  • The superworm, as known the larva of Zophobas morio, has been officially imported from 2011 and bred commercially in Korea. But it is named as the corrected scientific name, Zophobas atratus by junior synonym throughout traditional taxonomy in this study and newly designated Korean name as 'a-me-ri-ca-wang-geo-jeo-ri' in terms of resource management. Z. atratus was compared with wild native tenebrionids, Promethis valgipes and a commercial reared Tenebrio molitor on the basis of DNA barcode analysis. As the results, the average genetic divergence was 21.4% between Z. atratus and P. valgipes, and 20.9% between Z. atratus and T. molitor. These large divergences imply these tenebrionids species can be easily identified by DNA barcodes. The results of genetic divergences within species also suggest that Korean populations of Z. atratus, having the same haplotype, might be introduced from the same area of foreign country. On the other hand, a population of T. molitor was separated into two distinct intra-specific groups with DNA barcoding gaps ranged from 1.17- 2.19%. We suppose that domestic breeding entities of T. molitor might be introduced and mixed from two different local groups. Through this study, we expect that classification for two tenebrionid introduced from foreign countries can be used for the management of insect resources in Korea.

  • The history of Bibimbap, Korea representative traditional foods, was distorted by some humanities scholars as follows : First literature on Bibimbap is Siujonseo(是議全書) in 1890 and origin word of Bibimbap is Koldongban(骨董飯). Such discussions are totally non-scientific and not true. Bibimbap was recorded as Hondonban(混沌飯) in Kijaejapki 500 years ago and Koldongban(骨董飯) in Sunghojeonjip(星湖全集) and Bubuiban, which mean the people in Korea had the Bibimbap often thousands years ago, i.e. around 500 years before literature. Hangul name of Bibimbap as '브뷔움' was written firstly in Mongyupyun(夢喩篇) in 1810, not Siujonseo(是議全書). Hangul names of Bibimbap were written as '부뷔음, 부빔밥, 부?밥, 부뷘밥, 부뷔엄밥, 부뷔음밥'. Koldongban is only the chinese character which write the real existent Bibimbap real name of Bibimbap is just bibimbap. People in 500 years called Bibimbap as Bibimbap, but wrote it as Koldongban, Hondonban and Bubiban because they had to write the things in Chinese character.

  • We found Diplachne fusca subsp. uninervia (J. Presl) P.M. Peterson & N. Snow, an unrecorded alien plant, in Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do and Ganghwa-gun, Incheon Metropolitan City. Diplachne fusca subsp. uninervia is native to North America (the USA and Mexico), Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua), the Caribbean (the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico), and South America (Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay). It is reported as an invasive species worldwide. Diplachne fusca subsp. uninervia is closely related to D. fusca subsp. fascicularis (Lam.) P.M. Peterson & N. Snow (Gaet-deu-reong-sae in Korean), an invasive species in Korea, and both are infraspecific taxa of the species D. fusca. Diplachne fusca subsp. uninervia is distinguished from D. fusca subsp. fascicularis by the small size of its spikelets, glumes, and lemmas, with apex awnless. Its common name is "Jom-gaet-deu-reong-sae" based on the short spikelets. We found that D. fusca (≡Leptochloa fusca), previously known as "Gaet-deu-reong-sae", was misapplied. It is morphologically different from D. fusca subsp. fascicularis. Therefore, we changed the scientific name of Gaet-deu-reong-sae from D. fusca (≡L. fusca) to D. fusca subsp. fascicularis based on the type specimens, original descriptions, and recent studies.

  • DNA barcode sequences of commercial seafood products, which are difficult to morphologically discriminate, were analyzed to determine cases of food fraud. The gene sequences were analyzed by amplifying the COX I (cytochrome C oxidase subunit I) gene region of mitochondrial DNA, which is mainly used for species identification. The DNA barcode sequences were compared with the gene sequence of each fish registered in the US National Center for Biotechnology. A total of 46 processed seafood products (12 Pagrus majo, 4 Oplegnathus fasciatus, 7 Dentex tumifrons, 2 Acanthopagrus schlegelii, 7 Oreochromis niloticus, 6 Branchiostegus japonicus, 8 Branchiostegus albus) were investigated. Having DNA sequence identity of more than 97% was judged as the same species. As a result of this study, no cases of forgery and alteration were detected. However, some disparities in the commercial names used in local markets and the standard names given in the Korea Food Code were found, which may cause confusion for consumers. It is therefore suggested that the standard name or scientific name be displayed on seafood product labels.

  • Korean Ginseng is a medicinal herb which grows naturally in korea. an ancient country situated in north-eastern Asia. Its medical use was already well known to herb doctors in this region about five thousand years ago since the effectiveness of korean ginseng has been recognized through practical use for a long time. Korean Ginseng has always been regarded as a devine cure. The name "Ginseng" can be found in various medicinal books. many of which were written as early as B.C. 100. In the records of many chinese medical books. dating from the inception of publishing, it was noted that Korean Ginseng was of the highest level of quality. Korean Ginseng originally grew in the mountains of korea. However, this wild Korean Ginseng(js called SANSAM) could not meet the ever-increasing demands. and from the 16th century. it has been cultivated on farms for mass processing and supplying in korea(js called INSAM). It was already recognized in korea a long time ago(B.C. 57 - A.D. 668) that Korean Ginseng possessed the qualities of panacea, tonic and rejuvenator, and had other medicinal properties as well. The effectiveness of Korean Ginseng is widely recognized among south-eastern Asians as well as Chinese. As its effect has been proved scientifically. Korean Ginseng is now becoming the ginseng for all human beings in the world. Korean ginseng is differently called according to processing method. Dried thing is Insam(white ginseng), boiled or steamed is Hongsam(red ginseng). 장뇌삼(long headed ginseng) is artificially grown in the mountain no in field for a long time. So the body is thin and some long. but ingredients are concentrated. Korean wild ginseng(SANSAM) is rare in these days but we developed cosmetic ingredient. The scientific name of Korean Ginseng is Panax Ginseng. It has acknowledge as a natural mysterious cure among the notheastern peoples. because of its broad medicinal application. The origin of the word" Panax" derived from panacea. a Greek word meaning cure-all. According to the classification method of herb medicines in the Chinese medicinal book. "God-Farmer Materia Medica(A.D. 483-496) korean Ginseng was described as the superlative drug: panacea. tonic and rejuvenator. We studied skin immunological effect. collagen synthesis. cell growth and whitening effect of SANSAM extract. IN cosmetics.. • Oil paints are mixtures of pigments, drying oils and additives. In the past, oil paints were mainly composed of inorganic pigments. However, recently color matching techniques vary depending on manufacturers due to the development of various kinds of synthetic pigments. Despite this, most studies of oil paints in South Korea are about durability tests, and there is no comparative study on the characteristics of commercial oil paint components. This study aims to compare the properties of four different kinds of oil paints from four manufacturers, which are the most popularity used. Extender pigments in oil paint from C brand differed from that of other manufacturers and various kinds of coloring pigments were differently used depending on the oil paints and the manufacturers. The mixing ratios and the pigment types differed even for oil paints having the same product name. It is assumed that these differences could affect the colors. The result of this study is expected to contribute to the analysis of artworks through the accumulation of scientific data of oil paints. In addition, it can be utilized as a scientific basis for art history studies, including the characteristics of artists or production year.

  • To clarify the taxonomic position for Astragalus nakaianus and provide correct scientific name for A. mongholicus cultivar in South Korea, we examined external morphological characters and sequence variations from ITS and five cp non-coding DNA regions. Genetic structure was also analyzed for 61 individuals from three populations using nine microsatellite loci. We found no significant difference between the South Korean cultivar and A. mongholicus var. dahuricus when morphology and ITS sequences were considered. Morphologically, A. nakaianus specimens varied somewhat from A. mongholicus var. mongholicus and var. dahuricus in habit, plant height, and lengths of leaf axis and leaflet. Although sequence data from ITS and cp noncoding DNA regions could not distinguished A. nakaianus from A. mongholicus, microsatellite analysis revealed strong structuring between the cultivar and A. nakaianus. Therefore, we conclude that the South Korean A. mongholicus cultivar should be treated as A. mongholicus var. dahuricus and that A. nakaianus should be merged into A. mongholicus as a variety, i.e., A. mongholicus var. nakaianus.

  • "Jocheonillgi", one of the articles left by Jo Heon(1544~1592) whose pen name was Jung-bong, is a travelogue which was written in around 1574~1575 when he was dispatched to Ming as a formal envoy(Giljungkwan). The diary-style manuscript was designated as one of the pieces of the National Treasure 1007. Due to the damage of its binding strings, abrasion, fold, stain, insect and damage on the surface, conservation and restoration was needed. In the process of separation, three more binding strings were found, confirming that the travelogue was rebound at least twice in the past. In addition, the page of 'Yeondoillgi', the original title, was bound inside, confirming that the current cover was revised in the past. As the result of the investigation of base fabric, paper mulberry was found to be the cover, inside paper, lining paper, paper strings. The three kinds of binding string including the current ones was defined to be silk.

  • For about half a century. dental implants made of titanium have developed as a method of restoration for the tooth loss. In these days. the titanium implants seem to be considered as the alternative for the conventional prosthodontics. But its hard to say that the titanium implants are superior to the treatments that preserve the natural tooth. As this is a general opinion among dentists. the implant will not be able to be the alternative for all the prosthetic treatments. Clinically, there are many causes for extracting tooth. The severe destruction of the tooth structure or periodontal diseases leads to inevitable tooth extraction. When the complete cure is doubtful because of narrow intraoral visibility and improper accessibility in approaching to the tooth and periodontal lesion, we. clinicians often inevitably extract tooth. Passive treatments like conventional restoration, curettage or surgical flap cant be the perfect treatments for the tooth that has subgingival root caries or severe periodontal diseases involved furcation. Many clinicians might have been forced to pull out the relatively healthy tooth by the difficulties of approaching to the lesions and poor prognosis. Though the intentional tooth replantation is performed sometimes. as it doesnt have enough scientific foundation. it has not been considered as a popular treatment method yet. I have been felt keenly the necessity of positive tooth preservation, so I have been attempting the treatment that has new concept. calling Natural Tooth Implantation (NTI) clinically. NTI differs from the tooth replantation in the goal for the treatment and biological healing process. Now. I confirm that NT! is a very positive and valid method of tooth preservation. Like you can get from the name. NTI is the dental implant procedure using natural teeth and similar to the healing process of the titanium implants in many aspects. I have been using biocompatible composite resin. DRM. with NTI and got affirmative clinical results from that. So I would like to introduce.roduce.

  • This study is about the scale to evaluate the data of the countermeasures in the 'simulation based government exercise' (tentative name). The criteria and weighting of the scale is a standard for evaluating the data of each agency input. This maintains the objectivity and consistency of the evaluation, which complements the subjective evaluation of the observer. Therefore, the criteria should accommodate the purpose of the government exercise evaluation, the possibility of measurement in the simulation environment, the objectivity, no-duplication and causality between criteria, and the grade applying the evaluation results, and the weighting should be set. In this study, three major criteria of timeliness, accuracy, and appropriateness is set up for the evaluation scale and it consists of sub-criteria classified into three classes below respectively and the concept of it was defined. The weighting was calculated by AHP analysis considering the hierarchical structure of it. When this evaluation scale is applied to the 'simulation based government exercise' in the future, it will be possible to secure consistency and objectivity of the evaluation of measures by integrating the quantified evaluation into the observation evaluation and to conduct AAR by scientific techniques.
