A Study on the Role of Pivots in Bayesian Statistics

  • The concept of pivot has been widely used in various classical inferences. In this paper, it is proved by use of pivotal quantities that the Bayesian inferences can be arrived at the same results of classical inferences for the location-scale parameters models under the assumption of non-informative prior distributions. Some theorems are proposed in which the posterior distribution and the sampling distribution of a pivotal quantity coincide. The theorems are applied illustratively to some statistical models.

  • Bayes estimation of parameters is considered for two independent exponential distributions with ordered means. Order restricted Bayes estimators for means are obtained with respect to inverted gamma, noninformative prior and uniform prior distributions, and their asymptotic properties are established. It is shown that the maximum likelihood estimator, restricted maximum likelihood estimator, unrestricted Bayes estimator, and restricted Bayes estimator of the mean are all consistent and have the same limiting distribution. These estimators are compared with the corresponding unrestricted Bayes estimators by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • In this paper, we deal with the problem for testing homogeneity of coecients of variation in several normal distributions. We propose Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures based on the Bayes factor under noninformative prior. The noninformative prior is usually improper which yields a calibration problem that makes the Bayes factor to be dened up to a multiplicative constant. So we propose the objective Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures based on the fractional Bayes factor and the intrinsic Bayes factor under the reference prior. Simulation study and a real data example are provided.

  • This article deals with the problem of testing the difference of quantiles in exponential distributions. We propose Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures for the difference of two quantiles under the noninformative prior. The noninformative prior is usually improper which yields a calibration problem that makes the Bayes factor to be defined up to a multiplicative constant. So we propose the objective Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures based on the fractional Bayes factor and the intrinsic Bayes factor under the matching prior. Simulation study and a real data example are provided.

  • We have fuzzy hypotheses testing from Bayesian statistics with ideas from fuzzy sets theory to generalize Bayesian methods both for samples of fuzzy data and for prior distributions with non-precise parameters. Appling the principle of agreement index, the posterior odds ratio in the favor of hypotheses $H_0$ is equal to product of the fuzzy odds ratio and the fuzzy likelihood ratio. If the Posterior odds ratio exceeds the grade judgement, we accept the hypothesis $H_0$ for the degree.

Development of Matching Priors for P(X < Y) in Exprnential dlstributions

  • In this paper, matching priors for P(X < Y) are investigated when both distributions are exponential distributions. Two recent approaches for finding noninformative priors are introduced. The first one is the verger and Bernardo's forward and backward reference priors that maximizes the expected Kullback-Liebler Divergence between posterior and prior density. The second one is the matching prior identified by matching the one sided posterior credible interval with the frequentist's desired confidence level. The general forms of the second- order matching prior are presented so that the one sided posterior credible intervals agree with the frequentist's desired confidence levels up to O(n$^{-1}$ ). The frequentist coverage probabilities of confidence sets based on several noninformative priors are compared for small sample sizes via the Monte-Carlo simulation.

  • In this paper, we want to develop objective priors for the common location parameter in two half-t distributions with unequal scale parameters. The half-t distribution is a non-regular class of distribution. One can not develop the reference prior by using the algorithm of Berger of Bernardo (1989). Specially, we derive the reference priors and prove the propriety of joint posterior distribution under the developed priors. Through the simulation study, we show that the proposed reference prior matches the target coverage probabilities in a frequentist sense.
