  • Quantile regression proposed by Koenker and Bassett (1978) is a statistical technique that estimates conditional quantiles. The advantage of using quantile regression is the robustness in response to large outliers compared to ordinary least squares(OLS) regression. A regression tree approach has been applied to OLS problems to fit flexible models. Loh (2002) proposed the GUIDE algorithm that has a negligible selection bias and relatively low computational cost. Quantile regression can be regarded as an analogue of OLS, therefore it can also be applied to GUIDE regression tree method. Chaudhuri and Loh (2002) proposed a nonparametric quantile regression method that blends key features of piecewise polynomial quantile regression and tree-structured regression based on adaptive recursive partitioning. Lee and Lee (2006) investigated wage determinants in the Korean labor market using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS). Following Lee and Lee, we fit three kinds of quantile regression tree models to KLIPS data with respect to the quantiles, 0.05, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, and 0.95. Among the three models, multiple linear piecewise quantile regression model forms the shortest tree structure, while the piecewise constant quantile regression model has a deeper tree structure with more terminal nodes in general. Age, gender, marriage status, and education seem to be the determinants of the wage level throughout the quantiles; in addition, education experience appears as the important determinant of the wage level in the highly paid group.

  • A new modified singular value decomposition method, piecewise polynomial truncated SVD (PPTSVD), which was originally developed to identify discontinuity of the earth's radial density function, has been used for large solvent peak suppression and noise elimination in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal processing. PPTSVD consists of two algorithms of truncated SVD (TSVD) and L₁ problems. In TSVD, some unwanted large solvent peaks and noise are suppressed with a certain soft threshold value, whereas signal and noise in raw data are resolved and eliminated in L₁ problems. These two algorithms were systematically programmed to produce high quality of NMR spectra, including a better solvent peak suppression with good spectral line shapes and better noise suppression with a higher signal to noise ratio value up to 27% spectral enhancement, which is applicable to multidimensional NMR data processing.

  • The performance of bolted side-plated (BSP) beams is affected by the degree of transverse partial interaction, which is a result of the interfacial slip caused by transverse shear transfer between the bolted steel plates and the reinforced concrete beams. However, explicit formulae for the transverse shear transfer profile have yet to be derived. In this paper, a simplified piecewise linear shear transfer model was proposed based on force superposition principle and simplification of shear transfer profiles derived from a previous numerical study. The magnitude of shear transfer was determined by force equilibrium and displacement compatibility condition. A set of design formulae for BSP beams under several basic load cases was also derived. Then the model was verified by test results. A worked example was also provided to illustrate the application of the proposed design formulae. This paper sheds some light on the shear force transfer mechanism of anchor bolts in BSP beams, and offers a practical method to evaluate the influence of transverse partial interaction in strengthening design.

  • Non-planar screens such as cylinder and sphere shaped screens are widely used for high-resolution immersive visualization environments. An existing method employs quadric matrix that maps an image onto a curved screen. However if the shape of the screen changes or moves, the quadric matrix will not be valid. In this paper, we assume that the screen is a quadric shape and the screen movement or change are relatively small. Then we propose to use a piecewise planar approximations for the screen to compensate for the geometric distortion on a non-planar screen. We demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method through experiments.

  • Reversible image watermarking, a type of digital data hiding, is capable of recovering the original image and extracting the hidden message with precision. A number of reversible algorithms have been proposed to achieve a high embedding capacity and a low distortion. While numerous algorithms for the achievement of a favorable performance regarding a small embedding capacity exist, the main goal of this paper is the achievement of a more favorable performance regarding a larger embedding capacity and a lower distortion. This paper therefore proposes a reversible data hiding algorithm for which a novel piecewise 2D auto-regression (P2AR) predictor that is based on a rhombus-embedding scheme is used. In addition, a minimum description length (MDL) approach is applied to remove the outlier pixels from a training set so that the effect of a multiple linear regression can be maximized. The experiment results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed method is superior to those of previous methods.

  • In this paper, we show two ways of the time reparametrization of piecewise Pythagorean-hodograph $C^1$ Hermite interpolants. One is the time reparametrization with no shape change, and the other is that with shape change. We show that the first reparametrization does not depend on the boundary data and that it is uniquely determined by the size of parameter domain, up to the general cases. We empirically show that the second parametrization can cause the change of the shape of interpolant.

  • This paper provides a new approach to analyze the stability of a general multi-link TCP Vegas, which is a kind of feedback-based congestion algorithm. Whereas the conventional approaches use the approximately linearized model of the TCP Vegas along equilibrium pints, this approach models a multi-link TCP Vegas network in the form of a piecewise linear multiple time-delay system. And then, based on the exactly characterized dynamic model, this paper presents a new stability criterion via a piecewise and multiple delay-dependent Lyapunov-Krasovskii function. Especially, the resulting stability criterion is formulated in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs).

  • This paper develops a stability analysis and controller synthesis methodology for a continuous-time affine Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with parametric uncertainties. Affine T-S fuzzy system can be an advantage because it may be able to approximate nonlinear functions to high accuracy with fewer rules than the homogeneous T-S fuzzy systems with linear consequents only. The analysis is based on Lyapunov functions that are continuous and piecewise quadratic. The search for a piecewise quadratic Lyapunov function can be represented in terms of bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs). A simulation example is given to illustrate the application of the proposed method.
