  • Many students have dualistic beliefs about mathematics and its learning- for example, there is always just one right answer in mathematics and their role in the classroom is receiving and absorbing knowledge from teacher and textbook. This article investigated some epistemic implications and limitations of common mathematics teaching practices, which often present mathematical facts(or procedures) and treat students' errors in a certain and absolute way. Langer and Piper's (1987) experiment and Oliveira et al.'s (2012) study suggested that presenting knowledge in conditional language which allows uncertainty can foster students' productive epistemological beliefs. Changing the focus and patterns of classroom communication about students' errors could help students to overcome their dualistic beliefs. This discussion will contribute to analyze the implicit epistemic messages conveyed by mathematics instructions and to investigate teaching strategies for stimulating students' epistemic development in mathematics.

  • Since 2005 KICE-TLC has focused on the development of supporting programs for teaching consultation and pedagogical content knowledge(PCK). The purpose of this year's research was to explore types of pedagogical content knowledge(PCK, hereafter) for effective teaching mathematics topics drawn from the amended national mathematics curriculum announced in February, 2007. Based on this year's PCK research, we will develop mathematics teaching consulting program from 2009 research by field testing of developed mathematics PCK. The major source of data for this study was transcripts of audiotapes of the group discussions that took place during the regular weekly meetings where we compared and analyzed three teachers' classes. We also conducted open-ended interviews with the three teachers and collected reflective notes written by participants. This research provided teachers with an opportunity to think about what is important in the teaching of a topic and why, and to consider possibilities for future development. This research highlights the importance of teacher meetings where teachers share their expertises and insights through reflection and dialogue. By introducing the concept of PCK, examining, analyzing and modelling it in pre-service and in-service teacher education practice, we can contribute to extend teachers' professional learning. Finally, just like quality student learning, quality teaching and teacher education practices require critical reflection and careful scaffolding.

  • In this paper, we give descriptions that the choices made in the Knowledge modelling or representation in Computer Evironments can modify the meaning of this knowledge through a process similar to that of the didactical transpostion. Thus, they are likely to have effects on learning. These problems and phenomena are consequences of general constraints of computer and an algorithms built-in computers. Students may not learn the knowledge intended by teacher. Teacher is always on the alert for the changable mathematical knowledge in computer-based environments. It is an important role of teachers in new teaching and learning environment.

  • The study aims to compare between two lectures of elementary mathematics education in United States and Korea based on the Ball et al.'s classification of mathematical knowledge for teaching. The lecturers are a professor of University in United States and me. In both lectures, subjects and contents of lectures are much similar but there are many different things. And the differences are mainly due to the area of pedagogical content knowledge, especially either knowledge of content and students or knowledge of content and teaching. Also the different courses of both universities are one of important causes of the differences. The study will be able to contribute to the studies on the improvement of our course, elementary mathematics education.

  • On the standards or elements of teaching evaluation, the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation(KICE) has carried out the following research such as : 1) development of the standards on teaching evaluation between 2004 and 2006, and 2) investigation on the elements of Teacher Knowledge. The purposes of development of evaluation standards for mathematics teaching through those studies were to improve not only mathematics teachers' professionalism but also their own teaching methods or strategies. In this study, the standards were revised and modified by analyzing the results of those studies focused on the knowledge of subject matter knowledge, knowledge of learners' understanding, teaching and learning methods and assessments, and teaching contexts. For this purpose, according to those evaluation domains of each teacher knowledge, elements on teaching evaluation focused on the teacher's knowledge were established using the instructional evaluation framework, which is developed in this study, including the four areas of knowledge obtaining, instructional planning, instructional implementation, and instructional reflection. In this study, 1st and 2nd pilot studies was accomplished for revising evaluation standards and as a result, the procedure for implementing mathematics teaching using evaluation standards was changed to evaluate teachers own teaching using the standards focused on instructional reflection and according to the degree of satisfaction on reflecting their own teaching, standards on knowledge obtaining, instructional planning, instructional implementation would be utilized. Teacher survey is accomplished two times, by the subject of seven teachers. According ot the result of the first teacher questionnaire which was consisted of the essay type of questions on the degree of understanding the content of standards, the evaluation standards were revised. According ot the result of the second teacher questionnaire which was consisted of the essay type of questions on the application of standards, the evaluation standards were revised finally and the way of how to use the standards efficiently was suggested.

  • Approximation' is one of central conceptions in calculus. A basic conception for explaining 'approximation' is 'tangent', and 'tangent' is a 'line' with special condition. In this study, we will study pedagogically these mathematical knowledge on the ground of a viewpoint on the teaching of secondary geometry, and in connection with these we will suggest the teaching program and the chief end for the probable teaching. For this, we will examine point, line, circle, straight line, tangent line, approximation, and drive meaningfully mathematical knowledge for algebraic operation through the process translating from the above into analytic geometry. And we will construct the stream line of mathematical knowledge for approximation from a view of modern mathematics. This study help mathematics teachers to promote the pedagogical content knowledge, and to provide the basis for development of teaching model guiding the mathematical knowledge. Moreover, this study help students to recognize that mathematics is a systematic discipline and school mathematics are activities constructed under a fixed purpose.

  • This paper introduces some theories that can be effectively applied for the development of teaching and learning mathematics using fuzzy theory developed by Zadeh who defined fuzzy set and knowledge space by Doignon and Falmagne. Especially, we expect that two theories mentioned above are expected to solve the situation that could not be taken care of the present evaluation method.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) about area of plane figure and how it was actualized in instruction. As an exploratory, qualitative, and comparative case study, 2 fifth-grade teachers were selected. Semi-structured interviews with the leachers were conducted in order to explore their PCK with regard to the area of plane figure. A total of 14 mathematics instructions were videotaped and transcribed. Teachers' PCK and classroom teaching practices were analyzed in detail into 3 categories: (a) knowledge of mathematics contents, (b) knowledge of students' understanding, and (c) knowledge of instructional methods. As such, this paper provided a detailed description on each teacher's PCK and her teaching practice. The results showed that teachers' PCK had a significant impact on instruction. The teacher who had rich knowledge about the area of plane figure was able to encourage students to understand the concept of area and to or explore the principles behind formula calculating various areas of plane geometry. The results demonstrated the importance of individual components of PCK as well as that of overall level of PCK. Different aspects of teaching practices were observed as to how the teachers had internalized PCK. On the basis of a close relationship between teachers' PCK and their teaching practice, this paper finally raised several implications for teachers' professional development for effective mathematics instruction.
