Analysis of Temperature Effects on Microbial Growth Parameters and Estimation of Food Shelf Life with Confidence Band

  • As a way to account for the variability of the primary model parameters in the secondary modeling of microbial growth, three different regression approaches were compared in determining the confidence interval of the temperature-dependent primary model parameters and the estimated microbial growth during storage: bootstrapped regression with all the individual primary model parameter values; bootstrapped regression with average values at each temperature; and simple regression with regression lines of 2.5% and 97.5% percentile values. Temperature dependences of converted parameters (log $q_o$, ${\mu}_{max}^{1/2}$, log $N_{max}$) of hypothetical initial physiological state, maximum specific growth rate, and maximum cell density in Baranyi's model were subjected to the regression by quadratic, linear, and linear function, respectively. With an advantage of extracting the primary model parameters instantaneously at any temperature by using mathematical functions, regression lines of 2.5% and 97.5% percentile values were capable of accounting for variation in experimental data of microbial growth under constant and fluctuating temperature conditions.

  • From ancient times, the diagnosis method of the oriental medicine has been performed by curing diseases by means of rectifying and adjusting the unbalance in the physiological function of the five viscera and the six bowels of a human body. Diseases have been diagnosed by the condition of blood circulation that cycles a human body through blood vessels by dint of the vitality of the heart. Based on such a systematic pulse diagnosis method, the article presents parameters that will be beneficial to clinical application on the basis of its analysis of the filtering for eliminating noises from pulse signals inputted from sensor group, the digital hardware dealing with signals necessary for recognition algorithm, and the structure of diagnosis algorithm and components of pulse waveform.

  • Total saponin from Korean red ginseng changed thermodynamic parameters of membranes from dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and ghost erythrocytes of human. In liposomes from DPPC, temperature of the main transition (Lb'-La) in liquid-crystalline phase increases by 0.2$^{\circ}C$ in average, but enthalpy does not change. Total saponin at a concentration of smaller than $10^5$% "stabilizes" the timid bilayers. At larger than 0.07 of saponin/DPPC ratio, saponin leads to an exclusion of the bound lipid molecules from the main phase transition into lamella liquid crystalline La-phase. Total saponin influences specifically all erythrocyte membrane transitions in a concentration-dependent manner, i.e. on the structures of all the main membrane skeleton proteins. A high structural specificity of saponin with membrane proteins, could be a base of specificity of physiological response of not only erythrocytes, but also other cells.her cells.

아토피와 알러지에 대한 한의학적 약물치료의 혈액면역학적 개선효과 (Effects of Herbal Prescriptions on the Immunological Parameter in Patients with Atopic & Allergic Diseases; Clinical Observational Study)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of several herbal prescriptions in patients with allergy or atopic disease, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma and allergy rhinitis and others, on the blood immunological parameters and to verify the safety of long-term use of herbal medicine. Eighty one patients with allergy or atopy disease who taken herbal medicine at least for 2 months were compared with patients who taken same medicine with no allergy & atopy disease (n=14) and normal healthy subjects (n=22). According to the comparison of immunological parameters change, the data showed that herbal medicine decreased IgE (P=0.003), Eosinophil ratio (P<0.001) and count (P<0.001) of White Blood Cell (WBC) and did not affect to the liver cell enzymes in blood. This results indicated that herbal medicine decreased immune hypersensitivity and improved chronic inflammation related to blood immunological parameters of allergy or atopy diseases. In addition, herbal medicine seemed to be safe to the liver function for long-term use.

졸음운전의 자동 검출 및 각성 시스템 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development of Automatic Detection and Warning system while Drowsy Driving)

  • Driving is a complex vigilance task that includes improper lookout, excessive speed and inattention. The primary objective of this research is to detect driver drowsiness so that the driver can be alerted to an impending traffic accident in performance. We developed the automatic detection and warning system during drowsy driving. A drowsiness detection system must be able to monitor driver status and detect the detrimental changes of a driver performance. Eyeblink has been found to be a reliable factor of drowsiness detection in earlier studies. As an additional parameter, we also considered the yawning which often occurs in a low vigilance state and predicts the drowsy state. We used a computer vision method to extract the eyeblink and yawning in the face image sequences. When the drowsy state was detected, the driver was refreshed by alarming device and menthol scent generator after deciding the warning level by fuzzy logic. For the evaluation of our system, we measured the physiological parameters such as EOG and EEG. The results indicated that it is possible to detect and alert the driver drowsiness temporarily or continuously by using our system.

Control of Asymmetric Cell Divisions during Root Ground Tissue Maturation

  • Controlling the production of diverse cell/tissue types is essential for the development of multicellular organisms such as animals and plants. The Arabidopsis thaliana root, which contains distinct cells/tissues along longitudinal and radial axes, has served as an elegant model to investigate how genetic programs and environmental signals interact to produce different cell/tissue types. In the root, a series of asymmetric cell divisions (ACDs) give rise to three ground tissue layers at maturity (endodermis, middle cortex, and cortex). Because the middle cortex is formed by a periclinal (parallel to the axis) ACD of the endodermis around 7 to 14 days post-germination, middle cortex formation is used as a parameter to assess maturation of the root ground tissue. Molecular, genetic, and physiological studies have revealed that the control of the timing and extent of middle cortex formation during root maturation relies on the interaction of plant hormones and transcription factors. In particular, abscisic acid and gibberellin act synergistically to regulate the timing and extent of middle cortex formation, unlike their typical antagonism. The SHORT-ROOT, SCARECROW, SCARECROW-LIKE 3, and DELLA transcription factors, all of which belong to the plant-specific GRAS family, play key roles in the regulation of middle cortex formation. Recently, two additional transcription factors, SEUSS and GA- AND ABA-RESPONSIVE ZINC FINGER, have also been characterized during ground tissue maturation. In this review, we provide a detailed account of the regulatory networks that control the timing and extent of middle cortex formation during post-embryonic root development.

Non-Contact Heart Rate Monitoring from Face Video Utilizing Color Intensity

  • Heart Rate is a crucial physiological parameter that provides basic information about the state of the human body in the cardiovascular system, as well as in medical diagnostics and fitness assessments. At present day, it has been demonstrated that facial video-based photoplethysmographic signal captured using a low-cost RGB camera is possible to retrieve remote heart rate. Traditional heart rate measurement is mostly obtained by direct contact with the human body, therefore, it can result inconvenient for long-term measurement due to the discomfort that it causes to the subject. In this paper, we propose a non-contact-based remote heart rate measuring approach of the subject which depends on the color intensity variation of the subject's facial skin. The proposed method is applied in two regions of the subject's face, forehead and cheeks. For this, three different algorithms are used to measure the heart rate. i.e., Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The average accuracy for the three algorithms utilizing the proposed method was 89.25% in both regions. It is also noteworthy that the FastICA algorithm showed a higher average accuracy of more than 92% in both regions. The proposed method obtained 1.94% higher average accuracy than the traditional method based on average color value.

Drought Tolerance in Italian Ryegrass is Associated with Genetic Divergence, Water Relation, Photosynthetic Efficiency and Oxidative Stress Responses

  • Drought stress is a condition that occurs frequently in the field, it reduces of the agricultural yield of field crops. The aim of the study was to screen drought-adapted genotype of Italian rye grass. The experiments were conducted between the two Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) cultivars viz. Hwasan (H) and Kowinearly (KE). The plants were exposed to drought for 14 days. The results suggest that the morphological traits and biomass yield of KE significantly affected by drought stress-induced oxidative stress as the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) level was induced, while these parameters were unchanged or less affected in H. Furthermore, the cultivar H showed better adaptation by maintaining several physiological parameter including photosystem-II (Fv/Fm), water use efficiency (WUE) and relative water content (RWC%) level in response to drought stress. These results indicate that the cultivar H shows improved drought tolerance by generic variation, improving photosynthetic efficiency and reducing oxidative stress damages under drought stress. These findings can be useful to the breeder and farmer for improving drought tolerance in Italian rye grass through breeding programs.

장관 내 국소 섭취증가 병소의 감별에 있어 추가 지연 F-18 FDG PET/CT의 임상적 유용성 (The Clinical Value of Dual Time Point F-18 FDG PET/CT Imaging for the Differentiation of Colonic Focal Uptake Lesions)

  • 목적: $^{18}$F-FDG PET/CT는 다양한 장관내 악성 종양을 발견하는데 높은 민감도를 보이고 있다. 하지만 $^{18}$F-FDG가 다양한 형태로 장관 내 생리적, 병리적 섭취증가를 보이기 때문에 그 특이도는 낮다. 이 연구는 장관 내 국소적인 $^{18}$F-FDG 섭취증가를 보일 때 생리적 섭취와 병리적 섭취를 감별하는 데 있어 추가 지연(dual time point) $^{18}$F-FDG PET/CT의 임상적 유용성을 알아보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 2007년 1월부터 2008년 6월까지 장관 내 국소적인 섭취증가를 보여 추가 지연 촬영 $^{18}$F-FDG PET/CT를 실시한 132명(남:여=77:55, 나이 62.8$\pm$11.6세)을 대상으로 하였다. $^{18}$F-FDG 정맥 주사 후 50-60분 후에 조기 영상을 촬영하였고, 정맥 주사 후 4-5시간에 국소 섭취 증가 부위를 포함하고 있는 복부 부위에 대해 추가 지연 촬영을 실시하였다. 초기 영상에서 보였던 국소적 섭취가 지연 영상에서 보이지 않거나 이동하였을 경우에는 생리적 섭취증가로 간주하였고, 지연 영상에서 지속적으로 관찰되는 섭취증가에 대해서는 대장내시경과 병리조직 검사를 실시하였다. 지연 영상에서 지속적으로 관찰되는 장관 내 섭취에 대해서는 각각 Suvmax값과 조기 영상과 지연 영상의 Syvmax값의 차이($\Delta$%Suvmax)를 계산하였다. 결과: 132명의 환자에서 153개의 국소적 섭취증가병소를 관찰할 수 있었다. 이 중 72개 병소에서는 지연 영상에서 섭취 증가가 사라져 생리적 섭취로 판단할 수 있었다. 조기 영상에서만 보였던 생리적 섭취는 맹장을 포함한 오름 결장에서 가장 많이 관찰되었다. 지연 영상에서도 지속적으로 섭취증가를 보인 81개 병소에서 61개는 악성 종양으로 확진되었고, 14개는 양성 질환으로 확인 되었다. 나머지 6개의 병소는 대장내시경에서 특이소견을 보이지 않아 생리적 섭취로 확인되었다. 악성 종양은 $\Delta$%Suvmax가 20.8%$\pm$18.7%로 통계적으로 유의하게 증가하였고, 반대로 리 악성에서는 3.7%$\pm$24.2%로 감소하였다. 가장 유용한 진단적 가치를 주는 요소는 $\Delta$%Suvmax 임을 확인하였고, 악성과 비악성 질환을 감별하는데 임계수를 -5%로 정하였을 때 가장 좋은 민감도, 특이도, 정확도를 보였다. 결론: $^{18}$F-FDG PET/CT를 이용한 추가 지연 촬영은 생리적 섭취와 병리적 섭취를 감별하는데 있어 검사의 특이도를 높이고 불필요한 검사를 줄일 수 있는 유용한 비침습적 방법으로 생각된다.

수온과 용존산소 변화에 따른 미더덕 Styela clava의 생존율 및 생리적 반응 (Effect of Temperature and Dissolved Oxygen on the Survival Rate and Physiological Response of the Warty Sea Squirt Styela clava)

  • 미더덕의 집단폐사가 주로 발생하는 여름철 고수온 및 빈산소에 의한 생물학적 지표를 찾아 대량폐사 원인구명을 위한 기초자료로 활용하기 위하여 수온상승 및 용존산소농도 감소에 따른 미더덕의 생존율, 생리적 반응 및 조직학적 변화 등을 조사하였다. 수온상승에 따른 생존율은 수온 $23^{\circ}C$에서 63.3%, $26^{\circ}C$에서 56.6%였으며, 수온 $29^{\circ}C$에서 노출 6일째 모두 사망하여 노출 6일 동안의 반수치사 수온은(6day-$LT^{50}$)은 $24.58^{\circ}C$ ($19.48{\sim}35.48^{\circ}C$)였다. 용존산소 농도 감소에 따른 생존율은 노출 11일째 용존산소농도 $4.0mg\;L^{-1}$에서 20%였으며, $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$에서는 모두 사망하였고, 반수치사 용존산소 농도 (11day-$LC^{50}$)는 $3.88mg\;L^{-1}$($3.29{\sim}4.57mg\;L^{-1}$)였다. 산소소비율과 암모니아질소 배설률은 임계수온 및 임계용존산소 농도이하에서 감소하였다. 수온 상승 및 용존산소 농도 감소에 따른 미더덕의 새낭, 소화관 및 피낭의 병리조직학적 결과는 각 기관을 구성하고 있는 상피세포층의 증식, 응축 및 괴사, 식세포 및 혈구침윤, 섬모탈락, 근섬유 변성 등의 변성이 공통적으로 관찰되었다. 미더덕은 수온 $24^{\circ}C$이상, 용존산소 $3.8mg\;L^{-1}$이하에서 조직학적 병변, 대사율 감소 등으로 환경변화에 매우 민감한 생물이므로 여름철에 양성되고 있는 미더덕의 양식장관리에 세심한 관리가 요구된다.
