Mechanical properties of a composite mixed by components with known material properties are numerically predicted at various volume fractions rather than investigated through experiments. The properties, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio, are estimated by minimizing the error between the static displacements computed from a model for the composite and those computed from a model of homogeneous and isotropic material. A finite element model for a composite is proposed to distribute different types of material components easily into the model depending on the volume fraction. Mechanical properties of a composite filled with solid mircospheres are predicted numerically through a sample study and the estimated results are compared with experimental results and some theories.
The present study deals with the repair of composite structures by bonding composite patches. The composite structure is a carbon/epoxy laminate with stacking sequence [45/-45/0/90]S. The damaged zone is simulated by a central crack and repaired by bonding symmetrical composite patches. The repair is carried out using composite patches laminated from the same elemental folds as those of the cracked specimen. Three-dimensional finite element method is used to determine the energy release rate along the front of repaired crack. The effects of the repair technique used single or double patch, the stacking sequence of the cracked composite patch and the adhesive properties were highlighted on the variations of the fracture energy in mode I and mixed mode I + II loading.

An alternative approach for topology optimization of steady incompressible Navier-Stokes flow problems is presented by using P1 nonconforming finite elements. This study is the extended research of the earlier application of P1 nonconforming elements to topology optimization of Stokes problems. The advantages of the P1 nonconforming elements for topology optimization of incompressible materials based on locking-free property and linear shape functions are investigated if they are also valid in fluid equations with the inertia term. Compared with a mixed finite element formulation, the number of degrees of freedom of P1 nonconforming elements is reduced by using the discrete divergence-free property; the continuity equation of incompressible flow can be imposed by using the penalty method into the momentum equation. The effect of penalty parameters on the solution accuracy and proper bounds will be investigated. While nodes of most quadrilateral nonconforming elements are located at the midpoints of element edges and higher order shape functions are used, the present P1 nonconforming elements have P1, {1, x, y}, shape functions and vertex-wisely defined degrees of freedom. So its implentation is as simple as in the standard bilinear conforming elements. The effectiveness of the proposed formulation is verified by showing examples with various Reynolds numbers.

The $J_{k}$ integral method for determining mixed mode stress intensity factors separately in the cracked anisotropic plate is developed. Stress intensity factors are indirectly determined from the values of $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$. The $J_{2}$ integral can be evaluated efficiently from a finite element solution, neglecting the contribution from the portion of the integration contour along the crack faces, by selecting the integration contour in the vicinity of the crack tip. Using functions of a complex variable, the complete relations between $J_{1}$, $J_{2}$ and $K_{I}$ , $K_{II}$ for anisotropic materials are derived conveniently by selecting narrow rectangular contours shrinking to the crack tip. Compared to the existing path independent integral methods, the present method does not involve calculating the auxiliary solution and hence numerical procedures become quite simple. Numerical results to various problems are given and demonstrate the accuracy, stability and versatility of the method.

A Mixed Volume and Boundary Integral Equation Method is applied for the effective analysis of elastic wave scattering problems and plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions. It should be noted that this newly developed numerical method does not require the Green's function for anisotropic inclusions to solve this class of problems since only Green's function for the unbounded isotropic matrix is involved in their formulation for the analysis. This new method can also be applied to general two-dimensional elastodynamic and elastostatic problems with arbitrary shapes and number of anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions. In the formulation of this method, the continuity condition at each interface is automatically satisfied, and in contrast to finite element methods, where the full domain needs to be discretized, this method requires discretization of the inclusions only. Finally, this method takes full advantage of the pre- and post-processing capabilities developed in FEM and BIEM. Through the analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with orthotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions, and the analysis of plane wave scattering problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with isotropic inclusions and voids, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane wave scattering problems and plane elastic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids/cracks or isotropic inclusions.

Recent investigation into the integrity of nuclear containment buildings has highlighted the importance of developing an elaborate diagnostic method to evaluate the distribution and size of cavities inside concrete walls. As part of developing such a method, this paper presents a finite element approach to modeling elastic waves propagating in the containment building walls of a nuclear power plant. We introduce a perfectly matched layer (PML) wave-absorbing boundary to limit the large-scale nuclear containment wall to the region of interest. The formulation results in a semi-discrete form with symmetric damping and stiffness matrices. The transient elastic wave equations for a mixed unsplit-field PML were solved for displacement and stresses in the time domain. Numerical results show that the sensitivity of displacement, velocity, acceleration, and stresses is large depending on the size and location of the cavity. The dynamic response of the wall slightly differs depending on the existence of the containment liner plate. The results of this study can be applied to a full-waveform inversion approach for characterizing cavities inside a containment wall.

This study deals with behavior characteristics of laminated composite folded structures according to ratio of folded length based on a higher-order shear deformation theory. Well-known mixed finite element method using Lagrangian and Hermite shape interpolation functions is a little complex and have some difficulties applying to a triangular element. However, a higher-order shear deformation theory using only Lagrangian shape interpolation functions avoids those problems. In this paper, a drilling degree of freedom is appended for more accurate analysis and computational simplicity of folded plates. There are ten degrees of freedom per node, and four nodes per element. Journal on folded plates for effects of length variations is not expressed. Many results in this study are carried out according to ratio of folded length. The rational design is possible through analyses of complex and unpredictable laminated composite folded structures.

A Light Emitting Diode(LED) is a semiconductor device which converts electricity into light. LEDs are widely used in a field of illumination, LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) backlight, mobile signals because they have several merits, such as low power consumption, long lifetime, high brightness, fast response, environment friendly. In general, LEDs production does die bonding and wire bonding on board, and do silicon and phosphor dispensing to protect LED chip and improve brightness. Then lens molding process is performed using mixed liquid silicon rubber(LSR) by resin and hardener. A mixture of resin and hardener affect the optical characteristics of the LED lens. In this paper, computational design of static mixer was performed for mixing of liquid silicon. To evaluate characteristic of mixing efficiency, finite element model of static mixer was generated, and fluidic analysis was performed according to length of mixing element. Finally, optimal condition of length of mixing element was applied to static mixer from result of fluidic analysis.

An elasto-plastic finite element method using the theory of strain gradient plasticity is proposed to evaluate the size dependency of structural plasticity that occurs when the configuration size decreases to micron scale. For this method, we suggest a low-order plane and three-dimensional displacement-based elements, eliminating the need for a high order, many degrees of freedom, a mixed element, or super elements, which have been considered necessary in previous researches. The proposed method can be performed in the framework of nonlinear incremental analysis in which plastic strains are calculated and averaged at nodes. These strains are then interpolated and differentiated for gradient calculation. We adopted a strain-gradient-hardening constitutive equation from the Taylor dislocation model, which requires the plastic strain gradient. The developed finite elements are tested numerically on the basis of typical size-effect problems such as micro-bending, micro-torsion, and micro-voids. With respect to the strain gradient plasticity, i.e., the size effects, the results obtained by using the proposed method, which are simple in their calculation, are in good agreement with the experimental results cited in previously published papers.
