  • $LiCoO_{2}$ thin films have received attention as cathodes of thin film microbatteries in these days. In this study, $LiCoO_{2}$ thin films are fabricated by a sol-gel spin coating method followed by a post-annealing process. The thermal decomposition behaviour of precursor is investigated by TG/DTA analysis. The change of crystallinity, microstructure and electrochemical properties of final films as the drying temperature changes are also studied by XRD, SEM and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling test. The relationship between the discharge capacity and the drying temperature are intensively investigated in this work.

  • Along with the fast development of electronics, the demands of portable electronics and wireless sensors are growing rapidly. The need for self-powering materials capable of powering the electrical devices attached to them is increasing, The piezoelectric effect of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) can be used for this purpose. PVDF has a special crystal structure consisting of a ${\beta}$-phase that can produce piezoelectricity. In this paper, multilayer PVDF films were fabricated to increase the ${\beta}$-phase content. A solution of 10% concentration N;N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) in PVDF (PVDF/DMAc) was used to fabricate the films via spin coating technique with the following optimum process parameters: a spin rate of 850 rpm, spin time of 60 s, drying temperature of $60^{\circ}C$, and drying time of 30 min, Compared with single-layer PVDF films, the multilayer films exhibited higher ${\beta}$-phase content. The ${\beta}$-phase content of the films increased gradually with increasing number of layers until 4, Maximum ratio of ${\beta}$-phase content was 7.72.

  • The thin film processing and the applicability as a IMD material of SiO2 aerogels providing ultralow dielec-tric properties were studied. The SiO2 aerogel films with 0.5g/㎤ density (78% porosity) and 4000~21000$\AA$ thickness could be prepared at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 1160 psig by supercritical drying of wet-gel films, which were spin-coated at the spin rate of 1000~7000 rpm on p-Si(111) wafer under the isopropanol atmosphere. The optimum viscosity of polymeric SiO2 sols for spin coating was in the range of 10~14 cP. The main fac-tors being able to control the film thickness and microstructures were found to be sol concentration, spin rpm, and aging time of wet-gel films. The dielectric constant of the SiO2 aerogel thin film was around 2.0 low enough to be applied to the next generation semiconductor device beyond the giga level.

  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy of gamma-irradiated fresh broccoli and kimchi cabbage was conducted to identify their irradiation history. Different pretreatments, such as freeze-drying (FD), oven-drying (OD), alcoholic-drying (ALD), and water-washing and alcoholic-drying (WAD) were used to lower the moisture contents of the samples prior to ESR analysis. The non-irradiated samples exhibited a single central signal ($g_0$=2.0007) with clear effect of $Mn^{2+}$, especially in kimchi cabbage. Upon irradiation, there was an increase in the intensity of the central signal, and two side peaks, mutually spaced at 6 mT, were also observed. These side peaks with $g_1$ (left)=2.023 and $g_2$ (right)=1.985 were attributed to radiation-induced cellulose radicals. Leaf and stem in broccoli, and root and stem in kimchi cabbage provided good ESR signal responses upon irradiation. The signal noise was reduced in case of ALD and WAD pretreatments, particularly due to $Mn^{2+}$ signals. The ALD treatment was found most feasible to detect the improved ESR spectra in the irradiated samples.

  • The adsorption of proteins on the surface of glass slides is essential for the construction of protein chips. Here, we report that a Histidine (His)-tagged protein protein has been efficiently adsorbed on glass coated with nickel. A variety of nickel chloride-coated plates were prepared by the spin-coating method and adsorbed to the His-tagged protein. When the protein was adsorbed onto the surface of a variety of nickel chloride-coated glass slides, the efficiency of protein adsorption was dependent upon the coating conditions such as nickel chloride concentration, the spin speed and the drying temperature. The slides appropriate for protein adsorption were obtained when the slides were coated with 11%(w/w) of $NiCl_2$ at the spin speed of 4000 rpm for 20 sec and then dried at higher than 40°C. The physical properties of their nickel chloride thin layer were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy, finding that the nickel chloride particles were around 10 nm in diameter and uniformly crystallized at 101 faces. These results show that nickel chloride-coated slides prepared by the spin-coating method are utilizable for the construction of Histagged protein chips.

  • This study reports the fabrication and application of semitransparent Cu nanoparticle layers. Spin coating and subsequent drying of a Cu colloid solution were performed to deposit Cu nanoparticle layers onto Si and glass substrates. As the spin speed of the spin coating increases, the density of the nanoparticles on the substrate decreases, and the agglomeration of nanoparticles is suppressed. This microstructural variation affects the optical properties of the nanoparticle layers. The transmittance and reflectance of the Cu nanoparticle layers increase with increasing spin speed, which results from the trade-off between the exposed substrate area and surface coverage of the Cu nanoparticles. Since the glass substrates coated with Cu nanoparticle layers are semitransparent and colored, it is anticipated that the application of a Cu nanoparticle-dielectric bilayer structure to transparent solar cells will improve the cell efficiency as well as aesthetic appearance.

  • Wet gel with surface modification by TMCS was redispersed in EtOH and redispersed silica sol for coat-ing was prepared. After spin coating of redispersed sol was conducted on silicon substrate, processes of drying(8$0^{\circ}C$) and heat treatment(>25$0^{\circ}C$) were, followed at ambient pressure. The influence of heat treat-ment of properties of film was observed, changing temperature at heat treatment. The optimum redisp-ersion condition for stable silica sol was wet gel:EtOH=1g:110$m\ell$ and the concentration and viscosity of redispersed silica sol with average particle size of 30nm were 0.11 M, 2.0-2.2 cP respectively. Crack-free thin film with the refractive index of 1.14 and thickness of 400 nm was obtained through drying at 8$0^{\circ}C$ and subsequent heat treatment at 45$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs respectively after spin coating of 1500rpm, 10 times.

  • TiO$_2$thin films were prepared on the glass by a conventional spin coating method with $TiO_2$ sol(30wt%, anatase). The thickness of the thin films were controlled by the number of coating cycles: one cycle is composed of spin coating, drying, and heating process. The reaction rate of the film was obtained by the photodecomposition of gaseous benzene under 0.44 and 2.0mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$ UV light on the film surface. For an incident UV light intensity of 0.44mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the reaction rate was increased with the thickness of the film, caused by extent of surface area, but there was no change over the thickness of about 4$\mu\textrm{m}$. The porous $TiO_2$ thin film has comparatively vast effective surface area, which under relatively high-intensity UV illumination causes the reaction rate to be controlled by the film thickness.

  • Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were prepared by a sol-gel method. The structural and electrical properties were investigated by varying drying and annealing temperatures. The thin films were coated (250 nm) by spin-coating method on glass substrates. The optimum drying temperature of ZnO thin films was 300$^{\circ}C$ where the resistivity was the lowest and the preferred c-axis orientation was the highest. The annealing was carried out in air and inert atmospheric conditions. The degree of the preferred c-axis orientation was estimated. The highest preferred c-axis orientation was recorded at 600$^{\circ}C$. The preferred c-axis orientation and grain growth resulted in the mobility enhancement of the ZnO thin films, and the lowest resistivity was 0.62${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ at 600$^{\circ}C$.

  • Ferroelectric lanthanum-substituted Bi$_4$Ti$_3$O$_{12}$(BLT) thin films were fabricated by spin-coating onto a Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrate by metalorganic decomposition technique. The grain size in BLT thin films were prepared with controlled by various drying process. The effect of grain size on the crystallization and ferroelectric properties were investigated by x-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscope. The dependence of crystallization and electrical properties are related to the grain size in BLT thin films with different drying temperature. The remanent polarization of BLT thin film increases with the increasing grain size. The value of 2P$_{r}$ and E$_{c}$ of BLT thin film dried at 45$0^{\circ}C$ were 25.9 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 85 kV/cm, respectively. The BLT thin film with larger grain size has better fatigue properties. The fatigue properties revealed that small grained film showed more degradation of switching charge than large grained films.lms.s.
