  • The research aimed to investigate characteristics of middle school students in a biology class as science gifted education in terms of self-regulated learning abilities, personality traits and learning preferences. The twenty subject in the study responded to questionnaires of a self-regulated learning ability instrument, a personality trait tool, and a learning preference survey in March, 2009. It was found that the research subjects showed higher levels of cognitive strategies, meta-cognition, and motivation than those students in a previous study(Jung et. al., 2004), while environment was opposite. The level of cognitive strategies was significantly correlated with meta-cognition(r=.610, p=.004) and motivation (r=.538, p=.014) and meta-cognition with environment(r=.717, p=.000). Those students who showed highest levels of self-regulated learning ability displayed various personality traits. One male student with the highest level of self-regulated learning ability showed a personality of hardworking, tender-minded, and conscientious traits and wanted to be a medical doctor. The female student with the second highest level of self-regulated learning ability presented a personality as creative, abstract and divergent thinker and she showed a strong aspiration to be a world-famous biologist with breakthrough contribution. The five students with highest levels of self-regulated learning ability showed a common preference in science learning: they dislike memory-oriented and theory-centered lecture with note-taking from teacher's writings on chalkboard; they prefer science learning with inquiry-oriented laboratory work, discussion among students as well as teachers. However, reasons to prefer discussion were diverse as one student wants to listen other students' opinions while the other student want to present his opinion to other students. The most favorable science teachers appeared to be who ask questions frequently, increase student interests, behave friendly with students, and is a active person. In conclusion, science teaching for the gifted should employ individualized teaching strategies appropriate for individual personality and preferred learning styles as well as meeting with individual interests in science themes.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that affected achievement of socially succeeded people, and to draw ways to improve gifted education. To do this, we interviewed 60 achievers. The interview was administrated as semi-structured deep interview about 6 areas - education, major, family and parent, personal relationship, leisure time activity, achievement and motivation of success. The results showed that achievers were active students during their school days. They thought differentiated education and student-centered lessons are important. Many achievers answered they do not have any personal mentee, and decision of majors and education should be matched with the perception of one's potential and interest. Exercises, music, and reading books were strongly suggested as leisure time activities, and the key inner factors for success were curiosity and self-confidence. Beneficiaries of gifted education perceived their experience of gifted education had a positive influence on their achievement. Based on the these results, ways to improve gifted education were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal impact of the engagement of private tutoring on student achievement and the influence of the engagement of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring by applying hierarchical linear growth modeling technique on the KELS (Korean Education Longitudinal Study) data. For the analysis, we used KELS data including the score of Mathematics achievement from 2005 to 2007 in order to get useful variables like whether or not to engage private tutoring, weekly time and monthly cost of private tutoring, the experience of gifted education, gender, prior achievement of 6th grade, parents' monthly income, internal motivation and self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 4,435 7th graders from Korean middle schools who were included in the KELS and have the data available to a significant dataset having no missing values include. The result suggest that the private tutoring experience predicted students' high Mathematics achievement and the interaction between grade and private tutoring time and cost has negative impact on the mathematics achievement. In contrast, it was found that the experience of gifted education has negative impact on the growth of mathematics achievement, but positive impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement. In other words, the experience of gifted education shows affirmative impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement indirectly. On the basis of this results, we discussed deeply the effect of private tutoring on the Mathematics achievement and the influence and its meaning of the experience of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring.

  • We applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques to examine whether general intelligence (g) could be assessed using a neurobiological signal of the brain. Participants were students in a national science academy and several local high schools. They were administered diverse intelligence (RAPM and WAIS) and creativity tests (TTCT-figural and TTCT-verbal). Forty of them were scanned using fMRI while performing complex and simple g tasks. In brain regions of greater blood flow in complex compared with simple g tasks, the gifted group with an exceptional g level was not significantly different from the average group with an ordinary g level: both of them activated the lateral prefrontal, anterior cingulate, posterior parietal cortices. However, the activation levels of the gifted group were greater than those of the average group, particularly in the posterior parietal cortex. Correlation analysis showed that the activity of the posterior parietal cortex has the highest correlation ($(r=0.73{\sim}0.74)$) with individual g levels and other regions also have moderate correlation ($(r=0.53{\sim}0.66)$). On the other hand, two-sample t test showed a striking contrast in intelligence tests scores between the gifted and the average group, whereas it did not show in creativity tests scores. These results suggest that it is within the bounds of possibility that a neurobiological signal of the brain is used in the assessment of the gifted and also suggest that creativity has to be given a great deal of weight on the assessment of the gifted.

The purpose of this study is to do research on social studies learning with respect to cooperative teaching, and to develop the model of cooperative teaching. The results of this study are as follows: First, We surveyed both the concept of cooperative teaching in all aspects and the methodological application on cooperative teaching. Second, We searched all teaching-learning methods in BSA in terms of cooperative teaching. Third, We studied cooperative teaching system on social studies considering current environmental factors. Forth, We performed seminar class which is constructed as one of the cooperative teaching models. The topic of seminar was 'The distortion and falsification of Koguryeo history in China'. The participants of seminar were volunteer students and social studies teachers whose subjects were geography, history, social studies, and ethics. And the participants conducted the research and cooperative learning based on teacher's subjects and subtopics. Fifth, The interactions between teacher and teacher, student and student, and teacher and student in the process of seminar preparation and publication were conducted very excitedly. Especially we found the possibility of cooperative teaching by the interaction between teachers. Finally, students developed the mind-frame to participate in social studies learning actively, and learned the method to research social affairs for themselves, and extended the eyes to approach social affairs with different opinions.

  • The study aims to analyze teachers' perception of the "personality" area, which can be subjective in the in-depth interview process of selecting gifted children and is easily shunned due to its weak immediate effect. To this end, First, when asked about their difficulties as gifted teachers, many of them answered "professionalism and workload" and cited personality as the most important area to address in-depth interviews in selecting gifted students. It also recognized that personality interviews are necessary for the most basic virtues of education and social contribution, and cited cooperation, consideration, and concession as the sub-components to be dealt with in the personality interview. It was necessary to check whether each student's capabilities were evaluated in a variety of ways in an in-depth interview of the teacher's observing and recommending system. And it needed to be supplemented by in-depth observations such as the development of a valid question, camp or debate in the evaluation of the personality area. In order to reflect the needs of the education field, it will be necessary to supplement the personality interview in the gifted children's selection. And there is also a need to continue to study how to guide the personality education of already selected gifted children.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between learning motivation and task commitment and find sub factors of learning motivation that affect task commitment. For this study 30 science gifted student (4th and 5th grade in elementary school) participated. The survey instruments used for this study were Academic Motivation Scale and Task Commitment Scale. The statistical methods employed for data analysis were the correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The result of this study were as follows: First, the learning motivation and task commitment of science gifted students showed similar levels. But there was differences of strength each sub factors of learning motivation and task commitment. Second, there was a significant positive correlation between learning motivation and task commitment. Also, learning motivation has the explanatory power of predictive variable for the task commitment approximately 49.3%. Expecially learning motivation has significant positive correlation with responsibility and self-control that sub factors of task commitment. Among the sub factor of learning motivation, confidence has most correlations with sub factors of task commitment and significant impact on task commitment. This result indicate that we need to develop learning motivation to improve task commitment and especially develop learning motivation program to grow up confidence of science-gifted.
