  • Data were collected from 310 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and parents by questionnaires and analyzed by t-test and multiple regression analysis. The higher parents attachment and parents monitoring, the higher prosocial behavior towards parents and siblings, the higher perspective-taking, the higher prosocial behavior towards parents, and the higher socioeconomic status, the higher prosocial behavior towards siblings. More prosocial behavior toward parents was reported by girls than by boys. Prosocial behavior toward siblings did not show a gender difference. In the total group, high parent attachment and perspective-taking predicted prosocial behavior towards parents; high parent attachment and socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. In the boy group, high parent attachment and perspective-taking predicted prosocial behavior towards parents; high socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. In the girl group, high parent attachment predicted prosocial behavior towards parents and high parent attachment and socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. Discussion focused on the relative importance of parents attachment, perspective-taking, and socioeconomic status in predicting early adolescents' prosocial behavior.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify relative effects of emotion and empathy on altruistic behavior. A survey including psychological well-being, depression, empathic concern, and perspective taking was conducted on 329 undergraduates. Results revealed that altruism was positively correlated with psychological well-being, empathy concern, and perspective taking but negatively correlated with depression. Test for relative effects of positive and negative emotional states on altruism revealed that psychological well-being, but not depression, significantly predicted altruism. Test for relative effects of emotional and cognitive empathy factors on altruism showed that empathic concern, but not perspective taking, significantly predicted altruism. Test for relative effects of all four factors on altruism revealed that the empathic concern was the strongest factor affecting altruism, followed by psychological well-being, while the remaining two factors did not have an effect on altruism. Implications and limitations of this study are also discussed in this study.

  • The current paper not only investigates the intermediating process of the association between servant leadership and safety behavior, but also tries to find a factor which enhances the positive influence of servant leadership. To do that, this study tried to identify the mediating effect of employee's psychological safety between servant leadership and safety behavior, as well as the moderating influence of perspective taking ability in the servant leadership-psychological safety link. By utilizing 3 wave survey data from 235 employees in Korean companies with conducting structural equation modeling(SEM), this paper found that servant leadership had a positive influence on safety behavior through mediating effect of employee's psychological safety. In addition, the perspective taking ability positively moderated the positive impact of servant leadership on psychological safety.

  • Background: To explore the empathic abilities, communication competence, and attitudes toward the disabled, and to identify the relationship between these variables among female dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 190 female students in their second and third year of study at the dental hygiene department of a university located in Gyeongsangnam-do province, South Korea, from September 2-11, 2020. Data were analyzed using descriptive analyses, t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression using SPSS 20.0. Results: The participants' scores for empathic abilities, communication competence, and attitudes toward the disabled were 3.63, 3.69, and 3.54 points, respectively. A significant positive correlation was observed between empathic abilities and attitudes toward the disabled. Regarding the sub-elements of empathic abilities, the participants' attitudes toward the disabled had a significant positive correlation with the scales measuring their perspective-taking abilities and personal distress (p<.05). A positive correlation (p<.05) was observed between communication competence and attitudes toward the disabled. The students' attitudes toward the disabled were significantly influenced by the scale measuring their perspective-taking abilities (B=.210); those with a higher perspective-taking ability displayed more positive attitudes toward the disabled. Conclusion: Female dental hygiene students showed empathic abilities, which positively influenced their attitudes toward the disabled. Positive attitudes toward the disabled can contribute to improving the quality of medical services.

Data collection was conducted from October to November 2018. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple stepwise regression via SPSS WIN 25.0. Results: The mean scores for empathy, gratitude, positive affect, negative affect, and spirituality were all average. However, there were significant differences in mean scores for spirituality according to satisfaction with major (F=5.88, p=.003), study grade (F=10.17, p<.001). Spirituality was found to be correlated with fantasy (r=.17, p<.001), empathic concern (r=.41, p<.001), perspective taking (r=.42, p<.001), personal distress (r=-.31, p<.001), gratitude (r=.65, p<.001), positive affect (r=.52, p<.001), and negative affect (r=-.30, p<.001). Significant predictors of spirituality included gratitude (${\beta}=.38$, p<.001), study grade (${\beta}=.34$, p=.009), positive affect (${\beta}=.29$, p<.001), and perspective taking (${\beta}=.16$, p=0.37), one of the sub-dimensions of empathy. Conclusion: To improve spirituality among nursing students, nursing educators should develop educational intervention programs to promote gratitude, study grades, positive affect, and perspective taking.

On the Interpretation of English Sentential Adverbials in Interrogatives: Adverbials Which Introduce Evidentiality and Other Adverbials (영어 문장부사의 의문문에서의 의미 해석: 증거성을 도입하는 부사를 중심으로)

  • Some sentential adverbials in English, especially those which introduce evidentiality (hereafter evidential adverbials), such as apparently, purportedly, reportedly, and allegedly, exhibit what we call 'the perspective shift' in interrogatives: they are interpreted from the speaker's perspective in declaratives, but are interpreted from the addressee's perspective in interrogatives. To account for this phenomenon, we argue that English evidential adverbials are functions taking a proposition as its argument and returns a character in the sense of Kaplan (1989). We further show that, with this assumption, the perspective shift of evidential adverbials in interrogatives can be explained within the rather standard semantics of interrogatives (Hamblin 1973, among others) and of indexicals (Kaplan 1989).

  • This study investigated the effects on task performance of dyad collaboration based on young children's cognitive and social ability. The 108 5-year-old subjects were assigned to a collaborative experimental group, a comparison group working individually in sorting, writing, and making a puzzle, or a control group. Data from before and after measurements on sorting and perspective taking tasks were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA. Results showed that (1) Children working in dyad collaboration obtained significantly more improvement in their performance on both tasks than those working individually. (2) Dyads composed of a child with high level social skill but low level intelligence and a child with low levels of both showed most improvement in performance on the perspective taking task.
