  • This study investigated the perceptions of the relationship among the three acid-base models of chemistry teachers. In addition, we examined how the perception of the relationship between models affected on the interpretation of concepts in each model. To investigate teachers' perceptions and interpretations, a questionnaire and interviews were conducted for 24 chemistry teachers. As results, most of the chemistry teachers recognized the three models as cumulative extension relationships. The perceptions were related to the contents of textbooks. The perception of the relationship of these models influenced on interpretations of the models' acid-base concept. In this study, we suggested that science teachers need to be aware of diverse models' roles.

  • 'Basic Inquiry' unit was newly included in the grade 3~4 science textbook developed for 2009 revised national curriculum. The unit deals with six basic inquiry skills such as 'observation', 'measurement', 'classification', 'prediction', 'inference', and 'communication'. This study investigated elementary school teachers' perceptions on the effects of 'Basic Inquiry' unit by questionnaires (N=104 for pre-survey, N=90 for post-survey). The results showed that how the teachers have taught basic inquiry skills before this new textbook and how they perceived the educational effects of the unit after experimental teaching period in three aspects; development of basic inquiry skills, facilitating science learning in other units, and implementation of open inquiry. The reasons of positive perceptions as well as negative perceptions were analyzed and discussed with the suggestions for further study.

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate secondary science teachers' perceptions on the goals of science education, science teaching strategies, science curriculum, and STS themes to ascertain the extent to which the current science programs incorporate with STS themes. The results of this study indicated that the perceptions of science teachers did not support the view that the STS themes have become established in contemporary secondary science education. However, they showed willingness to incorporate STS themes into their science teaching. Based on these results, the implementation of STS themes in science teaching were esstimated to be valuable for Korean science education.

  • This study aimed to investigate pre-service science teachers' perceptions of significance and usefulness of evolution and genetics. To this end, 82 pre-service biology teachers and 159 non-biology science teachers answered the items to measure the perceptions of significance and usefulness of evolution and genetics. The validity and reliability were examined using Cronbach alpha, two-dimensional rating scale model Rasch analysis, and factor analysis. The finding illustrated that the test items met the benchmark to be valid and reliable test items. Second, pre-service teachers' perception of significance and usefulness of evolution was independent to that of genetics. The level of pre-service teachers' perception of significance and usefulness of evolution was lower than the level of genetics. Lastly, the levels of pre-service teachers' perceptions of significance and usefulness of evolution and genetics were not significantly different across academic years and majors (biology and non-biology). The findings of this study stressed the importance of teaching significance and usefulness of evolution and genetics in pre-service science teacher education program.

  • In this study, we investigated the current situation of implementing cooperative learning (CL) in elementary science classes and teachers' perceptions toward CL in science instructions. Participants were 138 elementary school teachers and 96 of them had experiences of implementing CL in their science classes. We developed a questionnaire on the basis of previous studies. The results indicated that many teachers did not seem to comprehend CL and some of them did not seem to distinguish CL from the traditional small group learning. The teachers who had experiences of implementing CL tended to exhibit positive perceptions toward CL than their counterpart in the effects of CL category whereas they did not show any positive evidence in the processes of CL category. The influences of teaching career and the experience of participating inservice training about CL on teachers' perceptions toward CL were not clear. Educational implications are discussed.

  • This study examined 39 elementary teachers' perceptions on the frontier science teaching and their teaching efficacy. The results showed: elementary teachers were interested in and were well aware of the importance of the frontier science in human life and in this society. They also agreed with the necessity of teaching frontier science in elementary school. They, however, had perceptions that frontier science may not be appropriate for the level of elementary students. Moreover, the poor educational environment may act as constraints for frontier science teaching. The change of elementary teachers' teaching efficacy(t=-13.67, p<.01) was statistically significant after their participation of developing STEAM program on frontier science and practicing its lessons.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of the students about professionalism on the elementary teachers' science teaching through network analysis of keyword. For this study, questionnaires were conducted to elementary school students. The collected data were translated by coding and data cleaning. And then analyzed by Gephi 0.9.2 program as a tool of the network analysis. The results of this study were as follows: Top 5 words in betweenness centrality were 'smart, experiment, fun, various, and student understanding'. There was some difference of perceptions of students according to personal backgrounds(gender, grade and interest toward science class). Based on the result of this study, implications to improve elementary teachers' science teaching professionalism were suggested.

  • Teachers play key roles in classroom instruction. The perceptions and orientations of teachers about teaching have substantial effect on the practical context of science teaching. Analyzing science teacher's perceptions and orientations about Earth Systems Education (ESE) offers an opportunity to figure out how the goals of ESE might be dealt with. In this study, lesson plans developed by and in-depth interview results with two teachers were analyzed in terms of ESE perceptions. ESE orientations were also investigated in terms of teaching orientations and integration orientations. Research results showed that the teacher's deep understandings about 'Global Scientific Literacy (GSL)', the ultimate goal of ESE, precede the sound ESE teaching in the classroom. To enhance teachers' GSL, exemplary aspects of various integration, including networked integration, should be provided specifically to teachers. Also, the institutionalized approaches to developing ESE curriculum could help classroom teachers activate ESE teaching in their classroom.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate middle school students' and teachers' perception of psychological learning environments as well as the differences between them. This study sampled 503 middle school students and the 16 teachers who taught them. 'Psychological Learning Environment Instrument by Science Teacher' was implemented to collect data. Frequency analysis and descriptive statistics, as well as t-test, ANOVA were used for basic analysis of data. There were statistically meaningful differences in students' perception of psychological learning environments by gender, science achievement, science preference and self-efficacy in science. However, there are no differences in teachers' perceptions of psychological learning environments by gender, age, career year and major. The difference between teachers' and students' perception of psychological learning environments was not large, showing no statistical significance. However, teachers' perceptions of psychological learning environments was a little higher than that of students.
