  • A novel voltage-fed single-stage power factor correction (PFC) full-bridge converter based on asymmetric phase-shifted control for battery chargers is proposed in this paper. The attractive feature of the proposed converter is that it can operate in a wide output voltage range without an output low-frequency ripple, which is indispensable in battery charger applications. Meanwhile, the converter can maintain a high power factor and a controllable dc bus voltage over a wide output voltage range. In this paper, the realization of PFC and the operation principle of asymmetric phase-shifted control are given. A small-signal analysis of the proposed single-stage power factor correction (PFC) full-bridge converter is performed. Experimental results obtained from a 1kW experimental prototype are given to validate the feasibility of the proposed converter. The PF is higher than 0.97 over the entire output voltage range with the proposed control strategy.

  • In this paper, a systematic design of a low phase noise voltage-tuned dielectric resonator oscillator(VTDRO) using loop group delay is proposed. Designed VTDRO is closed-loop type and consists of a cascade connection of a resonator, phase shifter, and amplifier. Firstly, a reference VTDRO is fabricated and its phase noise and electrical frequency tuning range are measured. Both the phase noise and electrical frequency tuning range depend on the loop group delay. Then, a required value of loop group delay for a new VTDRO with a low phase noise can be systematically computed. In addition, its phase noise and electrical frequency tuning range can be theoretically estimated using those obtained from the measurement of the reference VTDRO. When the loop group delay increases, the phase noise decreases and the electrical frequency tuning range also decreases. The former predominantly depends on the resonator structure. Therefore we propose a systematic design procedure of a resonator with high group delay characteristics. The measured loop group delay of the new VTDRO is about 700 nsec. The measured phase noise of the new VTDRO show a state-of-the-art performance of 154.5 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz frequency offset and electrical frequency tuning range of 448 kHz for a voltage change of 0~10V. The oscillation power is about 4.39 dBm.

  • In this paper, we discuss hardware design and deployment issues in current passive UHF RFID systems. Using the link budget concept, the methodology to calculate forward- and reverse-link interrogation range is shown. Then, we consider hardware issues: phase diversity, phase noise with range correlation, and TX leakage problems. Finally, three interference problems when deploying RFID systems are presented.

  • This work presents a high efficiency phase shifted full bridge (PSFB) DC-DC converter for use in the second stage of a battery charger for neighborhood electrical vehicle (EV) applications. In the design of the converter, Lithium-ion battery cells are preferred due to their high voltage and current rates, which provide a high power density. This requires wide range output voltage regulation for PSFB converter operation. In addition, the battery charger works with a light load when the battery charge voltage reaches its maximum value. The soft switching of the PSFB converter depends on the dead time optimization and load condition. As a result, the converter has to work with soft switching at a wide range output voltage and under light conditions to reach high efficiency. The operation principles of the PSFB converter for the continuous current mode (CCM) and the discontinuous current mode (DCM) are defined. The performance of the PSFB converter is analyzed in detail based on wide range output voltage and load conditions in terms of high efficiency. In order to validate performance analysis, a prototype is built with 42-54 V / 15 A output values at a 200 kHz switching frequency. The measured maximum efficiency values are obtained as 94.4% and 76.6% at full and at 2% load conditions, respectively.

  • In inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging, An ISAR autofocusing algorithm is essential to obtain well-focused ISAR images. Traditional methods have relied on the approximation that the phase error due to target motion is a function of the cross-range dimension only. However, in the stepped-frequency radar system, it tends to become a two-dimensional function of both down-range and cross-range, especially when target's movement is very fast and the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is low. In order to remove the phase error along down-range, this paper proposes a method called SAEM (subarray averaging and entropy minimization) [1] that uses a subarray averaging concept in conjunction with the entropy cost function in order to find target motion parameters, and a novel 2-D optimization technique with the inherent properties of the proposed entropy-based cost function. A well-focused ISAR image can be obtained from the combination of the proposed method and a traditional autofocus algorithm that removes the phase error along the cross-range dimension. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated and analyzed with simulated targets comprised of point scatters.

  • Gain and phase margins of a first order plus delayed time (FOPDT) process controlled by generalized predictive controller (GPC) are related to the control parameters ${\lambda}$ (control move suppression parameter) and ${\alpha}$ (smoothing filter coefficient) and the normalized delay of the process. Variation ranges of gain and phase margins are determined. It is shown that the margins cannot be assigned independently for a wide range of variation and the range is narrowing by increase of the normalized delay of the process. And finally curves are given to use for adjustment of the controller parameters in order to obtain a specific pair of gain and phase margins.

  • The phase frequency detector (PFD) is one of the most important building blocks of a phase locked Loop (PLL). Due to blind-zone problem, the detection range of the PFD is low. The blind zone of a PFD directly depends upon the reset time of the PFD and the pre-charge time of the internal nodes of the PFD. Taking these two parameters into consideration, a PFD is designed to achieve a small blind zone closer to the limit imposed by process-voltage-temperature variations. In this paper an enhanced architecture is proposed for dynamic logic PFD to minimize the blind-zone problem. The techniques used are inverter sizing, transistor reordering and use of pre-charge transistors. The PFD is implemented in 180 nm technology with supply voltage of 1.8 V.

  • The correct estimation of the ionospheric delays is very important for the precise kinematic positioning especially in case of the long baseline. In case of triple frequency system, the ionospheric delays can be estimated from the measurements, but, in case of dual frequency system, the situation is not so simple. The precision of those supplied by the external information source such as IONEX is not sufficient. The high frequency component is neglected, and the precision of the low frequency component is not sufficient for the long baseline positioning. On the other hand, the high frequency component can be estimated from the phase range measurements. If the low frequency components are estimated by using the external information source or pseudo range measurements, a more reasonable estimation of the ionospheric delays may be possible. It has already been discussed by the author that the estimation of the low frequency components by using the external information source is not sufficient but fairly effective. The estimation using the pseudo range measurements is discussed in the present paper. The accuracy is not sufficient at present because of the errors in the pseudo range measurements. It is clarified that the bias errors in the pseudo range measurements are responsible for the poor accuracy of the ionospheric delays. However, if the accuracy of the pseudo range measurements is improved in future, the method would become very promising.

  • In this Paper new results relating to the acquisition behavior of a class of first-and secondorder digital phase-locked loops (DPLL) originally proposed by Reddy and Cupta are presented in the absence of noise. It has been found that the number of quantization levels L and the number of phase error states N play important roles in acquisition. For a given L-level quantizer, as N increases, the acquisition time increases, and the lock range decreases. However, the deviation of the steady state phase error decreases in this case. When L increases, the acquisition time decreases, and the lock range increases. However, variation of L affects little for the steady state phase error. In addition, the effects of a loop filter on acquisition have also been considered. One can get smaller acquisition time and larger lock range as the filter parameter value becomes larger. However, deviation of the steady state phase error increases in that case. Analytical results have been verified by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, the six-port phase correlator using $90^{\circ}$ hybrid branch-line coupler and three-arm branch $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler were designed. The performances for two six-port phase correlators were analyzed by using ADS2003A tool. Three-arm six-port phase collerator provides more wide dynamic frequency range than that of six-port using the conventional hybrid coupler in range of circa five times. Six-port phase correlators were fabricated to evaluate the performance of two six-port phase correlators. The measured performances for two six-port phase correlators show the good accordance with the simulation data.
