Variables Associated with Children's Leadership Qualities (취학전 남아와 여아의 리더십에 영향을 미치는 변인 : 기질, 또래상호작용, 어머니의 언어통제유형, 가정환경을 중심으로)

  • This study analyzed variables that affect children's leadership qualities. The subjects were 400 five-year-old children and their mothers living in the Seoul metropolitan area. The instruments used in this study were the Young Children's Leadership Scale (Kim, 2006), Temperament(Hong, 2008), Peer Interaction (Choi, 2004), Mother's Verbal Control Modes(Do, 1997), and the HOME instrument (Rhee and Jang, 1982). The data collected was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Our results indicated that (a) girls' scores on leadership were higher than those of boys. (b) Boys' leadership qualities were related to children's temperament, peer relationship, maternal verbal control modes, and home environment. (c) Girls' leadership qualities were related to children's temperament, peer relationship, and home environment. (d) In particular, it was noted that children's temperament (in terms of their sensitivity/endurance) was the strongest predictor for leadership qualities in both boys and girls.

A Study on Value Orientations and Transmissions between Parents and College-aged Children (부모와 대학생 자녀의 가치관과 가치전달 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate educational and occupational value orientations and transmissions between parents and college-aged children. The specific objectives are as follows; 1. To investigate parents and children's value orientations. 2. To estimate value congruence and transmissions between parents and children. 3. To find out the effects of three kinds of variables (demographic, family life, and expectation) on children's value orientations. To study the generational congruences and transmissions, four kinds of questionnarie and matched samples of mother-daughter and father-son were used. The data were obtained through 110 pairs and analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. The resluts are summerized as follows; 1. Significant value differences are found between parents group and children group. 2. Mother-daughter congruences are more than father-son congruences, but the correlation coefficients are low. 3. The variables selectively influence on children's value orientations.

The Effects of Whole Language Program Using Story Books on Hearing Impaired Children's Language Abilities and Story Structures Concepts (동화를 사용한 총체적 언어접근이 청각장애 아동의 언어능력과 이야기 구조화 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of whole language approach on the development of language abilities and story structure concepts for hearing impaired children. For this end, two research questions have been established. First, what is the effect of whole language program using story books on hearing impaired children’s language abilities? Second, what is the effect of whole language program using story books on hearing impaired children's story structure concept? Three subjects participated in the study. Each subject was scheduled for a 40-minute session two times a week. Subjects received 36 sessions of use animation activities for 3 months. The study used a multiple baseline across the subjects. The followings were the findings of this study. First, the whole language program using story books improved hearing impaired children's language abilities. Second, the whole language program using story books improved hearing impaired children's story structure concept.

Relationships Between Children's Impulsivity, Sociodramatic Play and Children's self-regulation (유아의 충동성 기질 및 사회극놀이 참여도와 자기규제간의 관계)

  • This study examined the relations between children's Impulsivity temperament, socio-dramatic play, and self-regulation of 4-year-old children. Subjects were 117 4-year-old children(59 boys and 58 girls) selected from three kindergartens. Each mother completed a questionnaire on her child's temperament. Naturalistic observations of total socio-dramatic play, complex socio-dramatic play, solitary dramatic play and of self-regulation in two classroom contexts - clean-up periods and group circle time - were conducted for obtaining data. Significance was analyzed by Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis. Children's Impulsivity was negatively related to self-regulation and to total and complex socio-dramatic play, but impulsivity was positively related to solitary dramatic play. Total and complex socio-dramatic play was positively related to self-regulation while solitary dramatic play was negatively related to self-regulation. Total and complex socio-dramatic play, and solitary dramatic play displayed a mediating role between impulsivity and self-regulation during clean-up periods.

The Effect of Mothers' Depression on Preschool Children's Development: Focusing on the Mediation of Home Environment (어머니의 우울이 유아의 발달에 미치는 영향: 가정환경의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships among mothers' depression, home environment, and preschool children's development. The participants in this study were 199 parents of 3- to 5-year-old children. Statistical methods used for the data analysis were the frequencies, means, standard deviations, Pearson correlation, simple and multiple regression. The major findings were as follows. First, mothers' depression had a negative influence on home environment. Second, mothers' depression had a negative influence on children's development. Last, the effect of mothers' depression on children's development was partially mediated by home environment. The results suggest that mothers' depression and home environment may predict children's development.

Factors related to Young Children′s Empathy (유아의 공감에 관련된 변인 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify how characteristics of young children (sex, age, temperament), mothers (employed or unemployed, intimacy between mother and child, parenting attitudes), and home environment (pet, TV/Video viewing) relate to young children's empathy and to examine the relative effects of then variables on young children's empathy. The subjects for this study were 300 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds selected from kindergartens and day-care centers in Busan. Data were analyzed via t-test, correlation, and multiple regression. Results showed that girls had higher empathy score than boys. Young children's empathy was positively correlated with the sociability of young child's temperament, intimacy between mother and young child, reasoning guidance, affect, achievement of parenting attitudes, and parental intervention toward young child after TV/video viewing. However, young children's empathy was correlated negatively with authoritarian control of parenting attitudes. Among then variables, young children's sex was the most significant variable.

A Study on Influences of Parental Science Attitudes and Trust Perceived by Children on Their Science Self-Efficacy (아동이 지각한 부모의 과학태도와 신뢰도가 아동의 과학 자기효능감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to explore influences of parental science attitudes and trust perceived by children on their science self-efficacy. In oder to accomplish this purpose, a quantitative research was carried out for elementary gifted and general students using correlation and multiple linear regression analysis. The results were as follows. Firstly, children's science self-efficacy was positively correlated with parental science attitudes and trust perceived by both gifted and general children. Secondly, in the case of gifted children, their science self-efficacy was meaningfully affected by mother's trust, mother's science attitudes, and father's science attitudes perceived by them in that order. On the order hand, general children's science self-efficacy meaningfully affected by mother's trust and mother's science attitudes perceived by them.

Relationship between Mother-Child Communication and the Self-Concept of Young Children (어머니-유아 의사소통과 유아의 자아개념과의 관계)

  • This study analyzed the relationship between mother-child communication and the self-concept of young children. The subjects were 93 three-, four-, and five-year-old kindergarten children and their mothers in the city of Chunju. The self-concept test, mother-child communication inventory for children and the mother-child communication questionnaire for mothers were used. The data were analyzed by T-test, General Linear Models analysis, Duncan's Multiple Range test, Paired T-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The major findings were that (1) the children perceived mother-child communication more intensively than mothers, (2) the more positive communication the children perceived they had with their mothers, the higher their self-concept, (3) the self-concept of 5-year-olds was more highly correlated with perception about mother-child communication than the self-concept of the younger children, and (4) boys' self-concept was more highly correlated with perceived mother-child communication than girls'.

Ego-Identity of School-Aged Children: Effects of Level of Income and Perceived Parental Behaviors (가정의 소득수준과 지각된 부모의 양육행동 및 학령기 아동의 자아정체감간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study win to examine the relation between level of income, perceived parental behaviors, and ego-identity of school-aged children. The subjects were 356 children in the 6th grade selected from six elementary schools in Seoul and Keunggi-Do. The subjects were asked to complete the questionnaire on ego-identity and perceived parental behaviors. The data was analyzed by Mean, SD, Cronbach's α, Pearson's correlation and Multiple Regression. The major findings were as follows : 1. The level of income(antecedent variable) was significantly related with perceived parental behavior(mediator) and ego-identity of school-aged children(dependent variable). 2. The effects of level of income on ego-identity of school-aged children became lower after control of the effects of perceived parental behaviors. In other words, perceived parental behaviors partially mediated the effects of level of income on ego-identity of school-aged children.

The Effects of Behavioral Characteristics and Maternal Variables on Children's Maladjustment Capacity (유아의 교육기관 부적응행동에 대한 유아 및 어머니 변인간의 상호작용 효과에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the personal traits of children's characteristics as well as those of mothers' on the children's maladjustment behaviors. The study subjects were 345 preschooler-mother pairs. Results revealed that boys exhibited more maladjustment behaviors than girls, as expected. The results of a three way ANOVA analyses indicated that the multiple interactive factors of the children's temperament, cognitive outcomes, and parenting attitudes significantly affected the children's maladjustment behaviors. This trend was only representative across the sample of boys. In this study, the interaction effects of negative parenting attitudes and the children's lower levels of cognitive development on the children's maladjustment capacity were accentuated among boys with temperamental vulnerability.
