With the increasing interest of energy efficiency, several buildings and factories begin to monitor energy usages with a built-in energy management system. However, the built-in energy monitoring system does not reflect the dynamics of buildings and factories energy usage. To overcome the latter, we deploy several sensors to monitor the dynamics of buildings energy usage patterns. In this paper, we are proposing a framework of a sensor based energy monitoring system. Based on our limited experiments, we can monitor power usages by a person, device and time period. As a result, we can plan a better energy usage and improve energy efficiency by the monitored energy usage profile data.
The researcher set up multiple sensor units on the road slope such as national highway and highway where there is a possibility of loss, and using the acceleration sensor built into the sensor unit the researcher will sense whether the inclination of the road slope occur in real time, and Based on the sensed data, the researcher tries to implement a system that detects collapse of road slope and dangerous situation. In the experiment of measuring the error between the actual measurement time and the judgment time of the monitoring system when judging the warning of the sensor and falling rock detection by using the acceleration sensor, the error between measurement time and the judgment time at the sensor warning was 0.34 seconds on average, and an error between measurement time and judgment time at falling rock detection was 0.21 seconds on average. The error is relatively small, the accuracy is high, and thus the change of the slope can be clearly judged.
Temperature monitoring techniques per depth have been recognized as important information in the reservoir environmental issues. However, old measurement method by single temperature sensor and cable type has demerits not only for its limited measuring location but for its inconvenience of users. In this study, multi-channel temperature monitoring system was introduced and executed experiment for actual application feasibility evaluation. Both type of new techniques such as multi-channel addressable built-in temperature sensor and fiber optic multi sensor were tested in Daechung and Imha reservoir. As a result, it was proved that these kinds of temperature monitoring skills had very good performance and availability for a output of spatial, simultaneous thermal distribution focused on the user's convenience. And these measuring method and thermal data will be useful for providing basic information in a water resources investigation like reservoir stratification and environmental problems.
In this paper, we describe a sensor module that monitors fire environment by analyzing fire characteristics. We analyzed the smoke characteristics of indoor fire. Six different environments were defined according to the type of smoke and the flame, and the sensors available for each environment were combined. Based on this analysis, the sensors were selected from the perspective of firefighter. The sensor module consists of an RGB camera, an infrared camera and a radar. It is designed with minimum weight to fit on the robot. the enclosure of sensor is designed to protect against the radiant heat of the fire scene. We propose a single camera mode, thermal stereo mode, data fusion mode, and radar mode that can be used depending on the fire scene. Thermal stereo was effectively refined using an image segmentation algorithm, SLIC (Simple Linear Iterative Clustering). In order to reproduce the fire scene, three fire test environments were built and each sensor was verified.
A lever type $NO_2$ micro gas sensor was fabricated by MEMS technology. In order to heat up the gas sensing material to a target temperature, a micro heater was built on the gas sensor. The sensing material laid on the heater and electrodes and did not contact with the silicon base to minimize the heat loss to the silicon base. The electric power to heat up the gas sensor to a target temperature was measured. The temperature distribution of micro gas sensor was analyzed by a CFD program. The predicted electric power of micro heater to heat up the sensing material to the target temperature showed a good agreement with the measured data. The design of micro gas sensor could be modified to show more uniform temperature distribution and to consume less electric power by optimizing the layout of micro heater and electrodes.
A micro hotplate for micro gas sensor was fabricated by MEMS technology. In order to heat up the gas sensing material to a target temperature, a micro hotplate was built on the gas sensor. The sensing material was deposited on the heater and electrodes, and did not contact with the silicon base to minimize the heat loss to the silicon base. The electric power to heat up the gas sensor was measured. The temperature distribution of micro gas sensor was analyzed by a CFD program. The predicted electric power to heat up th sensing material showed a good agreement with the measured data. The design of micro gas sensor could be modified to increase the temperature uniformity and to decrease the electric power consumption by optimizing the layout of micro hotplate and electrodes.
Wireless sensors are more favorable in measuring structural response compared to conventional sensors in terms of them being easier to use with no issues with cables and them being considerably cheaper. Previous tests have been conducted to analyze the performance of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) sensor in sinusoidal excitation tests. This paper analyzes the performance of in-built MEMS sensors in devices by comparing with an ICP sensor as the reference. Earthquake input amplitude excitation in shaking table tests was done. Results show that MEMS sensors are more accurate in measuring higher input amplitude measurements which range from 100gal to 250gal than at lower input amplitudes which range from 10gal to 50gal. This confirms the results obtained in previous sinusoidal tests. It was also seen that natural frequency results have lower error values which range from 0% to 3.92% in comparison to the response spectra results. This also confirms that in-built MEMS sensors in mobile devices are good at estimating natural frequency of structures. In addition, it was also seen that earthquake input amplitudes with more frequency contents (Gyeongju) had considerably higher error values than Pohang excitation tests which has less frequency contents.
Most portable mobile devices employ rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. This lithium-ion battery usually suffers from the possibility of explosion due to heat generation from surrounding atmosphere or internal deficiency during charging or at overuse. To solve these problems, most rechargeable batteries have a built-in protection circuit module (PCM). The resistance of a properly processed $VO_2$ critical temperature sensor (CTS) is changed dramatically at a critical temperature of around $68^{\circ}C$, which can replace some bi-metal, NTC, or PTC sensors embedded in PCM. Such $VO_2$ CTS consumes a very small current at the level of natural discharge. Experimental results showed that this CTS could be applied to a PCM as the PCM could protect the battery while keeping its power consumption at minimum.
