  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to perform a scoping review to describe clinical study trends on Qigong in order to identify further directions of Qigong in Korean medicine. Methods: Under the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework, PubMed was searched to identify articles published from January 1, 2019 to June 28, 2021. A total of 224 articles were retrieved. Results were systematically filtered by two independent reviewers based on inclusion/exclusion criteria. Publication information, disease, intervention and research results of a total of 153 articles were extracted and analyzed. Results: Asia had the largest number of Qigong studies (82 studies, 65%). Most research studies were conducted in the academic field of Medicine (n=109, 86.5%), including Complementary and Alternative Medicine (n=35), Medicine (miscellaneous) (n=15), and Oncology (n=15). Based on ICD-10 classification, Mental and Behavioral Disorder (n=25, 19.8%) was the most frequently analyzed decease, followed by Neoplasm (n=24) and Disease of the Nervous system (n=12). Almost half of all studies were Systematic Reviews. RCTs only accounted for 25.4%. Interventions were very diverse and inconsistent. Sixty (47.6%) studies analyzed Qigong as a single intervention. In 66 cases, Qigong was analyzed as part of a large category such as Mind-Body intervention. Most studies designed a Donggong (動功) program. The age of the population was relatively high as 47.1% of all studies were conducted on middle aged or older adults. Conclusions: These findings suggest that further standardized research on Qigong, especially Junggong (靜功), needs to be conducted by developing research protocols and practice programs to verify effects of Qigong and utilize Qigong as a medical intervention in Korean Medicine.

  • Objectives: The current study presents a new conceptual framework for physician-induced demand that comprises several influential components and their interactions. Methods: This framework was developed on the basis of the conceptual model proposed by Labelle. To identify the components that influenced induced demand and their interactions, a scoping review was conducted (from January 1980 to January 2017). Additionally, an expert panel was formed to formulate and expand the framework. Results: The developed framework comprises 2 main sets of components. First, the supply side includes 9 components: physicians' incentive for pecuniary profit or meeting their target income, physicians' current income, the physician/population ratio, service price (tariff), payment method, consultation time, type of employment of physicians, observable characteristics of the physician, and type and size of the hospital. Second, the demand side includes 3 components: patients' observable characteristics, patients' non-clinical characteristics, and insurance coverage. Conclusions: A conceptual framework that can clearly describe interactions between the components that influence induced demand is a critical step in providing a scientific basis for understanding physicians' behavior, particularly in the field of health economics.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review focusing on acupuncture points information applied in experimental studies using electroacupuncture for stroke. Methods : First, we set the research question of this study to identify which acupuncture points were studied for various symptoms of post-stroke sequelae in clinical and animal experiments. For this purpose, among the records searched through EMBASE, experimental studies including acupuncture points used in electroacupuncture treatment for stroke were selected as inclusion criteria for this study. The acupoints information used in each experiment was extracted from the included studies according to the type of study design and symptoms of stroke sequelae, and quantitative analysis was performed. Results : A total of 973 studies using acupuncture treatment, of which 429 papers including electroacupuncture were analyzed. Most of the animal experiments were conducted on general conditions instead of specific symptoms of stroke, and in clinical studies, electroacupuncture studies were conducted on symptoms such as hemiplegia and spasticity, cognitive and mental problems, dysphagia, shoulder problems, and depression that occur after stroke. Acupuncture points such as GV20, ST36, LI11, and LI4 were mainly used regardless of stroke symptoms. Except for these acupuncture points, GV26, GV14, GV16, and GV24 were frequently used in animal experiments, and TE5, LI15, LI10, and LR3 were widely used in clinical studies. Conclusions : Although this study extracted and analyzed only the frequent acupuncture points in the electroacupuncture study for stroke. However, in the future, it is necessary to be able to secure the evidence for acupuncture treatment elements through comparative studies between different acupuncture points or other elements constituting electroacupuncture.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the types of imaging modalities, analytical methods for age estimation, and the age of the subjects in research on age estimation using dental radiography through a scoping review, and to investigate the overall trends in age estimation studies. Materials and Methods: A scoping review was designed according to the Arksey and O'Malley guidelines and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement. Three electronic databases were used as search sources (Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library). Studies were classified according to the three main components of the research question. "What are the imaging modalities, analytical methods, and target age in dental imaging-based age estimation studies?" Result: The final 198 studies were selected by two reviewers. The most common imaging modality used in studies was panoramic radiography (69.7%), and studies using cone-beam computed tomography have increased over time. Analytical methods for age estimation were 62.6% in studies based on tooth development and 26.3% in studies using pulp/tooth ratio. The subject age was 27.8% for children and 27.3% for adults. Studies conducted in all age groups comprised the smallest category (5.2%). Conclusion: Panoramic radiography has been the most used types of imaging modalities for age estimation, and the most common analytical method was analysis of tooth development. Most studies targeted specific ages, and very few involved all age groups. Dental age estimation studies should be carried out with appropriate consideration of the imaging modality that is analyzed, the methods that are used, and the age that is targeted.

  • Objectives : This study reviewed existing studies on clinical examination of Korean medicine to investigate the trends and gaps of existing research on clinical performance examination (CPX) or objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in Korean medicine education. Methods : We conducted a scoping review according to the five steps suggested by Arksey and O'Malley. Six databases(RISS, OASIS, KMBASE, KISS, ScienceON, and DBpia) were searched and studies published from 2012 to July 15, 2022 were considered. The subjects of the study were limited to domestic studies about OSCE or CPX conducted in Korean medicine education. Results : Among the 25 selected papers, 17 studies implemented OSCE or CPX in practice. Those studies were conducted in 8 clinical departments and 9 of them used standardized patients. All 14 survey studies reported positive answers in satisfaction, efficacy, and self-assessment. OSCE, CPX scoring items were developed by modifying existing tools or developing through expert surveys or through literature review and significant cases. Conclusions : This study is expected to be used as basic data for following studies and promote clinical examination. From now on, the colleges of Korean medicine should proceed research on large-scale students about extended subjects through various research methods to obtain objective results that can be generalized and acquire validity and reliability. In order to promote such research, it is necessary to induce cooperation from institutions related to Korean Medicine and local universities to develop modules, implement, and conduct post-evaluation.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to understand the trends and issues of health-related intervention research using Intervention Mapping over the last ten years in South Korea. Intervention Mapping is a representative planning protocol to develop theory-and-evidence-based health promotion programs. Methods: The scoping review method was undertaken, and a total of 20 studies were analyzed using Intervention Mapping six steps. Results: The Korean health-related intervention studies using Intervention Mapping showed low methodological quality. In step 1, only 7 out of 20 studies organized a planning group consisting of various stakeholders. In step 2, about half of the studies did not present a matrix, which is the core essential component of Intervention Mapping. In step 5, only 1 out of 20 studies presented program adopters and maintainers. In step 6, most studies described effect evaluation relatively, but only one study mentioned process evaluation. Conclusions: In order to develop sustainable and cost-effective programs, systematic planning using Intervention Mapping is required from the research planning stage. In addition, a concrete and realistic plan needs to be established for the development of programs and adoption, dissemination and maintenance of programs.
