  • This study analyzed the 2009 revised curriculum 6th grade math geometric domain and developed virtual operation tool contents based RME theory. These materials were examine to find out how to effect on the spatial sense and mathematical attitudes by applying it to teach the 6th grade students. The results were as follows. First, it is more effective for improving spatial sense to study mathematics based RME theory with virtual operation tool contents than normal one. This means that mathematics study based RME theory with virtual operation contents overcomes the limitations of flat learning environment. And it is great educational and effective method for students to improve their spatial sense. Second, it is more effective for improving mathematical attitudes to study mathematics based RME theory with virtual operation tool contents than normal one. This means that Mathematics study based RME theory with virtual operation contents makes student more participate learning actively. It helps the students who have passive learning habits to have self-directed learning habits, ability to cooperation and communicate. The results of this study suggest that mathematics study based RME theory is very helpful for student to improve their spatial sense and have positive effect on self-concept in mathematics, attitudes toward mathematics and improving study habits in mathematical attitudes.

  • This study is intended to establish and apply a program created with RME for mathematising instruction and learning and identify how it influences on the mathematical thinking process in the field. In order to deal with this study inquiries, related theories have been analyzed establishing a program for mathematising instruction and learning method based on a model of them and RME theory principles and re-organizing education courses for instruction on the fields concerned. Study subjects were limited to two classes consisting of fifth graders in S elementary school located in the city of Daegu and divided them in an experiment group and a control group. An experiment group was given a mathematising learning method applied with RME, while a control group had a class with regular methods of learning and instruction during the period of experiment. As a summary of aforementioned results of the study, mathematising learning method applied with RME had an effect on improving mathematical thinking ability for students and also on promoting mathematising outcome through a repetitive experience in each procedure obtained on a regular basis.

  • The undergraduate curriculum in differential equations has undergone important changes in favor of the visual and numerical aspects of the course primarily because of recent technological advances. Yet, research findings that have analyzed students' thinking and understanding in a reformed setting are still lacking. This paper discusses an ongoing developmental research effort to adapt the instructional design perspective of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) to the teaching and learning of differential equations at Ewha Womans University. The RME theory based on the design heuristic using context problems and modeling was developed for primary school mathematics. However, the analysis of this study indicates that a RME design for a differential equations course can be successfully adapted to the university level.

  • Recently, there have been many assessment researches in Korea. The aim of this study is to reflect on framework for mathematics assessment in RME which is based on Jan de Lange's assessment theory and to induce desirable directions for our mathematics assessment in nation-level and class-level. In order to attain these purposes, the present paper reflects the philosophy of RME, Jan de Lange's framework for mathematics assessment, assessment framework of the unit 'Side Seeing', one of Mathematics in Context textbook series, as an exemplar to which Jan de Lange's framework is applied. Based on these reflections, it is discussed that it needs to specify achievement standards presented in mathematics curriculum more particularly in order to have framework including mathematical abilities of level 2 and level 3 in Jan de Lange's framework appropriate to our situations, to apply the framework to nation-level and class-level consistently, and to enhance abilities of teachers and student teachers for mathematics assessment.

  • Recently, there have been many changes in researches of mathematics education. There is a growing number of researchers who are interested in empirical researches. According to the these changes, there is also an emphasis on methodology of mathematics education. This means that many researchers try to conduct an research using scientific approach. Therefore, new types of research developing mathematics courses recently has evolved as follows: teaching experiment, hypothetical loaming trajectory, design science, developmental research. The aim of this study is to reflect on developmental research in RME and to induce desirable directions for developing our mathematics courses. In order to attain these purposes, the present paper reflects the philosophy of RME, aim, procedure, data collection, data analysis, and justification of developmental research with illustrating a exemplar Based on these reflections, it is discussed that it needs to construct the mathematics curriculum connecting theory and practice in mathematics education, to report the process of developing mathematics courses faithfully, and to develop real mathematics courses after conducting basic developmental researches in order to take scientific app- roaches for developing mathematics courses.

  • The purpose of the study is to examine the phenomenon presented the process of problem solving activities of students with the mathematical context information accompanied problem based on Freudenthal's mathematizing theory and Realistic Mathematics Educations about cognitive and emotional aspects. In conclusion, taking a look at the results of study, open-ended contextual problem was had to offer in order to pull out various solutions. Teachers should help students develop their own methods, discuss their methods with others' and reinvent formal mathematics and its constructive process under the guidance of the teachers.

  • Current up-to-date courses of study put emphasis on raising creative students. However, the cramming methods of teaching mathematics in the school seems far from the creativity and the number of students who feels mathematics difficult is increasing. To overcome this situation, the government proposed 'the mathematics education using storytelling', which leads to lots of developments of mathematics using serious game in many areas. However most of the current serious games couldn't do away with the deductive framework of mathematics, which makes it impossible to achieve the purpose of raising creative students. This is because existing mathematics serious games have not deeply contemplated many aspects such as the purpose and theories of teaching and teaching mathematics. Therefore, in order to overcome the limitations of cramming methods in existing mathematics educations, this research proposes the new method of developing serious game contents for elementary geometry that is useful to improve mathematical intuition, based on RME, the theory of teaching/learning mathematics.

  • This study, to effectively teach the concepts, principles and problem solving ability of the 2nd graders' learning of numbers and operations, offers realistic problem situation and focuses on the learning based on 'mathematization', one of the most important principles of RME (Realistic Mathematics Education) which is the mathematics education trend of Netherlands influenced by Freudenthal's theory. The instruction is applied to forty-one students of the 2nd grader for six weeks in twelve series in an elementary school, located in Seoul. To investigate the effects of the mathematising experience instruction for improving mathematical abilities, the group takes tests before and after the instruction. Also the qualitative analysis on the students' mathematising aspects through students' output at the instruction process is taken into account to evaluate the instruction's effects. The result shows that the mathematising experience instruction for improving mathematical abilities is proved to improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts and principles and their problem solving ability in learning numbers and operations after carrying out this instruction. Also the result indicates that students' mathematising aspects are mostly horizontal and vertical mathematization.
