Identifying the stability of rotor systems is prerequisite for clear determination of the parameter identification and safety, through which operating conditions may be rationally ascertained. For this purpose, the complex modal analysis of periodically time-varying system has been introduced by transforming the relation between periodic eigen-vectors and the corresponding adjoint vectors into the latent value problem. Stability investigation associated with modal features for rotor systems is performed using numerical simulation based upon the analysis model.

We derive a sampling theorem associated with first order self-adjoint eigenvalue problem with a finite rank perturbation. The class of the sampled integral transforms is of finite Fourier type where the kernel has an additional perturbation.
We construct a symmetric finite volume element (SFVE) scheme for a self-adjoint elliptic problem on tetrahedron grids and prove that our new scheme has optimal convergent order for the solution and has superconvergent order for the flux when grids are quasi-uniform and regular. The symmetry of our scheme is helpful to solve efficiently the corresponding discrete system. Numerical experiments are carried out to confirm the theoretical results.
In this study, a topological design sensitivity of the ai. bearing surface (ABS) is suggested by using an adjoint variable method. The discrete form of the generalized lubrication equation based on a control volume formulation is used as a compatible condition. A residual function of the slider is considered as an equality constraint function, which represents the slider in equilibrium. The slider thickness parameters at all grid cells are chosen as design variables since they are the topological parameters determining the ABS shape. Then, a complicated adjoint variable equation is formulated to directly handle the highly nonlinear and asymmetric coefficient matrix and vector in the discrete system equation of air-lubricated slider bearings. An alternating direction implicit (ADI) scheme is utilized for the numerical calculation. This is an efficient iterative solver to solve large-scale problem in special band storage. Then, a computer program is developed and applied to a slider model of a sophisticated shape. The simulation results of design sensitivity analysis (DSA) are directly compared with those of FDM at the randomly selected grid cells to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The overall distribution of DSA results are reported, clearly showing the region on the ABS where special attention should be given during the manufacturing process.

A method for shape design sensitivity analysis is proposed utilizing commercial software ANSYS for thermal conduction problems. While the sensitivity formula is derived analytically by introduing adjoint variable concept, sensitivity calculation in practice as well as the primal and adjoint solution of thermal conduction is performed using the ANSYS very easily. Since the formula always takes boundary integral form, sensitivity evaluation in ANSYS requires a little more addition of post-processing routine which involves evaluation of boundary variable from the obtained solution. Though the BEM has been used as a better tool for this purpose, the present study shows it can also be calculated using any kind of analysis code such as ANSYS since the formula is based on analytic nature. Therefore the present study provides a new and efficient way of optimization which was not possible before using commercial software. The usefulness of the method is illustrated via a weight minimization problem of thermal diffuser.

It is main objective of this approach to present a method to analyse stochastic design sensitivity for problems of structural dynamics with randomness in design parameters. A combination of the adjoint variable approach and the second oder perturbation method is used in the finite element approach. An alternative form of the constant functional that holds for all times is introduced to consider the time response of dynamic sensitivity. The terminal problem of the adjoint system is solved using equivalent homogeneous equations excited by initial velocities. The numerical procedures are shown to be much more efficient when based on the fold superposition method : the generalized co-ordinates are normalized and the correlated random variables are transformed to uncorrelated variables, where as the secularities are eliminated by the fast Fourier transform of complex valued sequences. Numerical algorithms have been worked out and proved to be accurate and efficient : they codes whose element derivative matrices can be explicitly generated. The numerical results of two cases - 2-dimensional portal frame and 3/4-cylindrical shell structure - for the deterministic and stochastic sensitivity analysis illustrates in this paper.
We consider a model of HIV infection with various compartments, including target cells, infected cells, viral loads and immune effector cells, to describe HIV type 1 infection. We show that the proposed model has one uninfected steady state and several infected steady states and investigate their local stability by using a Jacobian matrix method. We obtain equations for adjoint variables and characterize an optimal control by applying Pontryagin's Maximum Principle in a linear control problem. In addition, we apply techniques and ideas from linear optimal control theory in conjunction with a direct search approach to derive on-off HIV therapy strategies. The results of numerical simulations indicate that hybrid on-off therapy protocols can move the model system to a "healthy" steady state in which the immune response is dominant in controlling HIV after the discontinuation of the therapy.
In this paper, we present an optimal shape design method for a dielectric microlens which is used to focus an incoming infrared plane wave in wideband, by exploiting the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique and the topology optimization technique. Topology optimization is a scheme to search an optimal shape by adjusting the material properties, which are design variables, within the design space. And by introducing the adjoint variable method, we can effectively calculate a derivative of the objective function with respect to the design variable. To verify the proposed method, a shape design problem of a dielectric microlens is tested when illuminated by a transverse electric (TE)-polarized infrared plane wave. In this problem, the design variable is the dielectric constant within the design space of a dielectric microlens. The design objective is to maximally focus the incoming magnetic field at a specific point in wideband.

A continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method fur non-shape problems is developed for geometrically nonlinear elastic structures. The non-shape problem is characterized by the design variables that are not associated with the domain of system like sizing, material property, loading, and so on. Total Lagrangian formulation with the Green-Lagrange strain and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress is employed to describe the geometrically nonlinear structures. The spatial domain is discretized using the 4-node isoparametric plane stress/strain elements. The resulting nonlinear system is solved using the Newton-Raphson iterative method. To take advantage of the derived analytical sensitivity In topology optimization, a fast and efficient design sensitivity analysis method, adjoint variable method, is employed and the material property of each element is selected as non-shape design variable. Combining the design sensitivity analysis method and a gradient-based design optimization algorithm, an automated design optimization method is developed. The comparison of the analytical sensitivity with the finite difference results shows excellent agreement. Also application to the topology design optimization problem suggests a very good insight for the layout design.

A direct treatment of the min-max type objective function of the dynamic response optimization problem is proposed. Previously, the min-max type objective function was transformed to an artificial design variable and an additional point-wise state variable constraint function was imposed, which increased the complexity of the optimization problem. Especially, the design sensitivity analysis for the augmented Lagrangian functional with the suggested treatment is established by using the adjoint variable method and a computer program to implement the proposed algorithm is developed. The optimization result of the proposed treatment are obtained for three typical problems and compared with those of the previous treatment. It is concluded that the suggested treatment in much more efficient in the computational effort than the previous treatment with giving the similar optimal solutions.
