  • In this paper, we define the directional associated curve and the self-associated curve of a null curve in Minkowski 3-space. We study the properties and relations between the null curve, its directional associated curve and its self-associated curve. At the same time, by solving certain differential equations, we get the explicit representations of some null curves.

  • In this paper, we give some relations related with a spacelike principal-direction curve and a spacelike binormal-direction curve of a timelike Frenet curve. The Darboux-direction curve and the Darboux-rectifying curve of a timelike Frenet curve in Minkowski 3-space $E^3_1$ are introduced and some characterizations related with these associated curves are given. Later we define the spacelike V-direction curve which is associated with a timelike curve lying on a timelike oriented surface in $E^3_1$ and present some results together with the relationships between the curvatures of this associated curve.

  • In this paper, we study null helices, null slant helices and Cartan slant helices in $\mathb{E}^3_1$. Using some associated curves, we characterize the null helices and the Cartan slant helices and construct them. Also, we study a space-like curve with the principal normal vector field which is a degenerate plane curve.

  • The wind velocity profile over the height of a structure in high intensity wind (HIW) events, such as downbursts, differs from that associated with atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) winds. Current design codes for lattice transmission structures contain only limited advice on the treatment of HIW effects, and structural design is carried out using wind load profiles and response factors derived for ABL winds. The present study assesses the load-deformation curve (capacity curve) of a transmission tower under modeled downburst wind loading, and compares it with that obtained for an ABL wind loading profile. The analysis considers nonlinear inelastic response under simulated downburst wind fields. The capacity curve is represented using the relationship between the base shear and the maximum tip displacement. The results indicate that the capacity curve remains relatively consistent between different downburst scenarios and an ABL loading profile. The use of the capacity curve avoids the difficulty associated with defining a reference wind speed and corresponding wind profile that are adequate and applicable for downburst and ABL winds, thereby allowing a direct comparison of response under synoptic and downburst events. Uncertainty propagation analysis is carried out to evaluate the tower capacity by considering the uncertainty in material properties and geometric variables. The results indicated the coefficient of variation of the tower capacity is small compared to those associated with extreme wind speeds.

  • Archimedes showed that the area between a parabola and any chord AB on the parabola is four thirds of the area of triangle ${\Delta}ABP$, where P is the point on the parabola at which the tangent is parallel to the chord AB. Recently, this property of parabolas was proved to be a characteristic property of parabolas. With the aid of this characterization of parabolas, using centroid of triangles associated with a curve we present two conditions which are necessary and sufficient for a strictly locally convex curve in the plane to be a parabola.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify developmental trajectories of externalizing problems in preschoolers and to investigate dimensions of temperament and parental behaviors associated with trajectory groups. Subjects were 180 3- to 5-year-old preschoolers (96 males, 84 females) in the metropolitan area of Seoul. They were assessed three times at 5 month intervals over a one year period. Teachers reported on children's behavior problems, and parents reported on children's temperaments. Latent Growth Curve Modeling Analysis with cohort sequential design revealed externalizing behaviors gradually decreased between 3 and 6. At the 6-year-old level externalizing behaviors were associated with high novelty seeking temperament. The results were discussed in terms of the importance of longitudinal research in developmental psychopathology.

  • The brake squeal propensity associated with friction curve is investigated by using the hybrid finite element(FE)-analytical model. The modal analysis of an actual disc and pad is conducted by FE method. Also, the modeling for the accurate contact and disc rotation is analytically achieved. The eigenvalue analysis for the hybrid model provided the squeal dependency on the friction curve. Particularly, some pad modes and the disc torsion mode are shown to be sensitive for the friction curve.

  • In this paper we propose a disturbance design method to test a system's stability. It is shown that the time maximum disturbance is represented in bang-bang and state feedback form. To maximize the time severity index, the value of disturbance is determined by the associated switch curve. The original switch curve is vulnerable to model uncertainties and takes much calculation time. We propose an improved method to approximate the original switch curve. This reduces the computational time and implements sufficiently to test the stable system. Simulation results show how the approximate switch curve can be used to stress a system by driving it to oscillation along the maximum limit cycle.

  • In this study the subcritical crack growth behavior in an Al2O3-SiCw composite has been investigated using in situ fracture technique of applied moment double cantilever beam (AMDCB) specimens indside an SEM. This technique allows the detailed observation of whisker and grain bridging in the crack wake region. The experimental results indicated that the KI-a curve was deviated from the conventional powder law form and that the existed a region where the rate of microcrack growth was decreased with increasing the externally applied stress intensity factor. This behavior could be explained by arising crack growth resistance i.e. R-curve behavior which was associated with crack shielding due to whisker and grain bridging. The R-curve was also analyzed from the KI-a curve data in order to quantify the bridging effect in the Al2O3-SiCw composite.

  • Surface texturing of micro-dimples has been used in many manufacturing industries to reduce friction between two sliding contacted surfaces. Surface texturing decreases the frictional force owing to minimizing of the sliding contact area. In this paper, micro-dimples have been fabricated on an Al6061-T6 surface using a two-frequency elliptical vibration texturing (TFEVT) method. A high-frequency of 18 kHz and low-frequency of 250 Hz were applied to an elliptically-vibrated tool holder. The Stribeck curve was plotted to analyze the friction coefficient trends. Furthermore, the representative wetting index, such as the water contact angle (WCA), was measured by considering the friction coefficient. WCA is associated with micro-dimple density and associated parameters. Consequently, the dimpled surfaces with a low friction coefficient exhibited a relatively high WCA in the feed direction. According to the Stribeck curve, the dimpled surfaces demonstrate superior friction performance for mixed-film lubrication compared to the non-textured surface.
