  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine how Korea's macroeconomic factors, such as GDP, CPI, Export, Import, Unemployment rate and USD/KRW exchange rate, are affected by the oil price shocks. Design/methodology/approach - This study used monthly and quarterly time-series data of each variable for the period 1983 to 2022, consisting of two sub-periods, to employ Granger causality test and GARCH method in order to identify the role of the oil price movement in macroeconomic factors in Korea. Findings - Korea's currency rate to the US dollar is negatively correlated with the price change of crude oil while the GDP change is positively correlated with the price change of crude oil with strong relationship between Export and Import in particular. The exchange rate and GDP growth are believed to be not correlated with the oil price change for the pre-GFC period. According to the Granger causality test, the price change in crude oil has a causal impact on CPI, Export and Import while other factors are relatively slightly affected. Transmission effect from the oil price to Export is found and there also exists volatility spillover from oil price to economic variables under examination. Comparing two sub-periods, CPI and Export volatility responds negatively to shocks in the oil price for the pre-GFC period while volatility of CPI and Unemployment reacts positively to the oil price shocks for the post-GFC period. Research implications or Originality - The findings of this study could be helpful for both domestic and international investors to build their portfolio for the risk management since rising WTI price can be interpreted as a result of global economic growth and ensuing increase in the worldwide demand of the crude oil. Consequently, the national output is expected to increase and the currency is also expected to be strong in the long run.

  • A phase-change material is a substance with a high heat of fusion which, melting and freezing at a certain temperature, is capable of storing and releasing large amounts of energy. Heat is absorbed or released when the material changes from solid to liquid. Therefore, PCMs are classified as latent heat storage (LHS) units. The purpose of this study is to analyze PCM wallboard design parameters using dynamic energy simulation. Among the factors of PCM, melting temperature, latent heat, phase change range, thermal conductivity are very important element to maximize thermal energy storage. In order to analyze these factors, EnergyPlus which is building energy simulation provided by department of energy from the U.S is used. heat balance algorithm of energy simulation is conduction finite difference and enthalpy-temperature function is used for analyzing latent heat of PCM. The results show that in the case of melting temperature, the thermal energy storage could be improved when the melting temperature is equal to indoor surface temperature. It seems that when the phase change range is wide, PCM can store heat at a wide temperature, but the performance of heat storage is languished.

  • This research was intended to delve into the diversity of life phenomenon and its characteristics. First of all, this research gave real examples to compare the differences in men's health, disease, and longevity in order to confirm the existence of diversity of life phenomenon. In addition, it also studied the process and mechanism of manifestation of life phenomenon, as well as the influence and problems of existing studies' results and implications. The results are as follow. 1. Differences in health, diseases, and longevity were very big and diverse in researches on different races, nations, ages, socioeconomic status, positions, and even (monozygotic) twins. 2. The basic foundation of all organisms is DNA, and environmental factors change DNA methylation and the structure of chromatin by constantly influencing DNA. Due to this, the manifestation, control, and phenotype of DNA change, resulting in diversified life phenomenon. Therefore, it is the environmental factors, not DNA, that has more influence on the diversity of life. 3. Looking at available studies, the most reasonable perspective on human requires focusing on the diversity of life phenomenon, holistic thinking, and reversible change instead of irreversible determinism. Considerable differences in life phenomenon between entities require a change in malformed perspective on life. Public health and medicine deals with live human beings, a more precise and accurate perspective on life is very important. Because management methods of health and disease, such as structure and approaches of medical research, prevention and cure, must be different by life perspectives.

  • This study aims to perform the economic analysis to the use of solar power facilities in rural villages considering the climate change scenario. IPCC climate change scenarios in the recently adopted the RCP scenarios (RCP8.5, RCP6.5, RCP4.5, RCP2.6) was used. By RCP scenarios, solar radiation, depending on the scenario in 2100, respectively, 3.6%, 2.5%, 1.9%, 1.1% was assumed to increase. From the economic analysis(payback period is 25 year) on 8 points of each province, in all cases of normal data and four RCP scenarios, at all points analyzed were NPV indicate a negative, BC ratio less than 1.0, respectively. In the case of Mokpo, Chunnam RCP8.5, BC ratio were found to be up to a 0.92, followed by 0.89 in the case of RCP8.5 in Jinju, Kyungnam shows, while the minimum was in Jeju. BC ratio is 1.0 or bigger, in order for the normal solar radiation data in Mokpo, Chonnam was the minimum that it takes 37 years. Similarly, in the case of RCP scenarios, 30 years in Mokpo, Chonnam RCP8.5 and 31 years in the cases of Jinju, Kyungnam and Jeonju, Cheonbuk RCP8.5 were analyzed. It was analyzed that RCP8.5 has the highest value. BC analysis models for each of the factors, the results of the sensitivity analysis, the initial installation costs, electricity sales price, discount rate in the order of economy showed higher sensitivity, and the rest factors showed lower changes. Although there are some differences of solar radiation by region, but in Korea most facilities in rural areas, the use of solar power was considered to be economical enough, considering change of several factors with high sensitivity, such as increasing of government subsidies for the solar power installation of the facility, rising oil prices due to a rise in electricity sales price, and a change in discount rate. In particular, when considering climate change scenarios, the use of solar energy for rural areas of the judgment that there was more economical.

  • This paper conducts a Structural Dcomposition Analysis on the structure of factors contributing to the output growth of Korean Maritime and Port Industry during year 2000~ year 2017. Some of results are as follows. The output growth rates of the industry (yearly average 4.3%) was far lower than the average growth rates of Service as well as of Manufacturing Industries (yearly average 9% and 6.8%, respectively) due to the lower output growth of Maritime Industry. Among the growth contributing factors, change in domestic demand for final goods is the first contributing factor, and then change in technology, change in export and import substitution for intermediate goods are followed in order, but import substitution for final goods decreased its output. However, in each respective sub-periods of pre-global financial crisis and post-global financial crisis, change in the export, especially change in the export of Maritime Industry is the dominant determinant of output change in the Maritime and Port Industry in opposite ways. In the periods of the former the increase in the export of Maritime Industry overwhelmingly led the output growth of the Maritime and Port industry, but in the periods of the latter the decrease in its export was the culprit of lower output growth of the industry. On the other hand, among all industries of service and manufacturing sectors, Wholesale and Retail industry is the leading industry in contributing to the output growth of the Maritime and Port Industry, and Transportation Equipment industry is the leading industry among all manufacturing industries.
