  • A new adder-and-accumulator (A$^2$C) adapted to pipelined Δ$\Sigma$ modulators is proposed in this paper. With the viewpoint of area consumption, registers are removed in the existing pipelined Δ$\Sigma$ modulator, and then adder and accumulator are merged. In order to optimize area consumption, speed and power consumption, dynamic carry look-ahead adder (CLA) is adopted in $A^2$C. Moreover, a guideline for the transistor sizing in CLA with regard to the minimization of the energy-delay-area product (EDAP) is proposed[1]. The proposed $A^2$C has been verified by HSPICE simulations.

  • This paper presents a low-power high-resolution band-pass ${\Sigma}{\Delta}$ ADC for accelerometer applications. The proposed band-pass ${\Sigma}{\Delta}$ ADC consists of a high-performance 6-th order feed-forward ${\Sigma}{\Delta}$ modulator with 1-bit quantization and a low-power, area-efficient digital filter. The ADC is fabricated in 180 nm 1P6M mixed-signal CMOS process with a die area of $5mm^2$. This high-resolution ADC got 90 dB peak signal to noise plus distortion ratio (SNDR) and 96 dB dynamic range (DR) over 4 kHz bandwidth, while the intermediate frequency (IF) is shifting from 100 KHz to 200 KHz. The power dissipation of the chip is 5.6 mW under 1.8 V (digital)/3.3 V (analog) power supply.

  • This paper presents a clock regenerator using two $2^{nd}$ order ${\sum}-{\Delta}$ (sigma-delta) modulators for wide range of dividing ratio as defined in HDMI standard. The proposed circuit adopts a fractional-N frequency synthesis architecture for PLL-based clock regeneration. By converting the integer and decimal part of the N and CTS values in HDMI format and processing separately at two different ${\sum}-{\Delta}$ modulators, the proposed circuit covers a very wide range of the dividing ratio as HDMI standard. The circuit is fabricated using 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS and shows 13 mW power consumption with an on-chip loop filter implementation.

  • A low voltage, low power delta-sigma modulator is proposed for cardiac pacemaker applications. A cascade of delta-sigma modulator stages that employ a feedforward topology has been used to implement a high-resolution oversampling ADC under the low supply. An inverter-based switched-capacitor circuit technique is used for low-voltage operation and ultra-low power consumption. An experimental prototype of the proposed circuit has been implemented in a $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and it achieves 61-dB SNDR, 63-dB SNR, and 65-dB DR for a 120-Hz signal bandwidth at 7.6-kHz sampling frequency. The power consumption is only 280 nW at 1-V power supply.

  • A wideband continuous-time sigma delta modulator for wireless application is implemented in 130nm CMOS. The SNR for small input signal is improved using a proposed adaptive quantizer which can effectively scale the quantization level. The modulator comprises a second-order loop filter for low power consumption, 4-bit quantizer and DAC for low jitter sensitivity and high linearity. Designed circuit achieves peak SNR of 51.36B with 10MHz signal Bandwidth and 320MHz sampling frequency dissipating 30mW.

  • After a single-stage, second-order, multiple-feedback ${\Delta}-{\Sigma}$ modulator and a two-stage, second-order MASH ${\Delta}-{\Sigma}$ modulator were analyzed and simulated using Simulink and Matlab and their characteristics were compared, the following result was obtained: 1) The two ${\Delta}-{\Sigma}$ modulators do not have group delay distortion. 2) The characteristics of the noise shaping are nearly identical. As a result of the noise shaping, the power spectral densities have slope of 40 dB/dec. 3) There was no spurious tone. 4) The input range of the two modulators is from -1 to +1 in common. 5) Because the output of the two-stage MASH modulator is 2-bits (4-levels), design of frequency dividers and charge pumps of PLL are more demanding.

  • This paper describes the third order feedforward delta-sigma modulator with inverter-based integrators and a 1.5bit comparator for the application of audio signal processing. The proposed 3rd-order delta-sigma modulator is multi-bit structure using 1.5 bit comparator instead of operational amplifier. This delta-sigma modulator has high SNR compared with single-bit 4th-order delta-sigma modulator in a low OSR. And it minimizes power consumes and simplified circuit structure using inverter-based integrator and using inverter-based integrator as analogue adder. The modulator was designed with 0.18um CMOS standard process and total chip area is $0.36mm^2$. The measured power cosumption is 28.8uW in a 0.8V analog supply and 66.6uW in a 1.8V digital supply. The measurement result shows that the peak SNDR of 80.7 dB, the ENOB of 13.1bit and the dynamic range of 86.1 dB with an input signal frequency of 2.5kHz, a sampling frequency of 2.56MHz and an oversampling rate of 64. The FOM (Walden) from the measurement result is 269 fJ/step, FOM (Schreier) was calculated as 169.3 dB.

  • This paper presents an incremental delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for a single-electrode capacitive touch sensor. The second-order cascade of integrators with distributed feedback (CIFB) delta-sigma modulator with 1-bit quantization was fabricated by a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process. In order to achieve a wide input range in this incremental delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter, the shielding signal and the digitally controlled offset capacitors are used in front of a converter. This circuit operated at a supply voltage of 2.6 V to 3.7 V, and is suitable for single-electrode capacitive touch sensor for ${\pm}10-pF$ input range with sub-fF resolution.

  • The advantage of the DSM which employ multi-bit quantizer is the increased SNR at the modulator's output. Typically 6 dB improvement is effected for every one additional bit. But multi-bit quantizer evidently requires multi-bit DAC in the feedback loop. The integral linearity error of the feedback DAC has direct impact upon the system performance and degraded SNR of the system. In order to mitigate the negative impact the DAC has on the system performance, many DEM(Dynamic Element Matching) schemes has been proposed. Among the proposed schemes, four schemes(DER,CLA,ILA,DWA) are explained and its performance has been compared. DWA(Data Weighted Averaging) method shows the best performance of the all.

  • This paper presents a SDM using the FDPA technique. The FDPA technique is the added feedback path which is the delayed path of DAC output. The designed SDM increases the SNR by adding the delayed digital feedback path. The proposed SDM is easily implemented by eliminating the analog feedback path. Through the MATLAB modeling, the optimized coefficients are obtained to design the SDM. The designed SDM has a power consumption of $220{\mu}W$ and SNR(signal to noise ratio) of 81dB at the signal-bandwidth of 20KHz and sampling frequency of 2.56MHz. The SDM is designed using the $0.18{\mu}m$ standard CMOS process.
