When structures are constructed by welding, heat conduction brings welding deformation. This is accompanied by complicated mechanical phenomenon such as material nonlinear and geometric nonlinear behavior. Hitherto, the research of welding deformation has been accomplished by an analytical method and experimental data in Korea. In this paper, the computer program by F.E.M.(finite element method) which could analyze the deformation of thin plate considering phenomena(both material and geometric nonlinear behavior) has been developed and verified. The production mechanism and characteristics in the welding deformation of plate are studied by the results.

For construction and design of tunnels, groundwater flow models are used to find the influence of groundwater to the stability of tunnels considering the geological condition around the tunnels and the materials used in tunnel linings. For the analysis of tunnel flow, some commercial programs, e.g. MODFLOW, SEEP/W etc., are used. These programs have limitations that MODFLOW could not define curved surface smoothly in three dimensional flow media and SEEP/W is the 2-dimensional flow model. In this paper, the ability of a finite element program developed for analyzing 3-dimensional groundwater flow is examined. Confined steady state groundwater flow solution in non-homogeneous media is obtained using isoparametric element with eight trilinear hexahedron nodes and is compared with the result of MODFLOW. It was found that the solution yielded a good result with the three dimensional flow studied.
A detailed finite element modeling is presented for the simulation of the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete structures which manages to predict the nonlinear behavior of four different experimental setups with computational efficiency, robustness and accuracy. The proposed modeling method uses 8-node hexahedral isoparametric elements for the discretization of concrete. Steel rebars may have any orientation inside the solid concrete elements allowing the simulation of longitudinal as well as transverse reinforcement. Concrete cracking is treated with the smeared crack approach, while steel reinforcement is modeled with the natural beam-column flexibility-based element that takes into consideration shear and bending stiffness. The performance of the proposed modeling is demonstrated by comparing the numerical predictions with existing experimental and numerical results in the literature as well as with those of a commercial code. The results show that the proposed refined simulation predicts accurately the nonlinear inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete structures achieving numerical robustness and computational efficiency.
Free transverse vibration of shear deformable super-elliptical plates with uniform thickness was studied based on Mindlin plate theory using finite element method. Quadrilateral isoparametric elements were used in the paper. Sensitivity analysis was made to determine the influence of the thickness, the aspect ratio, and the shape of the plate on the natural frequency. Accuracy of the results computed in the current study was validated by comparing them with the solutions available in the literature. The results reveal that the frequencies of clamped super-elliptical plates lie in the range bounded by elliptical and rectangular plates irrespective of the aspect ratio, and furthermore, the frequency decreases if the super-elliptical power increases. A similar trend was observed for simply supported plates with high aspect ratio. The free vibration response for the first and the second symmetric-antisymmetric (SA) modes were found to be different for high aspect ratio. The results reveal that using insufficient number of degrees of freedom results in finding a totally different relation between the super-elliptical power and the frequency.
An isoparametric six-node triangular element is utilized for geometrically nonlinear analysis of functionally graded (FG) shells. To overcome the shear and membrane locking, the element is improved by using strain interpolation functions. The Total Lagrangian formulation is employed to include the large displacements and rotations. Finding the nonlinear behavior of FG shells via laminated modeling is also the goal. A power function is employed to formulate the variation of elastic modulus through the thickness of shells. The results are presented in two ways, including the general FGM formulation and the laminated modeling. The equilibrium path is obtained by using the Generalized Displacement Control Method. Some popular benchmarks, including hyperbolical shell structures are solved to declare the correctness and accuracy of proposed formulations.

One of the important subjects in fracture mechanics study is to analyze the stress intensity factor. In this paper, the stress intensity factor in Mode I ($K^{I}$) is determined by J-integral using the finite element method. In this investigation, the values of $K^{I}$ are computed for distorted and undistorted elements of 8-noded isoparametric finite elements. The numerical results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) Through a relatively coarse mesh, the $K^{I}$ values obtained by this method are fairly good accuracy. (2) The $K^{I}$ values for the distorted elements appear to be better than those obtained using the undistorted mesh. (3) Within the limits of these analyses, the solutions obtained through the integral paths in the medium region of elements approach to the analytical solution most closely.

A formulation of an isoparametric quadrilateral higher-order plate bending finite element is presented. The 8-noded 28-d.o.f. plate element has been degenerated from the three-dimensional continuum by introducing the plate assumptions and considering higher-order in-plane displacement profile. The element characteristics have been derived by the Galerkin's weighted residual method and computed by using the selective reduced integration technique to avoid shear-locking phenomenon. Several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and versatility of the proposed quadrilateral higher-order plate bending element over the other existing plate finite elements in both static and dynamic analyses.
The stress distributions of hydranlic actuator cylinder tube acting in uniform inner pressure were analysed by the boundary element method(BEM). STKM13C tube was utilized for machine structural purposes model, its inner radius was 100 mm and outer radius was 140 mm. Axial length was semi-infinite and the isoparametric element of BEM was used. Radial and tangential stresses are maximum(-20.3 MPa and 52 MPa) at the inner radius and the minimum at the outer radius of the hydraulic actuator cylinders for an industrial systems. Stress diminution ratio was about 0.6 MPa/mm. And then coincidence between the simulation techniques as exact results(Lame' equation) and finite element method(FEM) is found to be fairly good, showing that the proposed analysis by BEM is reliable.

In this paper, the behavior of plastic zone in the notch tip was studied under Loye's Micro Vickers Hardness Measurement Method. The direction forming maximum plastic zone was estimated by finite element analysis. In the experiments, cold rolling sheet SGCD3, SK5 and hot rolling sheet SS41, S4SC was used to study the influence of carbon contents on plastic zone. The standard hardness test specimen and the notch hardness test specimen was made and loaded cyclically. The specimen was aged to stabilize the hardness. After aging treatment, the notch specimen was made and simple tension load of 50% yield strength was applied. The hardness test at the notch tip until the hardness data of standard hardness specimen was checked was performed.

A numerical method is presented for the dynamic analysis of spur gears rotating with very high angular speeds. For an efficient computation each gear is assumed to consist of a rotating rigid disk and an elastic tooth having mass, and finite element formulations are used for the equations of motion of the tooth. The geometric constraint is imposed between the rigid disk and the elastic tooth to fix them, and contact condition is imposed between the meshing teeth of the gears. At each iteration of each time step the Lagrange multiplier and contact force are revised by using the constraint error vector, and then the whole equations of motion are time integrated with the given Lagrange multiplier and contact force. For the accurate solution the velocity and acceleration constraints as well as the displacement constraint are satisfied by the monotone reductions of the constraint error vectors. Computing procedures associated with the iterative schemes are explained and numerical simulations are conducted with the spur gears.
