Changes in England society's perception of mathematics in the 19th century through the satirical magazine Punch: Focusing on the expansion of mathematics tests and changes in demand for mathematics education (풍자 잡지 「펀치」를 통해 본 19세기 영국 사회의 수학에 대한 인식 변화 : 수학 시험의 확대와 수학 교육의 수요 변화를 중심으로)

  • This paper aims to examine how the public perception of mathematics changed in England in the 19th century. As rapid industrial and social developments took place in the 19th century, the educational environment underwent great changes, and the value and public perception of mathematics also changed. Mathematics took a new position in the terrain of educational reform in the late 19th century. In this study, I analyzed the actual condition of mathematics education in elementary and secondary schools, popular educational institutions, and universities in England in the first half, middle, and second half of the 19th century, and compared what values and usefulness of mathematics education were justified in each institution. I also examined how satirical magazine Punch satirized the public understanding or view on mathematics at each period. It is to be hoped that this study will have significant implications for raising the public's positive perception of mathematics in modern society.

  • After reviewing China's appearance and research on the Math open-ended problems, together with the application of those problems in mathematics test of Shanghai Senior Middle School Entrance Exams (SSMSEE) since 1999, this paper points out the difficulty in establishing an evaluation system for such problem. Through comparative study, the paper gives an operational definition of open-ended problem, and it attempts to establish an evaluation system and non-systematic competence targets that are appropriate to Math open-ended problems. Meanwhile, it describes the performance feature of those targets. By applying the standard international grading system of difficulty, it discusses the elements of difficulty in Math open-ended problems, and puts forward an evaluation as well as a level-of-difficulty forecasting system that is appropriate to the Middle School Entrance Exam.

  • This paper shows how the social tradition and belief of korea on education affects teachers and students and learning. 1 Interview with teacher. During surveying this teacher's class, we knowed that the teacher have accentuated algorism loaming and preparation fur external examination in math class. Teacher's beliefs about mathematics have a strong effect on the method of class and the performance of problem solving 2. Interview with students and short test. 1) Students usually had fine ability of calculation for number. But Many pupils didn't know the meaning of the operations. 2) The most of pupils are good at routine math problem solving but when the question whose the condition don't meet was given, they experienced difficulties.3.Korean sociocultural specialty on education: The korean place high emphasis on education and think of education as the means of success. This emphasis can be traced to the Confucian view. 1) tradition on examination culture. 2) the traditional convention of the learning method. Korean sociocultural specialty on education play role of strengthen role learning and algorism class. The important things to education reformation are getting a balance between practice and understanding. we should make changes not only in national dimension but also in math class.

  • We consider the global stability of a general tuberculosis model with two differential infectivity, n classes of latent individuals and mass action incidence. This system exhibits the traditional threshold behavior. There is always a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium state. Depending on the value of the basic reproduction ratio $\mathcal{R}_0$, this state can be either endemic ($\mathcal{R}_0$ > 1), or infection-free ($\mathcal{R}_0{\leq}1$). The global stability of this model is derived through the use of Lyapunov stability theory and LaSalle's invariant set theorem. Both the analytical results and numerical simulations suggest that patients should be strongly encouraged to complete their treatment and sputum examination.

  • The primary school mathematics emphasizes some activities such as visualizing figures, drawing figures and comparing figures from various angles. These activities could be undertaken throughout examination, experiments and exploration of the substantial materials. They could also be undertaken by using the objects found in a daily life informally. The 7th curriculum of mathematics reflects this trend and includes the systematized activities in teaching spatial sense in geometry. However, it still requires more researches on the teaching methodology of spatial sense and the conceptual analysis of spatial sense. In this study, the concept of spatial sense is analyzed and Mackim's 3-levels teaching methodology and Bruner's EIS theory and suggestions are reviewed as a possible teaching methodology of spatial tasks. As a conclusion, this study suggests a teaching-learning methodology of spatial tasks at the levels of 2-GA and 3-Ga of the 7th curriculum of mathematics.

  • In this paper, our primary focus revolves around the examination of a set of fractional stochastic models. Through our investigation, we can establish the presence of a solution and its distinctiveness. Additionally, we employ a moment-based algorithm to estimate the coefficients within these models and provide evidence that these estimations maintain their asymptotic characteristics. To support this claim, we conduct experimental studies using simulations and numerical examples.

  • In this paper, in the last 4 years(2014~2017 school year), we classified the probability and statistical items based on the evaluation scope of the mathematics subject content knowledge which were presented by the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation, and the classified items were analyzed. As a result, First, in order to induce normalization of the probability and statistical curriculum, four assessment field should be evenly distributed. Second, integrated thinking and comprehensive analytical thinking assessment is required. Third, item an epilogue should be used to measure mathematical thinking and logical competence. Fourth, the ratio of the number of items in probability and statistics to the number of that was 7.7%~10.0%, and the ratio according to the item weighting was 5.0%~7.5%. Fifth, it maintains the policy of stabilizing a good the level of difficulty of the items. Finally, probability and statistical assessment should focus on measuring problem solving ability from an inductive point of view.

A Case Study on Gifted Education in Mathematics

  • The Center for Science Gifted Education (CSGE) of Chongju National University of Education was established in 1998 with the financial support of the Korea. Science & Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). In fact, we had prepared mathematics and science gifted education program beginning in 1997. It was possible due to the commitment of faculty members with an interest in gifted education. Now we have 5 classes in Mathematics, two of which are fundamental, one of which is a strengthened second-grade class gifted elementary school students, and one a fundamental class, and one a strengthened class for gifted middle school students in Chungbuk province. Each class consists of 16 students selected by a rigorous examination and filtering process. Also we have a mentoring system for particularly gifted students in mathematics. We have a number of programs for Super-Saturday, Summer School, Winter School, and Mathematics and Science Gifted Camp. Each program is suitable for 90 or 180 minutes of class time. The types of tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving tasks. Levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be further divided into grade 5 and under, grade 6, and grade 7 and over. Also levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be divided into the level of lower than grade 5, level of grade 6, and level of more than grade 7.   • This paper is a comprehensive study of mathematics education in the Chosun Dynasty. The basis of this work relies on actual historical records from the period. As shown in the records, mathematics education during the Chosun Dynasty remained at the level of basic arithmetics. The arithmeticians of the Chosun Dynasty did not have an understanding of more complex mathematical thought. But the simple arithmetics of the Chosun Dynasty facilitated the building up of a unique merchant 'middle class.' So this paper examines the development of mathematics in the Chosun Dynasty through middle class. Although the Chosun Dynasty arithmetics occupy a significant part of mathematics history, this paper details why their thought did not evaluate more advanced mathematical theories.

  • This study purported to develop the learning materials for the optional activities of mathematics, apply them to the students, and examine the effect on the learner's interest and attitude to mathematics. In order to conduct this study, the learning materials for the mathematics optional activities were developed according to the units of grade 8-Ga and the developed learning materials of the mathematics optional activities were inputted in two classes for 18 units after the second grade middle school students in Daejeon area received the questionnaire regarding the learning attitude and the interest in the mathematics. After that, the questionnaire regarding the learning attitude and the interest in the mathematics and the examination regarding the response to the application of the learning materials for mathematics optional activities were conducted and did t-test. The results of the study as follows : First The learning materials applied exciting games for mathematics optional activities aroused interest in mathematics and made the learners have confidence in mathematics learning. Second, There was affirmative change in the interest and attitude to the mathematics learning with the application of the mathematics optional learning materials. Third The leaning materials of the mathematics optional activities made the learners think mathematical questions connected with the real life and try various ways to solve the questions. Here are some suggestions to study the development of the learning materials such as story, game, quiz and craft. First it is necessary to develop the learning materials applied the games or the real life matters connected with mathematics for all grade middle school students and use them in the mathematics optional activities. Second, many students feel a great interest in animation. moving picture, sound graphic, etc. If the multimedia learning materials included the real life matters or the games are developed, the learners will feel more interest in mathematics. Third, the systematic and economical support is continuously needed in order that teachers are given much time to study and the opportunity to attend the training course for the understanding of the optional activities and the development of the various learning materials.
