Moderating Effect of Childcare Teachers' Role Conflict on the Relationship Between Professionalism Perception and Teacher Efficacy: Focused on Teachers Having Children

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the moderating effect of childcare teachers' role conflict on the relationship between their professionalism perception and teaching. The subjects were 365 childcare teachers who had children. They were asked to complete the survey on professionalism perception, role conflict in women, and teacher efficacy along with their background information. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 24.0 software. Descriptive, Pearson's correlation analyses, and a hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. As results, first, the childcare teachers with high professionalism perception showed high teacher efficacy, and the childcare teachers with high role conflict showed low teacher efficacy. Second, there was the moderating effect of role conflict on the relationship between professionalism perception and teacher efficacy.

A Study on the Development of Interaction Scale between Teachers and Children for Childcare Teachers (보육교사의 교사-유아 상호작용 평가 척도 개발 연구)

  • Interaction Scale between Teachers and Children for childcare teachers (ISTC) was constructed based on the research data completed by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family with a participation of childcare teachers and early childhood educators. The results of this study were; First, the study found that the 42 items of the ISTC were categorized into eight factors by 205 childcare teachers: a positive language and behaviors of teachers, encouragement of positive interactions among peers, offering a nap time, toilet use, emotional intervention, free play participation, an equal care of children, and meals and snack time. Second, these factors exhibited a high correlation interactively. Third, the ISTC showed a high correlation with teachers' performance scale.

Children's Understanding on the Roles of Male Childcare Teachers and Children's Gender Role Concepts (유아가 인식하는 남성보육교사의 역할과 유아의 성역할 개념)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze children's perspectives on the role of male childcare teachers and children' s gender role concepts. According to the results, when it comes to how the children perceive the roles of the male childcare teacher, the children mostly saw the male childcare teacher as a person who teaches and in another case, they regarded him as someone who takes care of their daily life and who is willing to play games with them. On the other hand, the male childcare teacher's organizing of an environment, supporting tasks and working on a computer were perceived less by the children. In terms of the gender role concepts, the study confirmed that depending on the role performance of the male childcare teacher, the children in the male childcare teacher's class had better understanding than those children in the female childcare teacher's class. In order to secure the children's right to participate specified in the convention of the rights of the child, the study applied not only the interviews with the children but also their drawings to the analysis, and that was what led the study to an in-depth discussion on the perception of the children.

The Relationship between Teachers' Efficacy Belief and Interactions of Teachers and Children (보육교사의 교사효능감과 교사-유아 상호작용과의 관계)

  • The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between teachers' efficacy belief and interactions between teachers and children of childcare teachers, and utilize the results as the basic data to educate of teachers. The subjects were 205 teachers at 48 childcare centers located in the Jeonlabukdo area. The results of this study are as follows: First, personal teaching efficacy and factors of interactions between teachers and children were significantly different by the types of childcare institution. Second, personal teaching efficacy was correlated positively with teachers' experiences. General teaching efficacy, personal teaching efficacy and factors of interactions between teachers and children were correlated positively with teachers' age. Third, factors of interactions between teachers and children were correlated positively with personal teaching efficacy. Lastly, personal teaching efficacy was the most powerful variable influencing interactions between teachers and children.

Study on Childcare Teachers' Changes of Disability Awareness and Childcare Experience through the Training for Disability Awareness (장애아 통합어린이집 일반교사의 장애인식 및 보육경험에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to investigate the changes of their recognition and childcare practices before and after the training for disability awareness targeting class teachers in inclusive childcare setting. Subjects of this study were 9 teachers and the data was collected from 3 focus group (3 persons per group) and personal interviews in case of study needs. The results of this study are as follows: childcare teachers appealed ignorance and fear of children with disabilities before learning to improve their disability awareness, and have learned from the non-prejudiced attitudes of non-disabled children. The need for understanding and knowledge of children with disabilities was high, and they voluntarily and actively participated in the education for the improvement of disability awareness. Since participating in education, teachers have shown changes in perceptions of children with disabilities and changes in the way they practice childcare for disabled children. As regards cognition, teachers have become more interested in and understanding of children with disabilities and have tried to treat them equally with non-disabled children. Regarding the practice of childcare, they practiced the integrated program together with the non-disabled child and the disabled child through cooperative partnership. They also provided the disability awareness education to the non-disabled children and provided the partial integrated childcare program flexibly in one class according to the situation. The results of this study were analyzed and discussed about the general childcare teachers' experience related to the education for improving disability recognition and caring at childcare setting.

A Case Study on Childcare Teachers' Facial Expression Language: Focused on the Opinions of Teachers, Directors, and Parents (보육교사의 표정언어에 관한 사례연구: 교사, 원장, 학부모의 견해를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the opinions of teachers, directors, and parents about childcare teachers' facial expression language. We performed in-depth interviews based on literature and previous studies, which consisted of ten childcare teachers, ten directors, and ten parents. From the in-depth interviews, we are able to mainly conclude that all groups think that a childcare teacher's facial expression language is very important, and strongly influences interpersonal problems and work performance. Mostly, childcare teachers aim to have pleasant facial expressions. However they complain that in some situations it is difficult to do so, which causes severe stress. They argued that the facial expressions of both the director of the childcare center and the parents are also very important for children. However, the directors thought that teachers' facial expressions affect children and their parents' impressions of the teachers and quality of childcare. The parents are usually highly satisfied with the childcare when the teacher has a pleasant facial expression, which motivates the parents to have a positive impression of the teacher. Taken together, childcare teachers' facial expression language is critical for children and the childcare environment. Thus, developing an education program for facial expression language would be helpful for improving the quality of child care. Plus, childcare environments should be developed so that teachers do not experience difficulty in having pleasant facial expressions. This result might have the limitation of being collected from only female childcare teachers, directors, and parents.

Experienced Childcare Teachers' Positionality in Their Metaphors (메타포 분석을 통해 본 고경력 보육교사의 위치성)

  • Objective: The research aimed to help understand the lives of those living in today's Korean society by analyzing the positionality of experienced childcare teachers, and to obtain relevant policy implications. Methods: The participants were 111 childcare teachers with more than seven years of job experience. The metaphors expressing themselves were collected and implemented the metaphor analysis in terms of positionality. Results: First, the participants who recognized themselves as experts were positioned as teachers who cared for and taught children, as co-learners with children, and as leaders of junior teachers. Second, the participants who recognized themselves as minorities were positioned as non-subjects, and as oppressed persons who had to obey in the lower levels of the organizational system of childcare centers. Third, the participants who recognized themselves as marginal persons were positioned as problem solvers, and as border-crossers who conflict and adjust in complex relationships. Conclusion/Implications: Based on the results, the following policy suggestions were made. First, policies must be expressed in public language that respect childcare teachers as a key worker in society; second, the job policies must be shifted toward employment security of childcare teachers. Third, substantial support for labor costs for childcare teachers should be expanded.

The Effects of Childcare Centers Accreditation on Teachers' Utilization of Activity Materials and Interaction with Children (보육시설 평가인증이 보육교사의 보육활동 자료활용 및 유아와의 상호작용에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, many childcare centers have actively participated in assessment accreditation. 115 teachers who did participate or did not participate in the accreditation process completed a structured questionnaire, We examined differences between teachers in accredited centers and in non-accredited centers in terms of their individual characteristics, work environment, the utilization of activity materials and the interaction with children. In addition, using the regression model, we analyzed the effects of several characteristics of teachers and childcare center's accreditation on the utilization of activity materials as well as the interactions between teachers and children. The main results of this study are as follows. First, overall, the level of work environment of non-accredited centers was lower than that of accredited centers. Second, compared with teachers in non-accredited centers, teachers in accredited centers used more and higher levels of activity materials, and demonstrated a higher level of interactions with children. Third, including accreditation, use of helpers had a significant effect on the interactions between teacher and children. Forth, not only the accreditation system, but also work hours, work experience, children's age and use of helpers had a significant effect on using materials in childcare activities. Conclusively, understanding the experience of teachers in accredited centers is important hi terms of facilitating the quality of activities and the interactions with children.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine young children's social experiences during COVID-19. In this study, social experiences are defined as children's social interactions and relationships, their educational experiences, and their daily life experiences in child care centers. Methods: Participants include nine child care teachers and fifteen young children. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with individual teachers, interviews with young children, and small group storytelling activities with young children. Results: The main findings in exploring meanings and implications of childcare consulting were as follows. First, childcare consulting was recognized as a process of learning about changes through mutual relationships. Second, the different ways to practice childcare consulting, the formation of the learning culture of an organization to help experience collective intelligence, the process of finding various solutions through mutual communication, and the improvement of childcare teachers' professional capabilities while reflecting the current times and context were all investigated. Conclusion/Implications: Given the findings of the study, the importance of childcare consulting, and the ways to establish its systems were discussed.

A Study of Young Children's Adjustment to Childcare Centers : Focusing on the Individual Variables, Peer Competence, and Child-teacher Relationship (영유아의 어린이집 적응에 관한 연구: 개인변인, 또래유능성 및 교사관계를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine which variables of interest predicted young children's adjustment to childcare centers. The variables of interest in the study include children's individual variables(gender, age, and temperament), peer competence, and relationship with teachers. The subjects were 130 preschoolers aged 2 to 3 and their mothers and teachers. SPSS 15.0 program was used to analyze the data of the study. The results showed the statistically significant differences in children's adjustment to childcare centers by gender. Also, statistically significant relationships were found between children's adjustment to childcare centers and their temperament, peer competence, and relationship with teachers. Finally, the results of regression analyses revealed that children's conflicts with teachers, closeness to teachers, and leadership in peer competence were found to be the influential predictor of children's adjustment to childcare centers. Implications for research and practice were discussed in the light of the study results.
