The purposes of this study were to examine the overall tendency of perception of school environment and school adjustment in early adolescents during their transition from elementary to middle school. Also, examine the differences of adolescents' perception of school environment and school adjustment before and after entering secondary education. For this study, a total of 781 adolescents from middle school were asked to answer the questionnaire. And some objects of study, a total of 119 adolescents had answered in the same questionnaire content at the end of sixth grade of elementary school. The main findings were as followings. First, adolescents' perception of school environment during the transition to middle school was relatively good level, but perception of school safety appeared to be lower than average. Second, adolescents' school adjustment during the transition was comparatively good, particularly school life adjustment and school peer adjustment appeared to be above average. Third, there were significant positive relationships between perception of school environment and school adjustment. Fourth, adolescents' perception of school environment significantly decreased after they entered middle school, and significant differences were found in teacher support. Fifth, there were no differences in school adjustment before and after entering middle school, however school class adjustment and school life adjustment were significantly increased after the entrance into middle school.
The purposes of this study are to explore mother's involvement in children's education and to examine its impacts on the school adjustment of poor family children. A total of 171 low-income mothers and their children attending middle school completed a structured questionnaire. Overall, the results show that the mothers tend to involve in their children's education to some degree. But the extent of maternal involvement is not uniform across the types of involvement. In order to analyze factors that affect the school adjustment which is measured as grades and attitudes toward school life, path analysis is perfomed. The affective parenting is found to have indirect effects on school adjustment of middle school students through maternal involvement in their children's education.
This study explored the longitudinal relationships between school life adjustment and the parents' neglect/abuse as perceived by children according to gender. The participants were 5th and 6th grade children and the instruments were parents' neglect/abuse scale and school life adjustment scale. Using Korea Youth Panel data of Child Youth Policy Institute of Korea, 5th and 6th grade data were analyzed. The results were as follows: Neglect/abuse as perceived by children were different according to their gender and grade. Children who had perceived more parents' neglect/abuse were more likely to have difficulty in school life adjustment. The results of this study suggest that the appropriate interventions for the parents' neglect and abuse is needed by showing the stability of the child's perception of the parents' neglect and abuse during the 5th-6th grade.
The goal of this study was to examine the correlations of stress coping strategies and cultural, psychological and school adjustment among Korean early study-abroad adolescents in the United States. Participants were 437 Korean early study-abroad adolescents aged 15 to 18 years old enrolled in summer language institutes located in Seoul and Gyeonggido, South Korea. The survey consisted of questionnaires relating to coping strategies and, cultural, psychological and school adjustments. The data was collected during the break time of summer language institute classes. Results showed that these adolescents' problem focused and social support coping strategies were positively related with acculturation, psychological adjustment and school adjustment, and emotion focused coping strategy was positively related to satisfaction of life.
The Ecological variables studied in relation to children's school adjustment were organisms(grade, sex, perceived competence, aggression and withdrawal), microsystems(parental support, marital conflict and supervision, peer victimization and perceived teacher attitude), mesosystems(family-peer relationships, family-school relationships) and the exosystem(neighborhood environment). The sample consisted of 565 fifth and sixth grade children. Instruments were the School Adjustment Scale and Index of organisms, microsystems, mesosystems, and exosystem variables. Statistics and methods used for the data analysis were Cronbach's alpha, frequency, percentage, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression. Several major results were found from the analysis. First, children's school adjustment showed positive correlations with perceived competence, parental support and supervision, perceived teacher attitude, family/peer and family/school relationships and neighborhood environment but showed negative correlations with grade, aggression, withdrawal and parental marital conflict and peer victimization. Second, the most important variable predicting child's relationship with teacher, his/her academic adjustment and satisfaction in schoolwas perceived teacher attitude. And the most important variable predicting children's peer relationships in school was perceived social competence.
Purpose. to help them find mental rest and improve school life adjustment by way of a fine art cure program. Methods. two primary schools in Gyeongsangnam-do were chosen where there are plenty of multiple-family kids. 13 children from the families between Korean husbands and foreign wives were divided into 2 groups: experimental group (7, C School), control group (6, H School). The two groups took the KSD (Kinetic School Draw), while the experimental group received a fine art cure program (40 minutes, once a week, 10 times in total). After the program, the KSD was given again to both groups. To prove the effects of this study, the picture projection test KSD was given before and after the experiment. For comparison and analysis, the changes in each individual's attitude, behavior, responses, and emotions were observed and recorded. Results. The fine art treatment program had some effects on the psychological rest of the elementary school children from multiple-culture families. In the pretest before the art cure program, the subjects shrank and cared a lot about others. According to the progress of the program, however, their worries and anxiety began to be gone. They had confidence through mental ease and self-respect. Therefore, the fine art cure program had a positive effect on the improvement of self-respect and sociality of multiple-culture family kids. Their school life was influenced by the newly-attained confidence, achievement, and peer relationship. Conclusions. This research is of some significance in that the fine art cure program was held to reveal its effects on the school life adjustment of the elementary school kids from multiple-culture families, especially because worries grow about the possibility of their maladjustment in the era of multiple-culture families. In addition, this program is expected to give some basic information about the development of programs to make friendly relations and smooth communication among the multiple-culture parents and teachers as well.
