Analysis of Students Use of Multimodal Representations in a Science Formative Assessment (Assessing Pupils' Progress, APP) Task in the UK

  • The purpose of this study was to examine UK students' use of multimodal representations in science. Students were asked to explain their understandings of the scientific concept and presentation of the multimodal representations in a science Assessing Pupils' Progress (APP) task. Participants of this study were fifty-four Year 7 students taught by the same teacher. Students from one class (27 students) were assigned to the experimental group, and then they received instruction encouraging the using of multimodal representations as evidences to support students' claims. One class (27 students) was assigned to the control group and they received instruction with traditional teaching methods. Both groups performed an APP task for assessment. The samples of APP assessments produced by students both from the experimental and control groups were analyzed using an analysis framework of multimodal representations, embeddedness in evidence and understanding of scientific concepts. Data analysis indicated that the students in the experimental group performed better than that of the control group on embeddedness of multimodal representations in the APP task. In addition, there was a significant difference between the two groups in the evaluation of understand of the scientific concepts.

On Semisimple Representations of the Framed g-loop Quiver

  • Let Q be the frame g-loop quiver, i.e. a generalized ADHM quiver obtained by replacing the two loops into g loops. The vector space M of representations of Q admits an involution ${\ast}$ if orthogonal and symplectic structures on the representation spaces are endowed. We prove equivalence between semisimplicity of representations of the ${\ast}-invariant$ subspace N of M and the orbit-closedness with respect to the natural adjoint action on N. We also explain this equivalence in terms of King's stability [8] and orthogonal decomposition of representations.

  • We construct the Fock space representations of classical quantum affine algebras using combinatorics of Young walls. We also show that the crystal graphs of the Fock space representations can be realized as the crystal consisting of proper Young walls. Finally, we give a generalized version of Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon algorithm for computing the global bases of the basic representations of classical quantum affine algebras.

  • The purpose of this paper was to examine early numerical representations between American and Korean children. Fifty-five first graders (35 Korean and 20 American) participated in the study. According to the findings of the current study, the author concluded that the Korean children had a stronger conception of base ten representations of numbers than that of the American children. The Korean children used various strategic reasoning such as decomposition and recomposition on the basis of base 10 structure to solve addition and subtraction problems effectively. However, the author cannot conclude that language differences would be the largest factor that would make Korean children sapient in the representations of base ten structures.

  • This paper is concerned with applications of representations of the Lie group of class $D_4$ to PDE. A realization of all irreducible finite-dimensional representations of $D_4$ is found and their application to a study of solutions of some systems of partial differential equations is given.

  • Throughout this paper, we denote that R is a near-ring and G an R-group. We initiate the study of R-substructures of G, representations of R on G, monogenic R-groups, faithful R-groups and faithful D.G. representations of near-rings. Next, we investigate some properties of monogenic near-ring groups, faithful monogenic near-ring groups, monogenic and faithful D.G. representations in near-rings.

  • Currently the amount and variety of data being generated is unprecedented and dramatically changes the way individuals, groups, and societies act and make decisions. Visualization is one of the most important commonly used methods of analyzing and interpreting digital assets and the interactive environments are necessary to enable effective discovery and decision making. In this paper we present several examples and approaches to scalable functional representations and interactive visualization and analysis. The functional representations provide us unified, compact, continuous, multi-scale, and compressed representations in the data domain.

  • 수학 문제를 해결하는 과정에서 시각적 표현을 적절히 활용하면 문제의 의미를 보다 확실히 이해할 수 있고 궁극적으로 문제를 해결할 가능성을 높인다. 본 연구는 6학년 학생들을 대상으로 수학 문제를 해결할 때 시각적 표현을 얼마나 사용하는지, 어떤 유형을 어떻게 활용하는지, 그리고 이런 시각적 표현의 사용 및 유형과 문제해결과의 관계는 어떠한지 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 많은 학생들이 시각적 표현보다는 수식을 사용하는 경우가 많았던 반면에, 시각적 표현을 사용한 경우가 그렇지 않은 경우보다 성공률이 높게 나타났다. 시각적 표현 중에서도 도식 표현을 사용한 학생들이 성공적인 문제 해결에 도달할 수 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 본 논문은 수학 문제 해결에서의 시각적 표현의 중요성과 그에 대한 지도 방향에 시사점을 제공한다.

  • We consider the C\ulcorner-algebra O\ulcorner generated by infinite isometries \ulcorner,\ulcorner, …on Hilbert spaces with the property \ulcorner \ulcorner$\leq$1 for every n$\in$N. We present certain type of representations of C\ulcorner-algerbra O\ulcorner on a separable Hilbert space and study the conditions for irreducibility of these representations.
