Second, The most influential factor by children's social behaviors was teacher-child relationship. Specially, teacher-child intimacy was the most powerful factor predicting children's asocial behavior and prosocial behavior. • The current study examined the relations among teachers' beliefs, behavioral self-regulation and school readiness of preschoolers. The study sample included 229 preschoolers aged 3 to 5 attending child care centers located in Seoul and Gyeonggi area of Korea. Using Structural Equation Modeling, the paths from teachers' beliefs to children's school readiness via the mediation of their behavioral self-regulation were examined. Children's self-regulation was directly assessed using Head-to-Toe Tasks. The results showed that teachers' stronger beliefs in and responsibility for children's self-regulation and interpersonal skills significantly predicted greater behavioral self-regulation among children, which in turn, significantly influenced greater social skills and work-related skills. The contribution of teachers' beliefs and behavioral regulation to social skills and work-related skills was positive and stronger for boys.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a model for preschool children's self regulation by examining the effects of maternal parenting variables on preschool children's self regulation. The subjects were 1219 mothers of 4- to 6-year-old preschool children attending kindergarten or child care centers located in Seoul and Kyunggi Province, Korea. For data analysis, exploratory factor analysis(EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) were applied to the survey data in the first phase and structural equation modeling(SEM) analysis in the second phase. The major results of this study were as follows: maternal parenting stress and maternal behavior were the most direct influential variables on preschool children's self-regulation. Moreover, maternal parenting efficacy was indirectly mediated through maternal behavior.

  • This study was designed to investigate the relation between mother's interaction strategies and self-regulation of young children from a Vygotskian perspective. The hypotheses of this study were: 1) The self-regulation of young children will improve with increase in age, 2) the use of mothers' interaction strategies will increase as child's age decreases, 3) mothers' directiveness in the mother-child interaction depends on the age of child and socio-economic level, and 4) mothers' directiveness in the mother-child interaction will have negative relationship with child's self-regulation. The subjects of this study were 60 mother-child dyads with three different age-of-child groups (3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds). They were further divided into higher and lower socio-economic groups. A puzzle task was used for the measurement of self-regulation. The task consisted of two identical puzzles with one used as the model. The collected data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$, one-way and two-way analysis of variance, and Pearson's r. Self-regulation of the young children improved with increase in age (P < .05). The use of mothers' interaction strategy decreased as the children's age increased (P < .05). Mothers' directiveness in the mother-child interaction was influenced by the age of child (P < .01) and by socioeconomic level (P < .05). There was a negative correlation (r=-.848) between the mothers' directiveness in the mother-child interaction and the child's self-regulation (P < .001).

First, fathers' play participation was not different by sociodemographic characteristics such as fathers' age, educational level, and job. Second, fathers' participation in functional play, role play, and constructive play was positively related to social activator, reassurance, and cooperation among subscales on children's social competence. Also, fathers' participation in games was negatively related to reassurance among children and positively related to hypersensitivity among children. Third, fathers' participation in role play and functional play was positively related to children's self-monitoring and self-control. • The purpose of this study was to investigate children's ideas about self-regulation in such situational variables as the presence of explicit rules and the domains of social rules. The subjects were 6-, 9-, and 12-year-old children (344). To assess children's ideas about self-regulation, a procedure was devised in which children were presented with stories portraying a protagonist in a conflict between an implicit or an explicit rule and a personal desire. The children were asked to make a choice for the protagonist and to give reasons for their choice. Major findings as follows: (1) There was significant difference in children's self-regulation depending on the presence of explicit rules. (2) There was significant difference in children's self-regulation depending on the domains of social rules. In situations that involved no explicit rules for behaviors, there were significant differences depending on the domains. In situations that involved explicit rules for behaviors, for 6- and 9-year-old children, there was no significant difference depending on the domains. (3) Children's use of justifications for their choice of action varied as a function of the characteristics of the social rules.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the teacher-child relationship as it is self-conceived by teachers in regards to children's peer-competence and self-regulation and to also examine how the teacher-child relationship affects peer-competence and self-regulation. 17 teachers were surveyed using the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale, Peer-Competence Scale and Self-Regulation Scale in regard to approximately 270 children (aged 4-5 years old). Our results indicated that the pro-sociality, sociality, and leadership qualities of child peer-competence correlated positively with the friendliness of teacher-child relationships but correlated negatively in cases of conflicts within the teacher-child relationship. The factors of self-appraisal, self-determination and behavior inhibition of child self-regulation were found to be positively related with the friendliness of teacher-child relation but related negatively with presence of the conflict within the teacher-child relationship. It was also found that sociable and self-determinative children tended to be on more friendly terms with teachers.
