  • Automation of wood processing is strongly required to improve the productivity and quality of wood products in wood industry which is one of the most labor-intensive industries. Classification of surface defects on wood boards such as knots is one of the important steps towards a completely automated wood processing system. In this study the possibility of detection of knots by image processing technique was investigated. Algorithm for the automatic determination of threshold value was developed to enhance the flexibility of image processing system. Two different approaches, grid method and tile method, were developed to enhance the speed in extracting features from images. Grid method showed slightly higher processing speed and tile method proved much more stable in determining threshold values. Tile size of $5{\times}5$ pixels or $6{\times}6$ pixels was found to be proper to get stable results with resonable processing time.

  • Small area model provides reliable and accurate estimations when the sample size is not sufficient. Our dataset has an inherent nonlinear pattern which signicantly affects our inference. In this case, we could consider semiparametric models such as truncated polynomial basis function and radial basis function. In this paper, we study four Bayesian semiparametric models for small areas to handle this point. Four small area models are based on two kinds of basis function and different knots positions. To evaluate the different estimates, four comparison measurements have been employed as criteria. In these comparison measurements, the truncated polynomial basis function with equal quantile knots has shown the best result. In Bayesian calculation, we use Gibbs sampler to solve the numerical problems.

  • M. Reni has shown that there are at most nine mutually inequivalent knots in the 3-sphere whose 2-fold branched covering spaces are mutually homeomorphic, hyperbolic 3-manifolds. By observing that the Z-homology sphere version of M. Reni's result still holds, M. Mecchia and B. Zimmermann showed that there are exactly nine mutually inequivalent, knots in Z-homology 3-spheres whose 2-fold branched covering spaces are mutually homeomorphic, hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and conjectured that there exist exactly nine mutually inequivalent, knots in the true 3-sphere whose 2-fold branched covering spaces are mutually homeomorphic, hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Their proof used an argument of AID imitations published in 1992. The main result of this paper is to solve their conjecture affirmatively by combining their argument with a theory of strongly AID imitations published in 1997.

  • We consider the estimation of the regression surface in generalized linear models based on tensor-product B-splines in a data-dependent way. Our approach is to use maximum likelihood method to estimate the regression function by a function from a space of tensor-product B-splines that have a finite number of knots and are linear in the tails. The knots are placed at selected order statistics of each coordinate of the sample data. The number of knots is determined by minimizing a variant of AIC. A numerical example is used to illustrate the performance of the tensor spline estimates.

  • n-writhes denoted by Jn(K) are virtual knot invariants for n ≠ 0 and are closely associated with coefficients of some polynomial invariants of virtual knots. In this work, we investigate the variations of Jn(K) under arc shift move and conclude that n-writhes Jn(K) vary randomly in the sense that it may change by any random integer value under one arc shift move. Also, for each n ≠ 0 we provide an infinite family of virtual knots which can be distinguished by n-writhes Jn(K), whereas odd writhe J(K) fails to do so.

  • There are several problems in a fishing by the midwater pair trawl net which is used in Denmark; steeply decreasing of the net height with the towing speed increasing, the larger volume of the fishing gear in comparison with the size of the trawler, and catching of a float in a mesh, etc. To prevent steeply decreasing of the net height with the towing speed increasing and catching of a float in a mesh, it is sometimes more useful to use the kite instead of floats. This paper describes the hydrodynamic drag and the opening efficiency of the midwater pair trawl net and the midwater kite pair trawl net obtained by the model test in the circulation water channel. The results can be summarized as follows; 1. The hydrodynamic drag of the midwater kite pair trawl net is about 0.7 times smaller than that of the midwater pair trawl net. 2. The net height, mouth area and filtering volume of the midwater kite pair trawl net are smaller then those of the midwater pair trawl net when the towing speed is below 2.5knots, almost the same at 2.7knots, and are larger over 3.0knots. The net width of the midwater kite pair trawl net is same as that of the midwater pair trawl net. 3. The shapes of net mouth of both net are an oval steeply flatted with the towing speed increasing. The filtering volume of the midwater kite pair trawl net is larger then that of the midwater pair trawl net by 3% at 3.0knots, 11% at 4.0knots, and 16% at 5.0knots respectively.

  • Due to global warming it is estimated that the arctic ocean route will be avaliable and traffic will increase by approximately year 2030. However, most navigation in the arctic is based on the ice breaker captains'orders, there is no exact measurement of convoy speed and distance between ships. So, this research was conducted to find out the minimum safe separation distance and minimum breaking distance via ship controling simulations, and the results are as stated. For breaking distances, for ships that have a lead distance which is 2~4 times the width of the ship and traveling less than 7 knots, crash astern and crash astern & hard rudder showed no significant difference. But ships traveling at 10 knots there was a decrease in breaking distance of 1L, from 3.5L to 2.5L. By analyzing 10 subject ships by crash astern the breaking distance for 5 knots is 0.98L~1.8L, for 8 knots is 1.9L~4.0L. The minimum safe separation distance in narrow sea-ways is 6L, but as the arctic sea-way is only one-way 3L is required. As the result, it is found that in the arctic the safe escort speed is less than 5 knots, if the escort speed is 8knots or more and by using crash astern & hard rudder to break the safe distance should be kept at 3.4L.

  • This paper proposes a technique for analyzing mutual relation of an entangled cord by consistent labeling. Cords are often entangled unexpectedly and sometimes they even produce knots. The purpose of this study is to provide an algorithm to resolve such entangled cords automatically. It may as well have applications in future to recognizing the structure of tree branches, angiography, abdominal intestines, etc.

  • It is known that a 2-generator knot K has a cyclic Alexander module ℤ[t, t―1]/(Δ(t)) where Δ(t) is the Alexander polynomial of K. In this paper we explicitly show how to reduce 2-generator Alexander modules to cyclic ones by using Chiswell, Glass and Wilsons presentations of 2-generator knot groups $$<\;x,\;y\;{\mid}\;(x^{{\alpha}_1})^{y^{{\gamma}_1}},\;{\cdots}\;,\;(x^{{\alpha}_k})^{y^{{\gamma}_k}}\;>$$ where ab = bab-1.

  • In this paper, we discuss the crossing change operation along exchangeable double curves of a surface-knot diagram. We show that under certain condition, a finite sequence of Roseman moves preserves the property of those exchangeable double curves. As an application for this result, we also define a numerical invariant for a set of surface-knots called du-exchangeable set.
