  • The purpose of this study is to explore the linguistic elements that can promote academic literacy in terms of content-based instructions for KSL learners. In order to study the characteristics of learning languages for subjects, focus was given to the framework of systematic functional linguistics that has been extensively used in ELL teaching and learning research in the United States and Australia. History, which is taught in all classes and classified as a required course, was the subject of analysis. From the history curriculum, the elementary school level texts "Social Studies 5-2" and "Social Studies 6-1" were chosen for the analysis. Based on the results, we can come to the following conclusions. First, history textbooks are divided into narrative and analytical explanatory sub-genres based on their content, and there are differences in the factors that need to be focused on to find the main information. Second, the vocabulary of history textbooks should focus on the use of verbs which comprehend material processes. Particularly, learners should pay attention to the differences in meaning between low-frequency expressions. We hope that the results of this study will have a positive effect on history subject learning for learners in the "Adaptive Korean Course" and will help establish direction in terms of building curriculum contents for KSL learners.

  • The texts in the national science curriculum documents are expected to be interpreted in the same meaning as that of the authors. In this study, the science achievement standards in national curriculum documents were examined through an analysis of the differences between the interpretations of Korean language education experts and science education experts. Three Korean language education experts designed and utilized an analysis framework on science curriculum standards from their viewpoints while three science education experts utilized TIMSS cognitive domain framework to analyze the 2009 Korean revised science curriculum achievement standards. The differences between interpretations of both groups were analyzed qualitatively through interviews. First of all, the two groups seemed to have different meanings for terms such as "explain," "analyze," "define," and "cause and effect." The science achievement standards described by general verbs like "explain" were interpreted in various ways. The verb "explain" that appears many times in the science achievement standards seem to be representing the "describe" subsections in the framework of Korean language education expert rather than the "explain" subsections of the framework of science education experts. Science education experts seemed to focus on prepositional phrases, which indicate inquiry process, while Korean language education experts seemed to focus on objective phrases. Moreover, the science education experts would interpret the achievement standards based on their background knowledge while the Korean language education experts would interpret them based on the structure of the sentences. This study suggests that achievement standards should specifically indicate the levels and scopes of cognitive domain as well as the knowledge domain. Also, integrations of achievement standards in cognitive domains of Korean language and science subjects should be considered.

    • Recently, the connection between science museum and school science curriculum has been emphasized, but the frameworks for evaluating school science curricula are insufficient in terms of how much of school science curriculum was reflected and attained. The purposes of this study are to develop a framework that can be utilized to evaluate levels of curriculum that are reflected and attained in the texts of exhibition panels displayed in science museums. We developed an evaluation tool based on the frameworks used to assess students' achievement in the secondary school curriculum, and we used the tool to measure the reflection and attainment levels demonstrated in the texts of exhibition panels about earth science contents of secondary school curriculum in three science museums located in Chungcheong-do, central part of Korea. Findings showed that the levels of reflection and attainment of secondary school curriculum in exhibition panels about earth science contents in science museums were measured 38.7% and 2.82 points out of 5.0respectively. We hope that the evaluation tool used in this study could be utilized to measure the levels of reflection and attainment of secondary school science curriculum demonstrated in the text of each of exhibition panels in science museums.

    • The purpose of this study is to analyze and diagnose the curriculum framework of dental hygiene department. Through document analysis process, this study found several empirical data which could give us a clue to understand characteristics of curriculum changes and factors which have impacts on those changes in curriculum at college level. In this study, we could conclude that even curriculum changes at college level had been influenced by social changes like extention of academic years from 2 years to 3 years and changes in licensure test at national level. And also, essential issues in college curriculum like amount of credits, course titles, and requirements-electives distinction etc. also were changed in accordance to social changes and requests. This study found that there is many difference of objectives, credits and course titles among colleges. For that, colleges will form a consultative group under the college level. Based on these results, we can suggest that college curriculum should be flexibly and effectively adapted to changes coping with social and policy changes.

    • This study analyzed the visual images covering 'weather' and 'weather forecast' in elementary science textbooks from the Syllabus Period to the 7th national curriculum from the socio-semiotic perspective. The results showed that most of the visual images were 'realistic' which were descriptive of real world phenomena. This means that most of the visual images in elementary science text were familiar to students in every curriculum period. The power relationship in communication between images and students was very complex. The visual images in elementary science textbooks include few geometrical and alphanumeric code in every curriculum period. This study provides a new framework to interpret amount of information, functions of information, structures, and social meanings of visual images. It could be also a beginning stage to introduce the socio-semiotic perspective into choosing visual images for next science textbooks.
