Design of a Stepwise Enrichment Curriculum for the Gifted and Talented in Informatics (정보과학영재를 위한 단계별 심화 교육과정의 설계)

  • The current curriculums for the gifted and talented students in informatics are not practical and systematic in teaching methods because it is hard to provide the gifted and talented students with appropriate education individualized at their own levels. Furthermore, there are still some problems in previous curriculums for the gifted and talented students in informatics as follows. First, there are not sufficient on previous curriculums for the gifted and talented education in informatics in middle and high schools. Second, previous curriculums in use do not contribute to cultivating the creativity, problem-solving, logical thinking abilities and insight for the gifted students. Third, there is no curriculum, which reflects on individual's ability and aptitude, for the gifted and talented education in informatics. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest stepwise enrichment curriculums that enables the gifted and talented students to be equipped with creative problem-solving skills and computational thinking abilities. In this regard, at first, The problem with existing research and educational institutes for the gifted and talented in informatics were analyzed. Next we developed a concrete stepwise enrichment curriculum in accordance with the practical educational objectives of the gifted and talented in informatics.

A Comparison of Mathematically Talented Students and Non-Talented Students' Level of Statistical Thinking: Statistical Modeling and Sampling Distribution Understanding (수학영재학급 학생들과 일반학급 학생들의 통계적 사고 수준 비교 연구: 변이성 모델링과 표집분포 이해 능력 중심으로)

  • This study compared levels of mathematically talented students' statistical thinking with those of non-talented students in statistical modeling and sampling distribution understanding. t tests were conducted to test for statistically significant differences between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. In case of statistical modeling, for both of elementary and middle school graders, the t tests show that there is a statistically significant difference between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. Table of frequencies of each level, however, shows that levels of mathematically gifted students' thinking were not distributed at the high levels but were overlapped with those of non-gifted students. A similar tendency is also present in sampling distribution understanding. These results are thought-provoking results in statistics instruction for mathematically talented students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the views of STS by science gifted and talented students. A multiple-choice format questionnaire HS-VOSTS was administered to 134 science gifted and talented students. We found that most of students had possessed the tentativeness of scientific knowledge. Science gifted and talented students mainly agreed that government should not control scientists' researches. Science gifted and talented students emphasized that scientists should consider the positive and negative influences of research products. There was no significant difference according to the gender in the view of science gifted and talented students on the definition of science, the external and internal sociology of science, and epistemology. This study would provide implication for the development of gifted students' program and curriculum.

  • This study is intended to reconsider the meaning of the education for gifted/talented children, the foundation object of science high school by examining the behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students in open-end mathematical problem solving and to provide the basis for realization of 'meaningful teaming' tailored to the learner's level, the essential of school education. For the study, 8 students (4 gifted students and 4 talented students) were selected out of the 1 st grade students in science high school through the distinction procedure of 3 steps and the behavior characteristics between these two groups were analyzed according to the basis established through the literature survey. As the results of this study, the following were founded. (1) It must be recognized that the constituent members of science high school were not the same excellent group and divided into the two groups, gifted students who showed excellence in overall field of mathematical behavior characteristics and talented students who had excellence in learning ability of mathematics. (2) The behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students, members of science high school is understood and a curriculum of science high school must include a lesson for improving the creativity as the educational institutions for gifted/talented students, unlike general high school. Based on these results, it is necessary to try to find a support plan that it reduces the case which gifted students are generalized with common talented students by the same curriculum and induces the meaningful loaming to learners, the essential of school education.

  • In order to secure the national competitiveness in the 21st century's frontier knowledge-based information and globalized society, Korea also needs programs to pick out advanced human resources early and educate them systematically. Therefore the education for the gifted in the information science area is very important, in response to the highly developed Information society, nationally, science-gifted education institutes attached to colleges and several institutions for gifted education have selected and educated the gifted in information science. Therefore, this study is intended to survey local elementary school teachers' awareness on elementary information education for gifted and talented students carried out in jeju by the Education Center for Science Gifted and Talented Students of jeju National University and other education institutions for gifted and talented students in the region and thereby suggest strategies for improvement of the education.

  • The purpose of this study is to statistically analyze the correlation between CS Unplugged education and the computational thinking of gifted and talented students. In this study, qualitative research was conducted for 17 students in 5th grade gifted class at an elementary school in the city of Yongin. Students participated in 10 hours of CS unplugged classes. Student questionnaire, class journals, student activity sheets, and student interview records were collected and qualitatively analyzed. In order to supplement the qualitative data, computational thinking ability tests were also administered. The results of the study are as follows. First, CS unplugged education plays an effective role in improving CT of gifted and talented students. Second, it was not every sub-area of CT that CS unplugged education brought statistically significant improvements in. Third, CS unplugged education is suitable to be presented as the first step of the SW curriculum for gifted and talented students.

  • One of main purposes to educate gifted/talented science students is to express their giftedness. Most of all, it is necessary to examine thoughts of gifted/talented students including a challenge and preparation of it, because their perception of science and scientists can affect on way of thinking, study course or occupation. To investigate this, we studied on the perception of science gifted/talented students toward Nobel science prize. They have lower possibility of Korean scientists' winning Nobel science prize, but they think when they grow up adult they can win it. And most of them have a challenge of winning Nobel prize. It is necessary to study educational stimuli and strategies for gifted/talented students to prosper a challenge of science.

  • The paper-and-pencil multiplce choise test has been widely used to identify gifted and talented student in Korea. Such test have several drawbacks; such~a s not being able to assess creative problem solving abilities and high level thinking abilities which are important characteristics of gifted students. The Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI) developed a performance assessment which challenged traditional methods of identification. The 5-day summer camp was held to select gifted students for the Korean Minjok Leadership Academy. 211 students were evaluated in the aspects of creative problem solving abilities, high level thinking abilities, task commitments, and cooperativeness with various performance tasks, such as essay tests, conversations, oral examinations, computer simulations, puzzles, experiments, group discussions, debates, research reports, and games. As a result, it was found that there were several limitations of the performance assessment in terms of low reliability, requiring high costs and many professionals, and taking long times and large spaces.   • The purpose of this study was to develop and apply of career education program in science and engineering fields for science gifted high school students. To do this, the career education program was developed and applied to science gifted high school students 129 in H-science gifted high school with K-institute. The results are followings. First, after participating in the career education program, the career decision making self-efficacy of students were increased significantly. Second, it has been increased that external factor of career outcome expectation and continuation effort of grit. In this study, it has showed educational effects of the career education programs that related to career recognition in science and engineering fields for science gifted high school students by developing and applying of program. Based on these results, it is necessary to recognize the importance of customized career education programs for science gifted high school students.
