  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide essential resources on various evaluation strategies by identifying relationships between professor-evaluation, peer-evaluation, and self-evaluation of the core basic nursing skills in nursing students. Methods: Forty third-year nursing students who participated in core basic nursing skills were given the same checklist that was used for assessment by the examiners. Then, the scores of the professor and the students were compared and analyzed with SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: The scores of the student peer (178.54) and student self-evaluation(177.74) was significantly higher than the scores of professor-evaluation (172.05),(F=5.03, p=.008). There was a significant, positive correlation between the professor-evaluation and the student-peer-evaluation in skill-scores(r=.47, p=.002) and attitude-scores(r=.52, p<.001). In addition, the professor-evaluation and the self-evaluation each showed a significant, positive correlation in skill-scores(r=.61, p<.001) and attitude-scores(r=.36, p=.023). Conclusion: The study result indicates that in order to expand the evaluation method, the professor evaluation, as well as the student self and the peer evaluation, will contribute to improve the educational achievement of learners.

  • This study is a similar experimental study before and after the inequality control group to investigate the effect of PETTLEP model-based image training on fundamental nursing practice education on the confidence and competence ability of core basic nursing skills, and participation in autonomous practice. Data were collected by randomly assigning 74 students who understood the purpose of the study and voluntarily agreed to participate in the study among second-year students of the Department of Nursing at U University located in K Province, randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group. For the collected data, frequency and percentage were used for general characteristics of subjects using SPSS Statistics 23.0 program, skewness and kurtosis were used for normality test, and the dependent variable test for measuring the effect of experimental treatment was analyzed by paired t-test. As a result of the study, PETTLEP model-based image training showed confidence in core basic nursing skills(t=4.18, p<.001) and competence (knowledge(t=2.241, p=.032), nursing skills(t=8.402, p<.001)), there were statistically significant differences in self-practice participation(t=6.822, p<.001). Based on the results of this study, the PETTLEP model-based image training provided Based on the results of this study, it was confirmed that PETTLEP model-based image training can be a teaching and learning method applicable to basic nursing education. In addition, PETTLEP model-based image training is expected to be utilized as a learning method to improve the competence of core basic nursing skills, which are recognized as difficult due to their high level of difficulty.

  • Basic nursing core skills are the essential skills required of nurses to effectively care for their patients. This study introduces an on-campus practicum using a mobile-based reflective journal, and attempts identify the challenges faced by students when performing core clinical nursing skills. The on-campus practicum was operated based on Kolb's experiential learning cycle. For each class, students used mobile devices to write an online reflective journal. Analyzing contents of the reflective log helped in identifying difficulties experienced in executing core skills, and classifying them in terms of knowledge, skill, and attitude. The level of difficulty, importance, and confidence in the core clinical nursing skills were also assessed. Students were found to be struggling with various aspects of performing core nursing skills, especially in the skill category. Students also showed a lack of confidence in items they perceived as "high" difficulty, such as IV injection and indwelling catheterization. Moreover, over 50% students considered IV injection and vital sign checking as the most important core clinical nursing skills. Our data suggests the necessity to develop various contents and apply instructional strategies to solve the core skills difficulties faced by nursing students, and to continuously generate evidence for the same.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of core basic nursing education using cellular phone video recordings on self-confidence in performance, achievement, and practice satisfaction. Methods: The research design was a nonequivalent control group modified and non-synchronized design. The participants were assigned to either the experimental (n=60) or control group (n=67). During one semester, the experimental group received training for 10 selected core basic nursing skills using cellular phone video recording. The control group, also for one semester, received training with traditional practices. Self-confidence in performance and practice satisfaction were measured using a questionnaire, and achievement was evaluated by professors at the conclusion of the semester. Collected data were analyzed using t-test and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: Self-confidence in performance increased significantly after training in the experimental group (t=7.94, p<.001). The experimental group showed significantly higher self-confidence in performance (t=2.39, p=.018) and achievement (t=2.40, p=.018) compared to the control group. However, the difference in practice satisfaction was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results indicate that cellular phone video recording is effective in improving self-confidence in performance and achievement of core basic nursing skills.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the core competencies of nursing students and to improve competency-based nursing education. Methods: A triangulation method was used. A literature review and focus group interviews (FGI) were used to identify nursing core competencies. The present level of nursing competencies of students was identified through the nursing core performance questionnaire. Results: 1) Nursing core competencies, including 23 different competencies, were categorized into seven areas through a literature review and qualitative research. These competencies included: desirable personality, attitude & interpersonal skills, professionalism, nursing knowledge & basic nursing skills, ability to cope with nursing situations, basic ability in nursing research, coping ability with changes in the healthcare environment, and leadership. 2) Core nursing skills, nursing research, and nursing leadership were the three lowest ranking competencies. Some courses in the curriculum were to be newly established in an e-learning system, student's portfolio in non-curriculum. Conclusions: Further research is needed in order to show effects of the changes. Changes after applying the strategy of a nursing education program will be measured. Continuous research in competency-based nursing education is needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self reflective practice using cellular phone video recordings on self-confidence in performance, practice satisfaction, learning self-efficacy and core basic nursing skills achievement. A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group posttest design was used. Participants were recruited from one nursing colleges. The sample consisted of an experimental group (n=43) that participated in the self reflective practice using cellular phone video recordings program and a control group (n=43). The data of self-confidence in performance, practice satisfaction, and learning self-efficacy were collected using self-administered questionnaires from March 2, 2018 to May 30. The core basic nursing skills achievement was evaluated by two researchers. Data analyzed using ${\chi}^2$-test and independent t-test. After the intervention, self-confidence in performance, learning self-efficacy and core basic nursing skills achievement significantly increased in the experimental group compared with the control group. Findings indicated that, this program can be recommended as an effective educational program for the nursing student to improve their fundamental nursing skills.
