We conducted this study to investigate anti-inflammatory possibilities of applying cosmetic material about extracts from red ginseng. For this we carried out biological active evaluation about anti-inflammatory by using extracts of red ginseng. In order to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of the samples in macrophages (RAW 264.7 cells), MTT assay was used to evaluate the toxicity of red ginseng extracts and the inhibitory activity of nitric oxide production and the expression levels of inflammation-related proteins and genes. The inhibitory activity of nitric oxide in the LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells was 71.2% at 25 ㎍/ml concentration and western blot analysis showed that the expression of iNOS and COX-2 protein decreased in a concentration-dependent manner. These results suggest that extracts from red ginseng may have value as the potential cosmetic materials.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate anti-aging and antioxidant effects of extracts of Nelumbo nucifera leaves (NN-L) using ethanol on skin .Methods : Each part of leaves(NN-L), flowers(NN-F) and stem(NN-S) was extracted with 70% ethanol. We performed radical scavenging assay(DPPH, ABTS+, Superoxide anion radical), elastase inhibition assay, collagenase inhibition assay. NN-L extracts were tested for cell viability(MTT assay), MMP-1 inhibition and MMP-1 protein expression on CCD-986sk cells (human fibroblast line). Results : Recently, many studies have reported that elastin is also involved in inhibiting or repairing wrinkle formation, although collagen is a major factor in the skin wrinkle formation. We measured its free radical scavenging activity, elastase inhibitory activity and expression of MMP-1 (matrix metalloprotease-1) in human fibroblast cells. Among the parts of Nelumbo nucifera, NN-L showed the highest antioxidant activities and in radical scavenging. DPPH, ABTS+ and Superoxide anion radical scavenging activity of NN-L at concentration of 1,000 μg/mL were 91.43%, 99.31% and 73.7% respectively. In vitro elastase and collagenase inhibition effects of NN-L at concentration of 1,000 μg/mL was 42.8% and 55.3% respectively. The ethanol extract of NN-L showed cell viability of 95.4% in 50 μg/mL concentration. In addition, The results from Western blot assay showed that NN-L decreased the expression of MMP-1 protein in a dose-dependent manner (by up to 35.0% at 50 μM).Conclusion : The findings suggest that the NN-L great potential as a cosmeceutical ingredient with antioxidant and anti-wrinkling effects.
Due to the unique sourness and sweet taste of Aronia, it is necessary to develop it for processing rather than raw. The antioxidant activity and cytotoxin about the aronia powder fermentation extract using lactobacillus are verified. In the case of total polyphenol content, the content of non-fermented extract was 32.15 ㎍/mg fermentation extract, 43.08 ㎍/mg after fermentation, and the flavonoid content was 0.47 ㎍/mg in non-fermented extract and 0.44 ㎍/mg in fermented extract, which was similar to that of non-fermented extract. In the DPPH radical inhibition assay, 77.5% of the non-fermented extract and 89.1% of the fermented extract showed better activity than the non-fermented extract. Nitric oxide (NO) measurement showed a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect. From the above results, it was confirmed that the fermentation of Aronia powder could be utilized based on some antioxidant activities and the possibility of using it as a vegetable extract and fermented cosmetic material in the future.

The purpose of this study was to confirm the possiblility of Zingiber mioga as a cosmetic material. For this we carried out biologically activated material characteristic evaluation about anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, wrinkle reduction effects using Zingiber mioga extract. To carry out this experiment, we extracted Zingiber mioga extract from Zingiber mioga flowers exract (ZMF) and Zingiber mioga leaves exract (ZML) with 70% ethanol. In order to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect, we tested the toxicity and the hindrance activity to nitric oxide of samples using macrophages (RAW 264.7 cells). After we measured DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS+ radical scavenging activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of the Zingiber mioga extracts, we knew that they increased depending on their concentration. ZMF showed higher antioxidant activity than ZML after the measurement of ABTS+ radial scavenging activity and superoxide desmutase (SOD)-like activity. According to the measurement result of Nitric oxide inhibition activity we knew that ZMF reduced NO productions in a concentration-dependent manner. After the measurement of the biosynthesis quantity of pro-collagen type-1, we knew that its excellent effect appeared 110% or more at the concentration of 25 ㎍/ml. And at the same concentration, the result of the measurement of metalloprotease (MMP)-1 inhibition effect showed the 20% activation. In conclusion, ZMF is expected to be applied as a cosmetic material for wrinkle reduction. Zingiber mioga is believed to be used as a natural cosmetic material because it has been proven to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wrinkle-improving effects.

Sorghum is a rich source in phytochemicals, such as tannins, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, phytosterols and policosanols. Sorghum has been known to have antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antioxidant properties. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)-sorghum extract(SE) composite nanoweb was produced by electrospinning and its characteristics including bioactivities were investigated. The SE had antimicrobial and antiinflammatory activities as well as a reduced cytotoxicity. The PVA-SE nanoweb had a highly enhanced antimicrobial activity compared to PVA nanoweb. The amount of proinflammatory cytokine released from macrophages treated with the PVA-SE nanoweb was reduced. The PVA-SE nanoweb can be a potential candidate for medical and cosmeceutical materials providing antimicrobial and antiinflammatory activities with a low degree of cytotoxicity.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) disrupt the cellular redox balance, exert cytotoxic effects, and consequently promote the development of various diseases in humans. Previous studies have reported that antioxidants counteract the adverse effects of ROS. Several studies examine the whitening effects of various agents based on their ability to inhibit tyrosinase activity. Tyrosinase is a critical enzyme involved in the synthesis of melanin, which protects the skin against radiation. Various agents exhibiting antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities have been synthesized. However, these synthetic drugs are associated with toxicity, decreased safety, and poor skin penetration in vivo, which has limited the clinical application of synthetic drugs. This study examined the antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of some microalgae. The methanol, dichloromethane, and ethyl acetate extracts of four microalgal species (Tetraselmis tetrathele, Dunaliella tertiolecta, Platymonas sp., and Chaetoceros simplex) were prepared. The physiological and whitening effects of microalgal extracts were investigated by measuring the antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities. The ethyl acetate extract of D. tertiolecta exhibited the highest antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities. Future studies must focus on examining the whitening effects of microalgae on cell lines to facilitate the development of microalga-based therapeutics for skin diseases, functional health foods, and whitening agents. Thus, microalgae have potential applications in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries.
The solvent extracts of Nelumbo nucifera G. were investigated for antioxidant activities, whitening and anti-wrinkle effects to apply as a functional ingredient in cosmetic products. For their industrial application, the cosmetic products were also prepared with advanced formulation techniques such as W/O/W multiple emulsion. Total phenolic and flavonoids contents increased in Nelumbo nucifera G.-Leaf (NN-L). The electron donating ability of Nelumbo nucifera G.-Flower (NN-F) or Nelumbo nucifera G.-Leaf (NN-L) extracts were above 85% at a concentration of 500 ppm. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of Nelumbo nucifera G. (NN-L) extracts was about 60% at a concentration of 1,000 ppm. The xanthine oxidase inhibitory effect of NN-L extract was higher than that of NN-F and NN-S extracts. The tyrosinase inhibitory effect, which is related to skin-whitening, was 36% in NN-F at 1,000 ppm. For anti-wrinkle effect, the elastase inhibition activity of NN-L was about 30% at 1,000 ppm. The results of stability test showed that W/O/W multiple emulsion (ME) containing Nelumbo nucifera G. extracts. The electron donating ability of the ME containing NN-F and NN-L were about 60% at a concentration of 100 ppm. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of the ME containing NN-L was 30% at 1,000 ppm. The tyrosinase inhibitory effect, which is related to skin-whitening, was 34% in the ME containing NN-F at 1,000 ppm. In anti-wrinkle effect, the elastase inhibition activity of the ME containing NN-L was about 55% at 1,000 ppm.
This study was carried out to analyze the nutritional composition, bioactive compound and antioxidant activity in fresh sprout of 3 new Kalopanax septemlobus cultivars. Cheong-San, Cheong-Song and Cheong Sun 1 had largest carbohydrate (52.90, 53.12, 55.28%), crude protein (34.23, 31.33, 33.58%) in the proximate composition and had largest K (2.29, 2.22, 2.23%) followed by Ca (0.44, 0.34, 0.37%), Mg (0.24, 0.19, 0.19%) in the mineral contents. Three new cultivars contained a total of 26, 25 and 28 different kinds of amino acids, respectively and the number of essential amino acid is 6, 6 and 7 species, respectively. Also, Cheong-San had higher total polyphenol contents and Cheong-Song had higher total flavonoid contents. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of 70% ethanol, water extracts of Cheong-San and Cheong-Song is higher than others at 100 ppm. In the ABTS radical cation decolorization activity, 70% ethanol extract of Cheong Sun 1, water extract of Cheong-San and Cheong-Song are higher activity than others and all samples have more than 85% ABTS racial cation decolorization activity at 500 ppm. Our results suggest that new K. septemlobus cultivars possess good antioxidant capacities with a high nutritional value and might have potential applications in the food and medical industries.
