  • This study is a literature research on critical mathematics education. In this study, we analyzed the literature about critical theory and critical education, especially focused on Freire's educational works. And also, we reviewed studies and lesson examples about critical mathematics education. The purpose of this research is to improve understanding about critical mathematics education. We found the connection between the goals, teaching methods and contents of critical mathematics education and Freire's theory of critical pedagogy. Critical mathematics lessons stimulated student's sense of social agency and induced student's inquiry. Critical mathematics education has a merit on aspect of mathematical connection and communication by adopting social issues and student's discussion in mathematics lessons. Although there are many obstacles to overcome, critical mathematics education is one of the educational direction to seek.

  • Fairy-tales give students opportunities to build connections between a problem-solving situation and mathematics as well as to communicate solutions through writing, symbols, and diagrams. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to introduce how to use fairy-tales in elementary mathematics classroom in order to develope student's mathematical concepts and process in terms of the following areas: ⑴ reconstructing literature ⑵ understanding concepts ⑶ problem posing activity. To be useful, mathematics should be taught in contexts that are meaningful and relevant to learners. Therefore using fairy-tales as a vehicle to teach mathematics gives students a chance to develope mathematics understanding in a natural, meaningful way, and to enhance problem posing and problem solving ability. Further, future study will continue to foster how fairy-tales literatures will enhance children's mathematics knowledge and influence on their mathematics performance.

  • In this study, we investigated the application of oriental history of mathematics in school mathematics teaching. We set up three study problems to achieve this purpose. First, we analyze the middle and high school mathematics textbooks and auxiliary books. Second, we survey the mathematics teacher's knowledge and degree of application on history of mathematics. Third, we develop the teaching and learning materials on oriental history of mathematics. We performed three study-methods to settle above study problem. First, we analyzed 24 textbooks and auxiliary books for study problem 1. There were 6 middle school mathematics textbooks and 6 auxiliary books and also 6 high school mathematics textbooks and 6 auxiliary books. We categorized the contents into "anecdote", "systematization", "application of problem", "expansibility of thought", and "comparative of the contents". Second, we surveyed the 78 mathematics teachers's knowledge and degree of application using questionnaire about knowledge and application on history of mathematics. The questionnaire was made up of four types of question; the effect of material about history of mathematics, the understanding of western history of mathematics, the understanding of oriental history of mathematics; the direction of development of teaching material. Third, we exemplified the teaching and learning materials about three categories: "anecdote", "comparative of the contents".

  • The Ministry of Education Science and Technology represented National Mathematics Education Advance Plan in 2012. The plan is focused on reinforcing mathematics education, improving understanding about mathematics, and enhancing self-guided learning. After the National Mathematics Education Advance Plan new middle school mathematics textbooks have been developed and they will be used from 2013. The purpose of this study is to analyse those mathematics textbooks to find how the National Mathematics Education Advance Plan is affected to the mathematics textbooks. This study found some important aspects affected from the Advance Plan to those textbooks and some implications for the future Korean mathematics education.

  • Euclid's elements have been recognized as a significant textbook in mathematics and mathematics education because of importance of its contents and methodology. This study discussed how the elements is connected with understanding of math textbooks in elementary school, trying to reveal the value for teacher training. First, when details in elementary textbooks were considered in aspect of elements, the importance of elements was illustrated with the purpose of understanding contents of elementary school by examining educational implications. In addition, the study discussed the value of the elements as the place for teachers and would-be teachers to experience math system.

  • There are a lot of causes of under-achievement in elementary mathematics, one of which may be lack of previous learning elements. We focus on the understanding of place value. The purpose of this study is to analyze underachievers' levels of understanding of place value concepts and to find the types of place value tasks that they have had special difficulty. For this purpose, an individual test called as "the Six Tasks of Place Value(SToPV)"was applied to ten third grade mathematics underachievers in elementary school. The test is a type of place value concept tests and requires one-on-one interview with some preparation materials. The participants' reactions were analysed according to the framework by Berman(2011). The result of analysis shows that third grade mathematics underachievers tend to have a great difficulty understanding the place value concepts. Also the types of difficult tasks were various from individual to individual. Based on the test results and discussion, we suggested some implications for diagnosing place value concepts of mathematics underachievers.

  • The purpose of this paper was to develop manipulative materials to teach the angle concepts and construct a teaching-learning program by using that. Furthermore, this study analyzed how does the program affect students understanding of the angle concepts. To check the effects of learning activities with manipulative materials on the understanding of an angle concepts, applied observation during class and write a mathematics journal writing, a description of students impressions at the end of the class and analyzed before and after test paper. We find that students approached the subject more friendly and knew well about the mathematical concepts by using materials. Furthermore, this activity helped that way to solve add and subtract of the angle, estimate ability, round angle concept, positive response in mathematics learning.

  • Recently our society confronts with the concern over the college students' apparent lack of understanding and interesting of mathematics. In late 1980s the calculus reform movement in US was triggered to increase both passing rates and a general interest in the subject. The purpose of this paper is to investigate teaching of college calculus and its curriculum in order to promote students' interesting and understanding. We deal with 4 questions. Firstly, we research the history and motivation of the calculus reform movement in US. Secondly, we do case study about the debate between reformed and traditional calculus. Then we evaluate the effectiveness of reformed calculus in comparison to traditional calculus. Finally we investigate possible ways to apply reformed calculus in our university mathematics education and suggest some points to improve teaching calculus.

  • The purpose of the study is to introduce how tessellation can be used and integrated to connect geometry to pattern in elementary mathematics educations. Tessellation examples include transformations such as translational symmetry, rotational symmetry, reflection symmetry, and glide reflection symmetry. In addition, many examples of tessellation using softwares such as Escher, TesselMania!, and LOGO programs. Further, future study will continue to foster students and teachers to try to construct their alive mathematics knowledge. The study of geometry and patterns require a rich teaching and learning environment provided by in-depth understanding of thinking connections to objects in real world.

  • Teacher reflection as a form of professional development has been an enduring interest in education that can be traced back to Dewey. Information about how teachers interpret and analyze their students' learning would help us understand difficulties in teaching and learning. Moreover, it can be useful for teacher education by improving teaching methods. The purpose of this research was to understand how mathematics teachers reflected on their students' understanding. For the purpose of this study, I investigated four U.S.A. mathematics teachers in a middle school. In particular, I discussed Assess instances among the teachers' reflections on their students' thinking and changes of the reflections as time went by. The results showed two different types of Assess instances and shifts by time.
