Local wall thinning in pipelines affects the structural integrity of industries like nuclear power plants (NPPs). In the present study, a pulsed eddy current (PEC) differential probe with two excitation coils and two Hall-sensors was fabricated to measure the wall thinning in insulated pipelines. A stainless steel test sample was prepared with a thickness that varied from 1 mm to 5 mm and was laminated by plastic insulation to simulate the pipelines in NPPs. The excitation coils in the probe were driven by a rectangular current pulse, the difference of signals from two Hall-sensors was measured as the resultant PEC signal. The peak value of the detected signal is used to describe the wall thinning. The peak value increased as the thickness of the test sample increased. The results were measured at different insulation thicknesses on the sample. Results show that the differential PEC probe has the potential to detect wall thinning in an insulated NPP pipelines.
Aminopropyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane was synthesized by hydrosilylation reaction with hydride terminated polydimethlysiloxane and allyl amine. Polydimethylsiloxane modified urea with isocyanate group was prepared from cyclic trimer of hexamethyldiisocyanate with aminopropyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane. Polydimethylsiloxane modified urea/acrylate resin (PUA) was prepared from the urethane reaction of PU with isocyanate group and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate. PUA structure was analyzed by FTIR and NMR. Coating materials were prepared by mixing PUA, acrylic monomer, photo-initiator, and solvent and coated on PET film to obtain flexible hard coating film by UV irradiation.

Power factor improvement at high temperatures has been a major research topic for the development of skutterudite thermoelectric materials. Here, we attempted to optimize the process parameters for manufacturing skutterudite materials, especially for p-type systems. We focused on the effect of aging time variation to maximize the high-temperature performance of the Ce-filled Fe3CoSb12 skutterudite system. The optimized aging time was concluded to be a key parameter for the formation of single-phase nanostructures in this p-type skutterudite system. The optimized condition was effective in reducing the bipolar effect at high temperature ranges by increasing the carrier concentration in the p-type system. To confirm the conclusions, the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor were measured. The results matched well with the microstructure and with those of an XRD analysis performed for the system.
To shield the radiation, we can make use of various materials, but the scattered rays can be caused by the shielding materials. The degree of the scattered rays production is influenced by the nature of the shielding materials and the energy of the radiation, therefore to choose the proper shielding material is the most important matter in radiation protection. Authors made an experimental study on the scattered rays generated from the shielding materials, and obtained the results as follows: 1. In the ranking of the scattered rays production: Cement bricks, black colored fire bricks, and red colored fire bricks were marked the first the second, and the third ranking respectly, and the last order was lead plates. 2. In the relative ranking of the scattered rays production by energy increase: Lead plates were marked the first order, the next and third order were red colored fire bricks and black colored fire bricks respectly, and cement bricks were marked the last order. 3. The scattered ray ratio of lateral-back point per lateral point were generally decreased by energy increment. The diminishing orders were that lead plates were the first order, and the next and the third order were red colored fire bricks and black colored fire bricks respectly, cement bricks were marked the last order.
Polycarbonates are widely used as housing materials of electronic handsets. Since the polycarbonate is electrically insulating, there should be a conducting layer on the polycarbonate for EMI shielding. In this study, we sputter deposited Cu films on the polycarbonate substrates for EMI shielding. Plasma treatments of polycarbonates were used to increase the adhesion strength of the Cu film/polycarbonate interface. The surface energy of the polycarbonate was greatly increased from $30mJ/m^2 \;to\; 65mJ/m^2$ by a 200 W $O_2$ plasma treatment for 10s. It is thought that this is because of the ion bombardment. The adhesion strength of the sputter deposited Cu film to the polycarbonate was quantitatively measured by a 4 point bending tester. A moderate plasma surface treatment of the polycarbonate increased the Cu film/polycarbonate adhesion strength by $30\%$. The EMI shielding efficiency of the sputter deposited $10{\mu}m$ Cu lam on the polycarbonate showed 90dB in the range of 100MHz to 1000MHz.
High energy ball milling is employed to produce iron matrix- multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced composite. The damage caused to MWCNT due to harsh ball milling condition and its influence on interfacial bonding is studied. Different amount of MWCNT is used to find the optimal percentage of MWCNT for avoidance of the formation of chemical reaction product at the matrix - reinforcement interface. Effect of process control agent is assessed by the use of different materials for the purpose. It is observed that ethanol as a process control agent (PCA) causes degradation of MWCNT reinforcements after milling for two hours whereas solid stearic acid used as process control agent, allows satisfactory conservation of MWCNT structure. It is further noted that at a high MWCNT content (~ 2wt.%), high energy ball milling leads to reaction of iron and carbon and forms iron carbide (cementite) at the iron-MWCNT interface. At low percentage of MWCNT, dissolution of carbon in iron takes place and the amount of reinforcement in iron matrix composite becomes negligibly small. However, under the present ball milling condition (ball to metal ratio~ 6:1 and 200 rpm vial speed) iron-1wt.% MWCNT composite of good interfacial bonding can retain the tubular structure of reinforcing MWCNT.
Tensile, low cycle fatigue, and fatigue crack growth rate tests were conducted at RT and $300^{\circ}C$ for type 304 stainless steel. Tensile was tested under displacement control and low cycle fatigue was tested under strain control. Fatigue crack growth rate test was conducted under load control and crack was measured by DCPD method. Yield strength and elongation decreased at $300^{\circ}C$. Dynamic strain aging was not detected at $300^{\circ}C$. Low cycle fatigue life increased but fatigue strength decreased at $300^{\circ}C$. Fatigue crack growth rate increased at $300^{\circ}C$. Dislocation structures were mixed with cell and planar and did not change with temperature. Grain size did not change but plastic strain increased at $300^{\circ}C$. Strain induced martensite after low cycle fatigue test increased at RT but decreased at $300^{\circ}C$. It was concluded that the increase of low cycle fatigue life at $300^{\circ}C$ was due to the decrease of strain induced martensite at which crack was initiated.
This work is concerned with a statistical approach to the life prediction on irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) of stainless steel (SS) for core internals of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The previous results of the time-to-failure of IASCC measured on neutron-irradiated stainless steel components were statistically analyzed in terms of stress and irradiation. The accelerating life testing model of IASCC of cold worked Type 316 SS was established based on an inverse power model with two stress-variables, the applied stress and irradiation dose. Considering the variation of the yield strength and applied stress with the irradiation dose in the model, the remaining life of the baffle former bolt was statistically predicted during operation under complex environments of stress and irradiation.
In order to understand why annealing at $480^{\circ}C$ for several hour prevents the initiation of PWSCC, the residual stress variation with isothermal annealing at $480^{\circ}C$ and isochronal annealing between 480 and $800^{\circ}C$ in cold rolled Alloy 600 was investigated by the XRD method. The isothermal annealing decreased residual stress slightly in the rolling direction but not in the transverse direction, whereas the isochronal annealing for two hours increased residual stress. It seemed that the decrease in residual stress by isothermal annealing was due to lattice contraction by an ordering reaction because the isothermal annealing increased hardness. The effects of the isochronal annealing could be interpreted as the influence of thermal expansion and a disordering reaction.
The effects of the ordering reaction on high temperature mechanical behavior is investigated by tensile tests at $2{\times}10^{-2}/s-3.3{\times}10^{-5}/s$ up to $745^{\circ}C$. The tensile deformed region is examined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), TEM, and high resolution neutron diffraction (HRPD). The results showed that a plateau of tensile strength appeared at $150-500^{\circ}C$ whereas the elongation minimum occurred at about $600^{\circ}C$. This suggests that the occurrence of a plateau does not cause the elongation minimum. The temperature of the elongation minimum decreases with the strain rate. HRPD results show a lattice contraction in the tensile deformed specimen at the temperature of the plateau occurring region. The plateau of tensile strength, the lattice contraction, and the occurrence of serration appeared in the same temperature region.
