The Effect of the STEAM Program utilizing Regional Science Experiences Resource for Scientific Attitude and STEAM Literacy (지역체험자원을 활용한 STEAM수업이 과학적 태도와 융합인재소양에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of creative thinking activities and STEAM Literacy through the use of the STEAM program utilizing Regional Science Experience Resource for elementary students. For the purpose of this study, a teaching plan and worksheet for students using STEAM Programs was developed and applied. The results of this study are as follows: First, the improvement in the scientific attitude score has statistically meaningful difference(p<.05). Second, the change in students' STEAM literach by applying the STEAM program utilizing Regional Science Experiences Resource has statistically meaningful difference (p<.05). Third, according to the analysis of a questionnaire used to evaluate the program, students had a positive perception of the STEAM program and gained higher level of satisfaction about the lesson. Therefore, STEAM Program utilizing Regional Science Experiences Resource applied in this study might be useful to improve STEAM Literacy, and can be expected to improve scientific attitude and should be widely applied to Science education.

The Effects of Science Instruction using Integrative Educational Model(IEM) in Elementary Science Gifted Classes on Academic Achievement and Scientific Attitude (Clark의 통합교육모형(IEM)을 적용한 과학 수업이 초등과학영재반의 학업 성취도와 과학적 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of science instruction using integrative educational model on academic achievement and scientific attitude in gifted classes on elementary science. Integrative educational model (hereafter referred as IEM) was developed by synthesizing the findings from brain research, the new physics, general systems theory, and educational psychology. 77 6th graders of B Metropolitan City's Elementary Gifted Education Center were took part in this study. The experimental group, consisting of 39 students, was applied to the instruction using IEM, while the comparison group, 38 students, was applied to instructor- led instruction. The results of this study were as follows: First, the science instruction using IEM had a positive effect on improving achievement in gifted classes on elementary science. Second, the science instruction using IEM had an influence on inquisitiveness and openness of the lower domains of learners' scientific attitude. Third, the science instruction using IEM had a positive response to learners' interest, comprehensibility about lesson contents, and ability to concentrate on classes.

An Effect of Peer Mentoring Activity on Science Process Skills, Achievement and Scientific Attitude in Elementary Science Class (초등 과학 수업에서 학생 동료 멘토링 활동이 과학 탐구 능력, 학업 성취도 및 과학적 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of peer mentoring activity in elementary school. For this study, an experimental group was conducted for peer mentoring activity in science class. The mentoring team was organized by mento-mentee team according to the scores of science process skill and achievement. The objects of this study were the sixth grade of both an experimental group (28 students) and a control group (27 students) located in Incheon. The results of this study were as follows. First, the experimental group was shown more significant effect for improvement of science process skills than the control group (p<.05). As the result of analysis by groups, both of mento and mentee showed significant effect for improvement of science process skills. Second, the peer mentoring activity showed more significant effect for improvement of achievement (p<.05). As the result of analysis by groups, mentee showed significant effect for improvement achievement. But mento group didn't show significant effect. Third, the peer mentoring activity showed the effect for positive changes of scientific attitude. If matching the mentoring object effectively and conducting the classes applying peer mentoring activity based on the results of this study, it's expected to draw student' improvement of science academic, achievement and positive changes of scientific attitude.

The Effects of Creative Product Performance on the Scientific Attitude, Scientific Self Efficacy and Creative Problem Solving Ability of Science-Gifted Elementary Student (창의 산출물 활동이 초등 과학영재반 학생들의 과학적 태도, 과학 자기효능감, 창의적 문제해결력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of creative product performance on scientific attitude, scientific self efficacy and creative problem solving ability of science-gifted elementary students. The subjects of the study were 20 students who were enrolled in science-gifted class of G elementary school. 8 period lessons of the creative product performance were given to the students after simulated creative product performance lessons. Pre and post tests were done before and after executing lessons to assess the change of students' scientific attitude, scientific self efficacy and creative problem solving ability. The findings and results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, creative product performance had meaningful effect in improving scientific attitude of science-gifted students. Second, creative product performance had meaningful effect in improving scientific self efficacy of science-gifted students. Third, creative product performance had meaningful effect in improving creative problem solving ability of science-gifted students. From questionnaire interview, we could know that subject students had difficulties in carrying out the performance at first but after the performance they came to have favorable impression and high satisfaction level about the performance.

  • This research aimed at developing STEAM Program with the medium of films for scientific talents in elementary schools and examining its influence on the problem solving ability, creative personality, and scientific attitude. The results were as follows: First, the STEAM program using movies was proved to be effective in forming creative personality, and a significant difference was found especially in the areas of patience/obsession, self conviction, sense of humor, curiosity, imagination, openness, adventurous spirit, and spirit of independence(p<.05). Second, the STEAM program using movies was found to be a successful way to improve their problem solving ability, and in particular, the difference was significant in the areas of planning an experiment and creative problem solving ability(p<.05). Third, the program was also found to be effective for the enhancement in their scientific attitude, and the difference, particularly in the areas of curiosity, openness, criticism, cooperation, spontaneity, patience, creativity and scientific attitude, was significant(p<.05). The study results above indicated that the STEAM program using movies was an efficacious way in forming creative personality, and enhancing creative problem solving ability and scientific attitude.

  • This study was aimed to explore the effect of the physical science activity based on the constructivism on young children's scientific process skills and scientific attitudes, cognitive self-esteem. The subjects consisted of 20 five-years-old children of experimental group and 20 children of control group. Children of experimental group conducted the physical science activity based on the constructivism for total six weeks. As a result of study, children who experimental group showed significant result in the scientific process skill, scientific attitude, cognitive self-esteem. The educational implications of these indicate that we need to actively develop programs to increase scientific process skills and scientific attitude, cognition self-esteem of young children through teacher's education.

  • The purpose of this study was to see the influences of POE science class that emphasizes explanation on science research ability, motivation of science class as well as scientific attitude of elementary students. The results drawn from this analysis were as below. Firstly, positive relationship was found between science research ability and POE science class was shown among research group. This shows that science research ability was improved as POE science class encouraged the research activities of students. It indicates that POE science class emphasizing explanation is effective in improving science research ability of students. Secondly, positive relationship was found between motivation of science class and POE science class among research group and this means that POE science class that emphasizes explanation stimulates intellectual curiosity of students and improves their attitude by actively promoting research activities. Thirdly, there was a positive relationship between scientific attitude and POE science class among research group. This presents that POE science class emphasizing explanation is effective in improving students' attitude toward science by promoting research activities. Above results show that POE science class emphasizing explanation is highly effective for elementary students. It is considered that scientific writing, discussion and debate classes have positive influences on research ability, motivation of science class and scientific attitude of elementary students. Thus, it is needed to apply POE science class to current science class as it can promote wider scientific activities among students.

The Effect of learning dimensions Oriented Elementary Science Lecture on Scientific Attitude, Academic Achievement, and Logical Thinking-based on 'Earth' section in the 2nd semester of the 5th grade (학습차원을 강조한 초등 과학 수업이 과학태도, 학업성취도 및 논리적 사고력에 미치는 영향 - 5 학년 2학기 지구 영역을 중심으로)

  • This study is aiming to determine the effect of learning dimensions oriented elementary science lecture on scientific attitude, academic achievement, and logical thinking based on 'Earth' section in the 2nd semester of the 5th grade. Analyzing sub-categories of dimension in each lecture before teaching, a teaching and a learning plans based on dimension 3 and 4 were devised and applied. The result of this study is as follows: Firstly, when sub-categories of Earth section in the 2nd semester of the 5th grade in elementary schools were examined, the unit '5-2-4. Volcanoes and Rocks' was missing 8 of total 28 sub-units, while '5-2-7. Solar families' unit was covering all sub-units of every learning dimension. Secondly, learning dimensions 3 and 4 centered elementary school teaching caused significant difference in scientific attitude. Especially, among other sub-categories of scientific attitudes, 'Social meaning of Science', 'Attitude toward Science lessons' were better improved. Thirdly, learning dimensions 3 and 4 based elementary school lectures didn't bring significant difference to academic achievement. Fourthly, learning dimensions 3 and 4 oriented elementary lessons didn't imply significant difference in sub-logics of logical thinking, however proved to be helpful for students of transitional age.

The Effect of Maker Education on Elementary School Students' Scientific Attitude and Energy Literacy (메이커 교육을 활용한 에너지 교육이 초등학생의 과학적 태도와 에너지 소양에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effect of maker education on the scientific attitude and energy literacy of elementary school students. The subjects of this study were 23 6th grade students, 13 male students and 10 female students, in a B Metropolitan city elementary school. Students' scientific attitude and energy literacy was observed before and after the introduction of maker education into energy education class. The results of this study were as follows. First, energy education using maker education had a positive effect on elementary school students' scientific attitude; there was a significant improvement in curiosity, openness, critical thinking, cooperation, spontaneity, persistence, and creativity. Second, maker education had a positive effect on the energy literacy of elementary school students. There was a significant improvement in all components of energy literacy.

  • Objective: This study aims to investigate the effects of a learning cycle model-based early childhood education program using physical motion on young children's scientific inquiry ability, scientific attitude, object manipulation ability and spatial ability. Methods: The subjects of this study were 60 five-year-old children who were attending K-G City Childcare Center. The SPSS Window 21.0 program and content analysis method were used, and post-validation Tukey was conducted to examine the differences between the one-way ANOVA and the group. Results: Activities using body movement were practiced systematically based on the circle learning. Children could revise their pre-concept and concept of error by interacting with other children, teachers and the environment. Furthermore, children were attaining new knowledge while they were doing body movement activities, assessing and applying them to actual activities. Conclusion/Implications: This study is investigated a cyclic learning-based early childhood science education program using physical motion, which has significance in systematic and practical early childhood centered education for young children.
