented in this paper. The primary tracks are wound around an E-shape ferrite core in parallel which enhances the magnetic flux around the tracks. The mutual inductance of the coupled tracks is utilized to achieve adjustable power sharing between the inverters by configuring the additional resonant capacitors. The total transfer power can be continuously regulated by altering the pulse width of the inverters' output voltage with the phase shift control approach. In addition, the system's efficiency and the control strategy are provided to analyze the characteristic of the proposed IPT system. An experimental setup with total power of 1.4kW is employed to verify the proposed system under power ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 with a transfer efficiency up to 88.7%. The results verify the performance of the proposed system.
This paper describes the design and implementation of a trigger circuit which can be series connected with main pulse circuit for a xenon flash lamp driver. For generating high voltage, the trigger circuit is designed as an inductive energy storage pulsed power modulator with 2 state step-up circuit consisting of a boost converter and a flyback circuit. In order to guarantee pulse width, a resonant capacitor on the output side of the flyback circuit is designed. This capacitor limits the output voltage to protect the flyback switch. In addition, to protect another power supply of xenon flash lamp driver from trigger pulse, the high voltage transformer which can carry the full current of main pulse is designed. To verify the proposed design, the trigger circuit is developed with the specification of maximum 23 kV, 0.6 J/pulse output and tested with a xenon flash lamp driver consisting of a main pulse circuit and a simmer circuit.

At the end of the 19th century, Edison's DC power system and Tesla's AC power system was debated in power market. Finally, AC system became the primary system of the power market because both step-up and step-down of voltage by using transformer and long-distance power transmission are easily possible. However, nowadays the power market takes some action for introducing DC system. Both domestic and foreign researchers are conducting the study on the DC system as well. Some researchers have conducted the studies on power quality and economic evaluation of the DC distribution system but DC distribution system is still controversial in terms of the effectiveness and reliability. In this paper, we calculate the reliability indices of the Low Voltage Direct Current(LVDC) distribution system considering arrangement of power electronics, layout of the distribution system, and distance between load points.

A new LED lamp driving technology with a charge pump instead of a conventional DC-DC converter is proposed. The proposed driving technology is used to control the LED lamp with digital dimming. The power loss in the zener diodes is reduced because the charging process of the capacitors is selectively controlled according to the digital control signal. From the experimental results, when dimming four LED lamps simultaneously, the average driving circuit efficiency of 89% is obtained, regardless of the dimming level. White light with color temperature over a range of 2800~7200K was produced by dimming control of red, green, blue and amber LED lamps with the proposed driving circuit. The characteristics of the driving circuits can be changed depending on the characteristics of the R, G, B, and A LED lamps. The efficiency of the driving circuits up to a maximum 89% can also be obtained depending on the combination of LED lamps. The driving technology with digital dimming control for LED lamps proposed in this paper would be effective for obtaining high efficiency in LED driving circuits and remote control of LED lamps using digital communications.
Input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) connected DC-DC converters enable low voltage rating switches to be used in high voltage input applications. In this paper, a DSP is adopted to generate digital phase-shifted PWM signals and to fulfill the closed-loop control function for ISOP connected two full-bridge DC-DC converters. Moreover, a stable output current sharing control strategy is proposed for the system, with which equal sharing of the input voltage and the load current can be achieved without any input voltage control loops. Based on small signal analysis with the state space average method, a loop gain design with the proposed scheme is made. Compared with the conventional IVS scheme, the proposed strategy leads to simplification of the output voltage regulator design and better static and dynamic responses. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified by the simulation and experimental results of an ISOP system made up of two full-bridge DC-DC converters.
