  • At present, interest in the welfare of the elderly (persons over sixty-five years of age), including their dietary status, is high. Nutrition and dietary status have been investigated for both the institutionalized and non-institutionalized (independent-living) elderly in foreign country. But the dietary status of institutionalized elderly has not been investigated. Therefore, the dietary status of institutionalized elderly has been studied and compared with that of non-institutionalized elderly in the same geographic area. Three-day dietary records were obtained from fourty-five institutionalized elderly residents (twenty-five men and twenty women) and thirty two elderly living at home (sixteen men and sixteen women) in Taegu area. All nutrient intakes of the elderly women living at home and all nutrient intakes except energy intakes of the elderly men living at home were significantly higher than those of the residents of the institutionalized facilities. (p<0.005) The values of height, weight, chest circumference, and sitting height except head circumference of female elderly living in institutionalized facilities is significantly lower than those of elderly living at home. (p<0.005) In the case of men, the values of height and chest circumference of elderly living in institutionalized facilities is significantly lower than those of elderly living at home. (p<0.05)

Subjects were 185 institutionalized children in 15 child-welfare facilities in Seoul (132 preschooler and 153 primary schoolers; 106 boys and 79 girls). Institutionalized children's cognitive abilities were measured using the Comprehension and Picture Completion Assessment, two subsets of K-WPPSI (Park et al., 1996) Comprehension and Picture Completion Assessment belong to verbal and performance scale, respectively. Measures of behavior problems included anxiety, immaturity, social withdrawal, physical symptom, hyperactivity, and aggression. Data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, and t-test. Results showed that institutionalized children had higher scores in Picture Completion Assessment than Comprehension Assessment. Furthermore, institutionalized children with low scores in Comprehension Assessment were higher in anxiety and social withdrawal than children with high scores in Comprehension Assessment.

Assessment of emotional knowledge consists of identification and situation task. Interpersonal problem solving strategy includes forceful, prosocial, and manipulative strategy. Results showed that there was a significant experimental effect for emotional knowledge. Experimental children showed higher scores of emotional knowledge than control children. Also, there was a significant experimental effect for prosocial and forceful strategy. • This study compared institutionalized children with at home children regarding characteristics of emotional intelligence and self-esteem, and the relationship between the two. The participants of this study were 62 institutionalized children and 98 children reared at home, residing in an undisclosed city. Major findings of this study were as follows. First, the institutionalized children had a lower level of self-esteem and emotional intelligence than children at home. Second, the relationship between self-esteem and emotional intelligence was significantly different between institutionalized and at-home children. Third, in case of institutionalized children, ‘other-regulation and self-expression’ among the emotional intelligence factors was the strongest predictor of ‘scholastic competence’ among self-esteem factors. In contrast, for the at-home children, ‘other-regulation and self-expression’ among the emotional intelligence factors was the strongest predictor of ‘social acceptance’ among self-esteem factors.

  • This study examined whether the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents differ by grade, gender, reason for and length of residence, age at entering the institution, parents' visiting, relationship with parents before entering the institution, and caretakers' emotional support. We assumed that the ego-identities of institutionalized children had an effect on social interactions. The subjects were 121 5th and 6th graders, 135 middle, and 85 high school students who were institutionalized in Seoul. As predicted, the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents differed by grade, and by such social interactions as parents' visiting, relationship with parents before entering the institution, and caretakers' emotional support. Results support the importance of social interactions for understanding the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents.
