  • This paper examines the application of artificial neural networks (ANN) to the response prediction of geometrically nonlinear truss structures. Two types of analysis (deterministic and probabilistic analyses) are considered. A three-layer feed-forward backpropagation network with three input nodes, five hidden layer nodes and two output nodes is firstly developed for the deterministic response analysis. Then a back propagation training algorithm with Bayesian regularization is used to train the network. The trained network is then successfully combined with a direct Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) to perform a probabilistic response analysis of geometrically nonlinear truss structures. Finally, the proposed ANN is applied to predict the response of a geometrically nonlinear truss structure. It is found that the proposed ANN is very efficient and reasonable in predicting the response of geometrically nonlinear truss structures.

  • Beam-to-column connections behaviour plays an important role in the analysis and design of steel and precast concrete structures. The paper presents a computer-based method for geometrically nonlinear frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column connections. The analytical procedure employs modified stability functions to model the effect of axial force on the stiffness of members. The member modified stiffness matrix, and the modified fixed end forces for various loads were found. The linear and nonlinear analyses were applied for two planar steel structures. The method is readily implemented on a computer using matrix structural analysis techniques and is applicable for the efficient nonlinear analysis of frameworks.

  • This Paper presents a geometrically nonlinear behaviors of shell problems by using the three-dimensional curved shell element, which includs large displacements and large rotations. The standard formulation of the geometrically nonlinearity is restricted to the assumption of infinitesmal rotation increments. This standard formulation for the displacement function is numerically improved by considering the second order expansions of Tayler series. The nonlinear behaviors of the single and double curved shells are compared wi th the other results.

  • A geometrically uniform code in AWGN channel has strong symmetry properties such as a) the distance profiles form codewords On C to all other codewords are all the same, and b) all Voronoi regions of codewords in C have the same shape. Such properties make the word error probability of geometrically uniform codes be transparent to the transmitted codeword. In this paper, we extend the geometrically uniform codes in AWGN channel to the geometrical uniform codes in fading channel with multiple transmit antennas.

  • In this paper, geometrically non-linear analysis of a functionally graded simple supported beam is investigated with porosity effect. The material properties of the beam are assumed to vary though height direction according to a prescribed power-law distributions with different porosity models. In the nonlinear kinematic model of the beam, the total Lagrangian approach is used within Timoshenko beam theory. In the solution of the nonlinear problem, the finite element method is used in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method. In the study, the effects of material distribution such as power-law exponents, porosity coefficients, nonlinear effects on the static behavior of functionally graded beams are examined and discussed with porosity effects. The difference between the geometrically linear and nonlinear analysis of functionally graded porous beam is investigated in detail. Also, the effects of the different porosity models on the functionally graded beams are investigated both linear and nonlinear cases.

  • This paper is concerned with a computational approach for topology optimization of geometrically nonlinear structures following specific load-displacement trajectories. In our previous works, attention was paid to stabilize topology optimization involving large displacement and a method called the element connectivity parameterization was developed. Here, we aimed to extend the element connectivity parameterization method to find an optimal geometrically nonlinear structure yielding a specific load-displacement trajectory. In contrast to designing a stiffest structure, the trajectory design problem requires special consideration in topology optimization formulation and solution procedure. Some numerical problems were considered to test the developed element connectivity parameterization based formulation.

  • A finite element based microstructural modeling for the size dependent strengthening of particle reinforced aluminum composites is presented. The model accounts explicitly for the enhanced strength in a discretely defined "punched zone" around the particle in an aluminum matrix composite as a result of geometrically necessary dislocations developed through a CTE mismatch. The density of geometrically necessary dislocations is calculated considering volume fraction of the particle. Results show that predicted flow stresses with different particle size are in good agreement with experiments. It is also shown that 0.2% offset yield stresses increases with smaller particles and larger volume fractions and this length-scale effect on the enhanced strength can be observed by explicitly including GND region around the particle. The strengths predicted with the inclusion of volume fraction in the density equation are slightly lower than those without.

  • This paper presents geometrically nonlinear behavior of cracked fiber reinforced composite beams by using finite element method with and the first shear beam theory. Total Lagrangian approach is used in the nonlinear kinematic relations. The crack model is considered as the rotational spring which separate into two parts of beams. In the nonlinear solution, the Newton-Raphson is used with incremental displacement. The effects of fibre orientation angles, the volume fraction, the crack depth and locations of the cracks on the geometrically nonlinear deflections of fiber reinforced composite are examined and discussed in numerical results. Also, the difference between geometrically linear and nonlinear solutions for the cracked fiber reinforced composite beams.
