Most engineering design problems require analyses or simulations to evaluate objective functions. However, a single simulation can take many hours or even days to finish for many real world problems. As a result, design optimization becomes impossible since they require hundreds or thousands of simulation evaluations. The surrogate-based optimization (SBO) strategy became a remedy for such computationally expensive analyses and simulations. A surrogate-based optimization strategy has been developed in this study in order to improve global optimization performance. The strategy is a heuristic algorithm and it exploits not only multiple surrogates, but also multiple optimizers. Multiple optimizations of multiple surrogate models yield multiple candidate design points of optima. During the sequential sampling process, the algorithm ranks candidate design points, selects the points as many as specified, and builds the improved surrogate model. Various mathematical functions with different numbers of design variables are chosen to compare the proposed method with the other most recent algorithm, MSEGO. The proposed method shows superior performance to the other method.

When mobile navigator device accesses data randomly, the cache memory performance is rapidly deteriorated due to low memory access locality. For instance, GPS (General Positioning System) of navigator program for automobiles or drones, that are currently in common use, uses data from 32 satellites and computes current position of a receiver. This computation of positioning is the major part of GPS which accounts more than 50% computation in the program. In this computation task, the satellite signals are received in real time and stored in buffer memories. At this task, since necessary data cannot be sequentially stored, the data is read and used at random. This data accessing patterns are generated randomly, thus, memory system performance is worse by low data locality. As a result, it is difficult to process data in real time due to low data localization. Improving the low memory access locality inherited on the algorithms of conventional communication applications requires a certain optimization technique to solve this problem. In this study, we try to do optimizations with data and memory to improve the locality problem. In experiment, we show that our case study can improve processing speed of core computation and improve our overall system performance by 14%.

Shape optimization of airfoil in WIG craft has been performed by considering the ground effect. The WIG craft should satisfy various aerodynamic characteristics such as lift, lift to drag ratio, and static height stability. However, they show a strong trade-off phenomenon so that it is difficult to satisfy aerodynamic properties simultaneously. Optimization is carried out through the multi-objective genetic algorithm. A multi-objective optimization means that each objective is considered separately instead of weighting. Due to the trade-off, pareto sets and non-dominated solutions can be obtained instead of the unique solution. NACA0015 airfoil is considered as a baseline model, shapes of airfoil are parameterized and rebuilt with four-Bezier curves. There are eighteen design variables and three objective functions. The range of design variables and their resolutions are two primary keys for the successful optimization. By two preliminary optimizations, the variation can be reduced effectively. After thirty evolutions, the non-dominated pareto individuals of twenty seven are obtained. Pareto sets are all the set of possible and excellent solution across the design space. At any selections of the pareto set, these are no better solutions in all design space.

This paper investigates the energy efficiency of energy harvesting (EH) bidirectional cooperative sensor networks, in which the considered system model enables the uplink information transmission from the sensor (SN) to access point (AP) and the energy supply for the amplify-and-forward (AF) relay and SN using power-splitting (PS) or time-switching (TS) protocol. Considering the minimum EH activation constraint and quality of service (QoS) requirement, energy efficiency is maximized by jointly optimizing the resource division ratio and transmission power. To cope with the non-convexity of the optimizations, we propose the low complexity iterative algorithm based on fractional programming and alternative search method (FAS). The key idea of the proposed algorithm first transforms the objective function into the parameterized polynomial subtractive form. Then we decompose the optimization into two convex sub-problems, which can be solved by conventional convex programming. Simulation results validate that the proposed schemes have better output performance and the iterative algorithm has a fast convergence rate.
The energy absorption characteristics of diamond core sandwich cylindrical columns under axial crushing process depend greatly on the amount of material which participates in the plastic deformation. Both the single-objective and multi-objective optimizations are performed for columns under axial crushing load with core thickness and helix pitch of the honeycomb core as design variables. Models are optimized by multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm to achieve maximum specific energy absorption (SEA) capacity and minimum peak crushing force (PCF). Results show that optimization improves the energy absorption characteristics with constrained and unconstrained peak crashing load. Also, it is concluded that the aluminum tube has a better energy absorption capability rather than steel tube at a certain peak crushing force. The results justify that the interaction effects between the honeycomb and column walls greatly improve the energy absorption efficiency. A ranking technique for order preference (TOPSIS) is then used to sort the non-dominated solutions by the preference of decision makers. That is, a multi-criteria decision which consists of MOPSO and TOPSIS is presented to find out a compromise solution for decision makers. Furthermore, local and global sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the effect of design variable values on the SEA and PCF functions in design domain. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, it is concluded that for both models, the helix pitch of the honeycomb core has greater effect on the sensitivity of SEA, while, the core thickness has greater effect on the sensitivity of PCF.

In the present study, a numerical model for probability analysis of optimal design of fatigue non-uniform crack growth behaviour of a cracked aluminium 2024 T3 plate repaired with a bonded composite patch is investigated. The proposed 3D numerical model has advanced in literatures, which gathers in a unique study: problems of reliability, optimization, fatigue, cracks and repair of plates subjected to tensile loadings. To achieve this aim, a finite element modelling is carried out to determine the evolution of the stress intensity factor at the crack tip Paris law is used to predict the fatigue life for a give n crack. To have an optimal volume of our patch satisfied the practical fatigue life, a procedure of optimization is proposed. Finally, the probabilistic analysis is performed in order to a show that optimized patch design is influenced by uncertainties related to mechanical and geometrical properties during the manufacturing process.

In this Paper. a time-domain geoacoustic inversion was performed using the bulb signals measured during MがU. 04 experiment conducted in the East Sea of Korea in 2004. An obiective function was defined as a direct cross-correlation between the measured and the simulated signals in time domain. The ray theory was used to model the wave propagation in time domain and optimizations were Performed using VFSA (very fast simulated annealing) algorithm. Comparison of inversion results with those from transmission loss matching (an accompanying paper in this issue of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of Korea) shows that Parameters are consistently inverted. Direct time series comparisons between the measured signals and the simulated signals are Presented based on inversion results.
Ship design process requires lots of complicated analyses for determining a large number of design variables. Due to its complexity, the process is divided into several tractable designs or analysis problems. The interdependent relationship requires repetitive works. This paper employs collaborative optimization (CO), one of the multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) techniques, for treating such complex relationship. CO guarantees disciplinary autonomy while maintaining interdisciplinary compatibility due to its bi-level optimization structure. However, the considerably increased computational time and the slow convergence have been reported as its drawbacks. This paper proposes the use of an approximation model in place of the disciplinary optimization in the system-level optimization. Neural network classification is employed as a classifier to determine whether a design point is feasible or not. Kriging is also combined with the classification to make up for the weakness that the classification cannot estimate the degree of infeasibility. For the purpose of enhancing the accuracy of a predicted optimum and reducing the required number of disciplinary optimizations, an approximation management framework is also employed in the system-level optimization.

Contemporary objectives for steel rod rolling processing are increasingly complex and often contrasting i.e. obtaining a desired product with optimum combination of properties such as strength, toughness and formability at lower cost. Low-alloy steel rods have been produced with several heat treatments for drawing and forging processes at room temperature. In order to reduce these heat treatments much of the researches concerning of high temperature mechanical behavior of steel rods have been conducted at wire rod mill of POSCO. In this present work, optimizations of rolling temperature and cooling rate for JS-SCM435 are performed to eliminate softening heat treatment(Low Temperature Annealing) for drawing process. The results from the optimization changed the microstructure of rods after rod rolling from Bainite with high tensile strength of 1000Mpa to Pearlite and Ferrite with appropriate strength of 750Mpa that is equivalent tensile strength after softening heat treatment.

This research investigated the influence on the 4 cell of DC discharge on the side of the discharge characteristic. This DC discharge cells are that composes AND gate of AND gate PDP newly proposed. As for the discharge starting voltage of this discharge cell of 4 pieces, it has been understood that there is deeply a relation up to the space charge generated from the discharge of adjoining discharge cell through the experiment. The discharge voltages which had become each discharge cell optimizations from the experiment result were decided. Moreover, the width of the margin of two AND input voltages is wide and the AND function occurs clearly. However, it has been qualitatively understood that it is difficult enough to obtain the operation margin of the DC priming discharge used to address discharge of PDP.
