  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the structure and type of prospective elementary school teachers' scientific hypotheses generated on zoological tasks. The subjects were 18 prospective elementary school teachers. Four zoological hypothesis generation tasks were developed and administered to the subjects. After being presented with the zoological situations of the tasks, the subjects were asked to generate causal questions and scientific hypotheses. The scientific hypotheses were analyzed by the inductive approach. The results of this study showed that the hypotheses contained explicans and explicanda. The explicans were divided into two parts: 'what' and 'how'. In some cases, additional explanations were attached to the 'what' section. In addition, the hypotheses were classified into 9 types. The number of explicanda, the pattern of explicans, and the number of explicans were used as criteria for classification purposes. This study also discussed the implications of these findings for future directions in teaching and teaming in science education.

  • The purpose of this study is to inquire the building process of Pedagogical Content Knowledge of prospective mathematics teachers about the function concepts. For this purpose, We performed the following steps; First, we performed the survey relaying to the prospective mathematics teachers' teaching experiences, capabilities of their error evaluation of the students, and viewpoints about the function concepts. Second, we performed the survey on the subject-matter knowledge about the function concepts and the key items of designing teaching plans about the function concepts. And then, we interviewed the participants to check the results of the surveys and to supplement the necessary contents. The collected data was relatively correlative and analyzed in the process. As a result, we found the followings; First, subject-matter knowledge of prospective mathematics teachers about the function concepts is different depending on the grades. Second, prospective mathematics teachers are building more extended function concepts through the major subjects. Third, the major subjects are important to build the Pedagogical Content Knowledge of function concepts. Fourth, teaching experience plays an important role in transforming subject-matter knowledge of function concepts to Pedagogical Content Knowledge of it. Fifth, building the Pedagogical Content Knowledge means transferring the teacher's viewpoint from himself/herself to the learner.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the prospective teachers' perception of food risk with the goal of providing the ways to improve their knowledge and perception of food risk. A self-administered questionnaire was developed and offered to 307 freshman and sophomore in an elementary teacher-cultivating university located in Seoul. The collected data were analyzed in terms of frequencies, cross tabulation analysis, t-test and ANONA with a deviation level of 5% using SPSS 15.0. The results of this research were as follows: 'Taste' was identified as an important factor for purchasing food (54.4%), and 'Manufacture date/expiration date' (67.0%) was checked first before food was purchased. The respondants viewed food additives (66.8%) followed by environmental contaminants (17.6%) as the most dangerous factors for food consumption. Even though they did not know the actual level of risk these factors posed to food, they still perceived them as dangerous. Most of them did not have any educational experiences on food risk, and if any, their sources of information were TV (46.6%) and the internet (19.5%). And, they did want to have information on food risk through TV, radio (41.1%) and the internet(16.4%). Based on the above results, the subjects who have great potential to influence children appeared not to have sound knowledge or a balanced perception of food risks. Therefore, systematic educational opportunities for prospective teachers should be provided to promote food risk communication.

  • The purpose of this study was to conduct a course entitled 'Teaching practice' applying Problem Based Learning(hereafter PBL) for perspective Home Economics teachers to explore the applicability of PBL to the course. A course entitled 'Teaching practice' was carried out for 17 undergraduate students from the 2nd of March till 11th of June in 2014. Pre- and post-tests to measure teacher disposition were performed to investigate the effectiveness of the course applying PBL. Three questions for PBL were developed, were determined after obtaining verification of the questions from 5 experts, and were used for the course entitled 'Teaching practice'; Developing teaching-learning plan, establishing plan for homeroom class management, and designing assessment of Technology & Home Economics. The processes of PBL include defining the problem, planning problem solutions, reassessing the problem, identifying possible solutions, and performance presentation. Procedures for solving one problem of PBL took 4 weeks and teacher disposition assessment for effectiveness of PBL was carried out for pre- and post tests. The reflection journal showed that even though it was their first experience of PBL, instructor's feedback, group activities, and individual activities were helpful for solving the problems of PBL. The result of dependent t-test for paired samples revealed significant differences between the pre- and post tests, which means that there was effectiveness of the course applying to PBL on teacher disposition of prospective Home Economics teachers.
