  • The purpose of this study was to examine changes in the rate of occurrence of challenging behaviors in young children according to their increase in age. The study is based on the responses of teachers in child care centers(N=246). They were asked which 38 types of challenging behavior occur most among ages 2, 3, 4, or 5 in young children's classrooms. The major results of this study were as follows. First, the occurrence rates of young children's challenging behaviors were classified into 5 clusters; decreased(Cluster 1, Cluster 2, Cluster 3), maintained(Cluster 4), or increased(Cluster 5) according to increases in their respective ages. Second, the behaviors such as throwing tantrums and biting, evident in Cluster 1, decreased very rapidly from a very high occurrence rate by age 3. The classroom culture maladjustment behaviors such as running aimlessly around the classroom and shouting, apparent in Cluster 2, had decreased rapidly from a high occurrence rate by age 4. The intentional classroom disruptive behaviors such as dropping objects to create noise and the peer culture maladjustment behaviors studied in Cluster 3 decreased gradually from a rate of medium occurrence by age 5. These results revealed the discontinuity which a few young children exhibit. Third, hurting others, observed in Cluster 4 maintained a low occurrence rate from age 2 until age 5. Using inappropriate language and threatening others in Cluster 5 increased gradually from a low occurrence at 2 to a high rate of occurrence at age 5. By carefully examining the change of young children's challenging behaviors on the basis of objective data in terms of the continuity/discontinuity and increased/decreased rate of diverse challenging behaviors, we will be better able help teachers and parents to plan the instruction, prevention and intervention of young children's challenging behaviors.

  • This paper presents a systematic investigation of the fault-mode behaviors of matrix converter systems. Knowledge about converter behaviors after fault occurrence is important from the standpoint of reliable system design, protection and fault-tolerant control. Converter behaviors have been, in detail, examined with both qualitative and quantitative approaches for key fault types, such as switch open-circuited faults and switch short-circuited faults. Investigating the fault-mode behaviors of matrix converters reveals that converter operation with switch short-circuited faults leads to overvoltage stresses as well as overcurrent stresses on other healthy switching components. On the other hand, switch open-circuited faults only result in overvoltage to other switching components. This study can be used to predict fault-mode converter behaviors and determine additional stresses on remaining power circuit components under fault-mode operations.

  • This study investigated relationships among family environment, quality of child care center and chlld's stress behaviors. The subjects were 241 boys, 197 girls and their mothers in 7 child care centers in Seoul and Kyonggido. Children's behaviors were evaluated by three raters(mothers, teachers, and observers) in either a family setting or a child care center. The results showed that children who had problem behaviors in their families showed more stress and problem behaviors in the child care centers. Mothers who reported more stressful life events and parental stress had children with more problem behaviors in their families. Observers and teachers reported fewer stress and problem behaviors in child care centers rated as showing high quality of program.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the developmental trajectories of adolescents' internalizing problem behaviors. The data came from 3,188 middle school students through their participation in the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). Adolescents with a high level of internalizing problem behaviors in the first year showed a rapid decline in these behaviors over time, whereas for adolescents with a low level of these behaviors in the first year the decline was slow. The predictors of the developmental trajectories were related to individual variables, such as gender, self-esteem, self-control, stress, self-stigmatization, and academic achievement. The developmental trajectories of adolescents' internalizing problem behaviors were classified into four groups. The predictors of the patterns of developmental trajectories in adolescents' internalizing problem behaviors appeared to be related to individual variables.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the quality of caregiver's behaviors and children's social behaviors. the quality of caregiver's behaviors were observed during indoor free-play time in the 8 classes at 7 child care centers. Forty children were selected from two classes of high quality caregivers and 2 of low quality caregivers based on the quality of caregiver's behaviors. Children's social behaviors were measured in terms of social competence, social maladjustment, and social interaction. results of the study were as follows: First, children of high quality caregivers were more socially competent than of low quality caregivers. second, there were no significant differences in social maladjustemnt according to the quality of caregiver's behavior. Third, children of high quality caregivers showed more positive and dependent interaction with caregivers high quality caregivers showed more positive and depedndent interaction with caregivers than of low quality teachers. Also, children of high quality caregivers engaged less in aimless behavior and negative interaction with peers than of low quality caregivers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify predictors on health promoting behaviors of university students. Methods: The participants were 310 students by convenience sampling in G city. The data were collected through a questionnaire given to the students between September 10 to November 6, 2006. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean score for the level of health promoting behaviors and optimism was 2.60(${\pm} .31$) and 2.70(${\pm} .55$) respectively. The most frequently used coping skill was the pursuit of social support. There were positive correlations between health promoting behaviors and optimism, between health promoting behaviors and active coping skill, and between health promoting behaviors and passive coping skill. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, the most powerful predictor of health promoting behaviors was active coping skill. Conclusion: The results suggest that coping skills with optimism can be considered when developing a health promotion program for university students.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the parenting behaviors which are represented in traditional fairy tales and creative stories. In this study the parenting behaviors of 44 traditional fairy tales and 52 creative stories for young children were analyzed according to the Korean Maternal Behavior Inventories (KMBI). The results are as follows : First, active participation, affectionate behaviors, reasonable guide, and consistency were represented more in creative stories than in traditional fairy tales and authoritarian control was represented more in traditional fairy tales than in creative stories. Second, fathers in creative stories participated more actively in their children's teaching than fathers on traditional fairy tales. Third, mothers in creative stories showed more affectionate parenting behaviors, participated more actively and showed more consistency in the relationship with their children. Fourth, the parents in traditional fairy tales showed more achievement-oriented parenting behaviors, especially in father-son relationship than others.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of goal-setting on Eco-driving behaviors. An additional purpose was to examine whether setting goals on target behaviors has spread effects on non-target Eco-driving behaviors. Three office workers who drive regularly participated in this study. An AB multiple baseline design was adopted. After baseline (A), participants set goals on two or three target behaviors(e.g., over speeding, put the gears in neutral, extreme acceleration) (B). Results showed that goal-setting was effective in increasing the targeted Eco-driving behaviors. In Addition, most of the non-target Eco-driving behaviors(e.g., extreme break, extreme acceleration) increased.

  • The effects of token and social reinforcement on inappropriate study behaviors of nursery school children were investigated. The subjects were three nursery school boys, and the target behaviors were : 1) out-of-seat behaviors, 2) bothering other children, and 3) disruptive behaviors. The ABAB(Reversal) design was used in this experiment. It consisted of four periods : baseline, reinforcement I, reversal, and reinforcement II. During the reinforcement period, social reinforcement as well as token reinforcement was applied. In all three subjects, inappropriate study behaviors decreased during the reinforcement periods (I, II), and increased during the reversal period, showing the effects of token and social reinforcement. The subjects showed stability in three post-experimental tests, indicating that modification of inappropriate study behaviors was being maintained.
