Synthesis and Characterization of the Surface Modified SBA-15 with Dicobaltcarbonyl Complex

  • Cobalt-immobilized SBA-15 6a-c was synthesized from alkyne-attached SBA 5a-c by the reaction with $Co_2(CO)_8$ in toluene. Alkyne group was introduced into amino SBA-15 (4) by imine-linkage or substitution with propargyl bromide to afford iminoalkyne 5a and aminoalkyne 5b, respectively. Meanwhile, alkyne 5c was prepared in one-step by reacting triethoxysilyl hexyne with SBA-15. Dicobalt-complexes 6a-c were characterized by means of FT-IR, solid-state NMR and elemental analysis.

  • The computational discovery of transcription factor binding site is one of the important tools in the genetic and genomic analysis. Rough prediction of gene regulation network and finding possible co-regulated genes are typical applications of the technique. Countless motif-discovery algorithms have been proposed for the past years. However, there is no dominant algorithm yet. Each algorithm does not give enough accuracy without extensive information. In this paper, we explore the possibility of combining multiple algorithms for the one integrated result in order to improve the performance and the convenience of researchers. Moreover, we apply new high order information that is reorganized from the set of basis predictions to the final prediction.

The Detection of Esophagitis by Using Back Propagation Network Algorithm

  • The results of this study suggest the use of a Back Propagation Network (BPN) algorithm for the detection of esophageal erosions or abnormalities - which are the important signs of esophagitis - in the analysis of the color and textural aspects of clinical images obtained by endoscopy. The authors have investigated the optimization of the learning condition by the number of neurons in the hidden layer within the structure of the neural network. By optimizing learning parameters, we learned and have validated esophageal erosion images and/or ulcers functioning as the critical diagnostic criteria for esophagitis and associated abnormalities. Validation was established by using twenty clinical images. The success rates for detection of esophagitis during calibration and during validation were 97.91% and 96.83%, respectively.

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are continuously produced at a high rate as a by-product obtained in the aerobic metabolism. A major portion of living organisms has defense system as superoxide dismutase or catalase against damage produced by ROS. Several lines of evidence provided that ROS appears to cause to develop aging and various diseases. Spatholobus suberectus Dunn has been known as a Korean folk medicine for promoting blood circulation and relieving blood stasis as anemia. In this study, we have investigated the antioxidant activities of Spatholobus suberectus Dunn in order to find the antioxidant substances from natural products. For various antioxidant experiment, the major antioxidant component was isolated from EtOAc extract of Spatholobus suberectus Dunn. This compound was identified as (-)-epicatechin by chemical and physical analysis.

Prebiotic Effects of Poly-Gamma-Glutamate on Bacterial Flora in Murine Gut

  • Prebiotics improve the growth or activities of specific microbial genera and species in the gut microbiota in order to confer health benefits to the host. In this study, we investigated the effect of poly-gamma-glutamate (${\gamma}-PGA$) as a prebiotic on the gut microbiota of mice and the organ distributions of ${\gamma}-PGA$ in mice. Pyrosequencing analysis for 16S rRNA genes of bacteria indicated that oral administration of ${\gamma}-PGA$ increased the abundance of Lactobacillales while reducing the abundance of Clostridiales in murine guts. It is suggested that oral administration of ${\gamma}-PGA$ can be helpful for modulating the gut microbiota as a prebiotic.

  • Size-controlled Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared from the decomposition of Ag(I) carboxylates using ethanolamine derivatives as a reducing agent without an additional stabilizing agent. The size of the Ag NPs with a narrow size distribution (sub-10 nm to ca. 40 nm) was controlled precisely by varying the processing parameters, such as the type of reducing agent and the chain length of the carboxylate in the Ag(I) carboxylate. The optical properties, surface composition and crystallinity of the Ag NPs were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, thermal gravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.

Preparation of Carrageenan-based Antimicrobial Films Incorporated With Sulfur Nanoparticles

  • Carrageenan-based functional films were prepared by adding two different types of sulfur nanoparticles (SNP) synthesized from sodium thiosulfate (SNPSTS) and elemental sulfur (SNPES). The films were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Also, film properties such as UV-visible light transmittance, water contact angle (WCA), water vapor permeability (WVP), mechanical properties, and antibacterial activity were evaluated. SNPs were uniformly dispersed in the carrageenan matrix to form flexible films. The addition of SNP significantly increased the film properties such as water vapor barrier and surface hydrophobicity but did not affect the mechanical properties. The carrageenan/SNP composite film showed some antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogenic bacteria, L. monocytogenes and E. coli.

Isolation and characterization of unrecorded yeast species from Korea in the families Debaryomycetaceae and Piskurozymaceae

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil of Gyeongju city, and Haemadipsa rjukjuana of Gageodo Island, characterizing unrecorded yeast strains from Korea. The molecular analysis of the D1/D2 domain of 26S rDNA of yeast was performed using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). No official report exists describing these three species: one species in the genus Candida, one species in the genus Debaryomyces, and one species in the genus Solicoccozyma. Candida saitoana YL9, Debaryomyces fabryi YL1, and Solicoccozyma terrea 20g9-1 are recorded for the first time from Korea. All three strains were oval shaped and polar binding, while positive for glucose, ᴅ-xylose, and ᴅ-cellobiose. Morphological, physiological, and biochemical properties are described in the species descriptions.

  • With the development of genomics, wearable device and IT/NT, a vast amount of bio-medical data are generated recently. Also, healthcare industries based on big-data are booming and big-data technology based on bio-medical data is rising rapidly as a core technology for improving the national health and aged society. A pathway is the biological deep knowledge that represents the relations of dynamics and interaction among proteins, genes and cells by a network. A pathway is wildly being used as an important part of a bio-medical big-data analysis. However, a pathway analysis requires a lot of time and effort because a pathway is very diverse and high volume. Also, multidimensional analysis systems for various pathways are nonexistent even now. In this paper, we proposed a pathway analysis system that collects user interest pathways from KEGG pathway database that supports the most widely used pathways, constructs a network based on a hierarchy structure of pathways and analyzes the relations of dynamics and interaction among pathways by clustering and selecting core pathways from the network. Finally, to verify the superiority of our pathway analysis system, we evaluate the performance of our system in various experiments.

Identification and Characterization of Hydrogen Peroxide-generating Lactobacillus fermentum CS12-1

  • Lactic acid bacteria were isolated from silage, which produce high level of hydrogen peroxide in cell culture supernatant. The 16S rDNA sequences of the isolate matched perfectly with that of Lactobacillus fermentum (99.9%), examined by a 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis and similarity search using the GenBank database, thus named L. fermentum CS12-1. L. fermentum CS12-1 showed resistance to low pH and bile acid. The production of hydrogen peroxide by L. fermentum CS12-1 was confirmed by catalase treatment and high-performance liquid chromatography. L. fermentum CS12-1 accumulated hydrogen peroxide in culture broth as cells grew, and the highest concentration of hydrogen peroxide reached 3.5 mM at the late stationary growth phase. The cell-free supernatant of L. fermentum CS12-1 both before and after neutralization inhibited the growth of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 that causes diarrhea in piglets.
