  • Soil, tailings, stream sediment and surface water samples collected in the vicinity of the Geumwang Au-Ag mine were analyzed in order to investigate the pollution level of heavy metals and to determine the dispersion patterns. Although the maximum concentrations of soils collected at the flotation plant and tailings dam were 9,270 ppm As, 17 ppm Cd, 1,480 ppm Cu, 10,080 ppm Pb and 18,400 ppm Zn, dispersion of heavy metals were limited in the vicinity of the flotation plant and tailings dam. This may be due to high pH values (> 8.0) of the soils by flotation solution for mineral processing. The pH values of water samples near the flotation plant and tailings dam were over 8.0 and Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations were not detected. The waters in the vicinity of Geumwang mine generally belong to a $Ca^{2+}-SO_{4}{^{2-}}$ $(HCO_3{^-})$ type.

  • An antibody layer was fabricated to detect Escherichia coli O157:H7. The micropattern of 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (16-MHDA) as alkylthiolate was formed on the gold surface by using the PDMS stamp with microcontact printing $({\mu}CP)$ techniques. In order to form antibody patterns on the template, protein G was chemically bound to the 16-MHDA patterns, and antibody was adsorbed on a self-assembled protein G layer. The formation of the 16-MHDA micropattern, self-assembled protein G layer and antibody pattern on Au substrate was confirmed by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy. Finally, the micropatterning method was applied to fabricate the antibody probe for detection of E. coli O157:H7, and monitoring of antigen by using this probe was successfully achieved.

  • Nanotechnology is the creation and utilization of materials, devices, and systems through the control of matter on the nanometer. The technology has been applied to biodevices such as bioelectronics and biochips to improve their performances. Nanoparticles, such as gold (Au) nanoparticles, are the most widely used of the various other nanotechnologies for manipulation at the nanoscale as well as nanobiosensors. The immobilization of biomolecules is playing an increasingly important role in the development of biodevices with high performance. Nanopatteming technology, which is able to increase the density of chip arrays, offers several advantages, including cost lowering, simultaneous multicomponent detection, and the efficiency increase of biochemical reactions. A microftuidic system incorporated with control of nanoliter of fluids is also one of the main applications of nanotechnologies. This can be widely utilized in the various fields because it can reduce detection time due to tiny amounts of fluids, increase signal-to-noise ratio by nanoparticles in channel, and detect multi-targets simultaneously in one chamber. This article reviews nanotechnologies such as the application of nanoparticles for the detection of biomolecules, the immobilization of biomolecules at nanoscale, nanopatterning technologies, and the microfluidic system for molecular diagnosis.

  • Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a multifaceted surface sensitive methodology which exploits spectroscopy-based analysis for various applications. This technique is based on the massive amplification of Raman signals which were feeble previously in order to use them for appropriate identification at qualitative and quantitative in chemical as well as biological systems. This novel powerful technique can be utilized to identify pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. As far as SERS is concerned, one of the most studied problems has been functionalization of SERS active substrate. Metal colloids and nanostructures or microstructures synthesized using noble metals such as Au, Ag and Cu are considered to be SERS active. Silver and gold are extensively used as SERS active substrates due to chemical inertness and stability in air compare to copper. However, use of Cu as a suitable alternative has been taken into account as it is cheap. Herein, we have synthesized air-stable copper microstructures/nanostructures by chemical, electrochemical and microwave-assisted methods. In this paper, we have also discussed the use of as synthesized copper micro/nanostructures as inexpensive yet effective SERS active substrates for the fast identification of micro-organisms like Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

  • Electronic devices are getting smaller due to integration of electronic chip, and heat generated in electronic devices can cause loss of performance and/or reliability of the devices. In this research, metals such as gold, nickel and copper are plated onto a porous membrane by electroless plating method to make an efficient micro-heatsinks. Electroless plating includes sensitization and activation steps in pre-treatment steps. A polycarbonate(PC) membrane was sensitizied, activated and deposited in each metal solution for plating. Among manufactured microfibrils, heat transfer and radiation properties of Ni-microfibril with high surface area were more effective than those of $Au^-$ and Cu-microfibril.

  • The self-assembled monolayers of alkane derivatives with sulfur containing head groups on gold substrates have been widely examined recently, since the binding between S atoms and Au surface is strong. The viologen has been widely investigated their well-behaved electrochemistry including electron transfer mediation, the surface-enhanced of the adsorption and the behavior of supramolecular assemblies at electrode surfaces in theses and various studies. Yiologen monolayers are formed onto QCM by self-assembly method. We studied the relationship of electron transfer from changing the anions in 0.1 M NaCl and NaClO$_4$ electrolyte solution. The EQCM measurements revealed the anions transfer during reduction and oxidation, respectively From the EQCM data, the well-defined shape peaks were nearly equal charges by cyclic voltammetry.

  • We investigated temperature behavior of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) during quenches. Knowledge on temperature behavior during quenches is important to the design of SFCLs, because the temperature of SFCLs is related to their stability. SFCLs were fabricated by patterning $Au/YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ thin films grown on sapphire substrates into meander lines by photolithography. A gold film grown on the back side of the substrate was patterned into a meander line, and used as a temperature sensor. The front meander line was subjected to simulated AC fault currents, and the back line to DC current. They were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment for effective cooling. Overall, temperature at the back side of SFCLs was close to that at the front side. It was closer at the beginning of faults, and at lower applied voltages. Temperature distribution at the back side was even except at the edge, as at the front side. These results tell that the whole SFCL was heated to similar degree during quenches, and that effective cooling of SFCLs at the back side is as important to the stability of SFCLs as at the front side. The results could be explained with the concept of heat transfer within the film.

  • Based on the polarization selectivity of fiber-to-planar waveguide coupler, a novel fiber optic polarizer has been designed and fabricated. The large structural birefringence of a metal-clad planar waveguide enables the polarizer to have wide operating wavelength range. The polymer and gold were used for the guiding layer and cladding layer of the planar waveguide, respectively. The experimental results showed that either TE or TM polarized lightwave could be created by adjusting the thickness of planar waveguide. Operating wavelegth range satisfying more than 16㏈ polarization extinction ratio was 130nm. The average insertion loss of fabricated devices was order of 0.5㏈.

  • Molecular self-assembled of surfactant viologens are recently interesting because they can be from functional electrodes as well as micelle assemblies which can be profitably utilized for display devices, electrochemical studies and electrocatalysis as electron acceptor or electron mediator. The electrochemical behavior of self-assembled viologen monolayer on Au electrode surface has been investigated with QCM which has been known as nano-gram order mass detector. A monolayer of viologen is immobilized on the gold electrode surface and the normal potentials corresponding to the to the successive one-electron transfer processes of the viologen actives are two peaks in 0.1mol/l phosphate buffer solution respectively. These result suggest that the viologen SAMs are stable and well-behaved monolayers.

  • For conventional electrical actuators, the materials are mainly made up of metals, which mean they are prone to corrosion and electrical sparking. Replacing these systems with polymer metal composite based materials can be solved both problems. Considering their excellent electromechanical property, low device fabrication cost, light weight, and good electrical conductivity, the actuator based on ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) was fabricated using Nafion film, NaOH 0.1 molar solution, and Au electrode. IPMCs exhibit good electrostatic property which means they can in principle be used in making actuators based on electromechanical motions. The resistance measurements of Nafion film after soaking in NaOH and deionized water were demonstrated and compared each other. The result of sample soaked in NaOH showed better electrical conductivity than in deionized water. The fabricated IPMC actuator exhibits a large deformation of bending displacement of approximately 9 mm with applied low AC voltage 6.89 V at 2.84 Hz. The result of computer simulation was also very similar and shown as a bending displacement of 8.6085 mm.
