Study on the perception of science gifted/talented students toward Nobel science prize (과학영재들의 노벨과학상에 대한 인식 조사 연구)

  • One of main purposes to educate gifted/talented science students is to express their giftedness. Most of all, it is necessary to examine thoughts of gifted/talented students including a challenge and preparation of it, because their perception of science and scientists can affect on way of thinking, study course or occupation. To investigate this, we studied on the perception of science gifted/talented students toward Nobel science prize. They have lower possibility of Korean scientists' winning Nobel science prize, but they think when they grow up adult they can win it. And most of them have a challenge of winning Nobel prize. It is necessary to study educational stimuli and strategies for gifted/talented students to prosper a challenge of science.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the views of STS by science gifted and talented students. A multiple-choice format questionnaire HS-VOSTS was administered to 134 science gifted and talented students. We found that most of students had possessed the tentativeness of scientific knowledge. Science gifted and talented students mainly agreed that government should not control scientists' researches. Science gifted and talented students emphasized that scientists should consider the positive and negative influences of research products. There was no significant difference according to the gender in the view of science gifted and talented students on the definition of science, the external and internal sociology of science, and epistemology. This study would provide implication for the development of gifted students' program and curriculum.

Key Factors of Talented Scientists' Growth and ExpeI1ise Development (과학인재의 성장 및 전문성 발달과정에서의 영향 요인에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to explore key factors of expertise development of talented scientists who achieved outstanding research performance according to the stages of expertise development and dimensions of individual-domain-field. To fulfill the research purpose, 31 domestic scientists who were awarded major prizes in the field of science were interviewed in-depth from March to September, 2007. Stages of expertise development were analyzed in light of Csikszentmihalyi's IDFI (individual-domain-field interaction) model. Self-directed learning, multiple interests and finding strength, academic and liberal home environment, and meaningful encounter were major factors affecting expertise development in the exploration stage. In the beginner stage, independence, basic knowledge on major, and thirst for knowledge at university affected expertise development. Task commitment, finding flow, finding their field of interest and lifelong research topic, and mentor in formal education were the affecting factors in the competent stage. Finally, placing priority, communication skills, pioneering new domain, expansion of the domain, and evaluation and support system affected talented scientists' expertise development in the leading stage. The meaning of major patterns of expertise development were analyzed and described. Based on these analyses, educational implications for nurturing scientists were suggested.

Exploring the Professional Development Program for Science High School Teachers using Partnership with Scientists (과학자와의 파트너십을 활용한 과학고 교사 전문성 신장 프로그램 탐색)

  • This research explored the direction of professional development programs for science high school science teachers through partnership with scientists. Eighteen science teachers and twenty three experts attended as partners during two weeks program. To find any finding and implication, survey and interview were conducted with participant, and participant observation was conducted to understand interaction between them. It was found that the professional development program through partnership with scientists would contribute to increasing expertise of science high school teachers. From findings, it was suggested to use professional development program where scientists participate for the professional development of science high school teachers.

Gifted Children′s Perceptions of Scientists (초등학교 영재 학생들의 과학자에 대한 인식 조사)

  • In this study, gifted children's perceptions of scientists were investigated. The subjects were 91 elementary students who were registered in educational program for the gifted. This study was conducted using Draw-A-Scientist-Test (DAST) and questionnaires about the life of scientists. As the results, most scientists were depicted as well-featured and young people. There was a tendency that boys mainly described scientists as male, but girls as female. Many of the students perceived scientists as those who did significant works to try to help other people and pursue the novelty The general perceptions of the gifted on scientists were positive. Majority of students, however, perceived that scientists worked indoors with glassware or chemicals. Relatively, fewer students described books, other materials, and technologies including computer. Many of the students perceived scientists'work as research or invention. Concerning working pattern, students mainly replied that scientists worked alone. In order to make students'restricted perceptions enhance for opened and flexible manner, various educational methods need to be implemented.

Perception of Science High School Students on Modeling Activity (모델링 활동에 대한 과학고등학교 학생들의 인식)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of science high school students for modeling module that contain scientists' thinking process. Modeling modules about 'gas diffusion', 'ion conductivity' and 'ion mobility' were applied to science high school students. Interview, lab report, and dialogue were analyzed to comprehend features of modeling module. Students who performed modeling modules perceived that modeling modules were appropriate to experience scientists' research process. Modeling modules were kind of activity to raise 'muscle of thinking', to be needed 'new views' and 'various representations', and to contain 'designing laboratory process'. Therefore, the development of various modeling modules is needed in the near future.

  • This study investigated the background of the intellectual ability that consists of family environment, intellectual priority, career aims, intellectual extracurricular activities of the students who were selected for the Science Gifted Education Center. We performed a survey and analysis of the students at the Science Gifted Education Center in order to explore their learning attitudes and intellectual ability, as well as the elements that represent their attitudes. As a result of the study, I found that the students in the Science Gifted Education Center generally had good economic and family backgrounds that showed no significant hardship in supporting the students. The families were also highly educated intellectually. In case the talented students in Science desired to be pure scientists, they liked the Science subjects and enjoyed reading science books. It was mostly the male students that took part. As for the attitude toward intellectual ability, they expected to improve their abilities as they gained knowledge and increased their intelligence through learning, although they didn't confide with us on their intelligence quotients. Analysis of the Differences in Perception about Scientists between Science Class and Convergence Class Applicants in Gifted Science Education Center (과학영재교육원의 과학반과 융합반에 지원한 학생들의 과학자에 대한 인식 차이 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of convergence gifted students through the their perception of the differences about scientists between Science class and Convergence class in gifted science education center. Consequently, this article reports that there are differences in the perception about scientists was distinction between applicants of Convergence and Science class. Science class applicants mainly recognized scientists as pure scientists, but Convergence class applicants recognized scientist were including mathematician, artist, architect, etc. Also Convergence class applicants thought that affective domain including 'effort', 'patience', 'interest' was more important that Science class applicants. On the other hand, when they described the scientists, Science class applicants knew their achievements as scientists more specifically than Convergence class. And to conclude, the characteristics were different between Convergence and Science class applicants in gifted science education center. Based on the result of this study, this paper suggests the following: Firstly, conceptual study is urgent about convergence gifted students in their definition and characteristics. Secondly, information regarding the criteria to select student for convergence class in gifted science education center. Finally, when teaching convergence gifted students, attention should be paid to their characteristics such affective domain.

An Analysis on Views of Nature of Science and Science Inquiry of Science Gifted Students (과학 영재의 과학 본성과 탐구 관점 분석)

  • This study aims to find out science talented students' percentage of cognition about the views of nature of science and science inquiry which are essential for having a good understanding with science concepts. Each group of 40 science gifted students and 35 ordinary students was tested with a test of views of nature of science and science inquiry which consisted of 19 items with index of content validity 97% and reliability index 0.86, then its results being compared and analyzed. A group of science gifted students' percentage of cognition about the views of nature of science ranges from 20% to 97.5% -although it differs according to detailed views-showing its mean of 67% (50% in a group of ordinary students). Especially, the percentage of cognition about the sub view that there can be different opinions among scientists was high among woman science gifted students. A group of science gifted students' percentage of cognition about the views of science inquiry ranges from 27.5% to 77.5% -although it differs according to detailed views- showing 53% in their mean (41.8% in a group of ordinary students). Especially, the percentage of cognition about the sub view that scientists can have different research methods was high among woman science gifted students. The percentage of mistaken cognition by science gifted students about views of nature of science and about views of science inquiry was 33%, 47% respectively.

Analyzing the Creative Process of the Pauling's Research for Science Gifted Education (과학영재를 가르치기 위한 창의적 화학자 폴링의 연구과정 분석)

  • Creativity is always important in science gifted education. There are many research results about enhancing the creativity. One of the ways of enhancing students scientific' creativity is to let them think and research like scientists so that they can follow how scientists find problems and solve them. So in this study, scientific creative elements were extracted from the Pauling's detailed examples of research process by using many documents. Abductive reasoning, paradox, changing the perspective, modeling, simplifying, converging thinking, diverging thinking, and metaphorical thinking are thinking methods that were extracted from the Pauling's research process. Repeated experiment, co-experiment, using both theories and experiments, and social obligation as a scientist are research methods. Scientific creative elements that were extracted suggest some direction that have more scientific creativity, more ability to find problems, and more ability to form theories in science education or in science gifted education.
